nixme··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (September 2020)
Qualified | Software Engineers (Full-time) | San Francisco OR Remote (US/Canada) | https://www.qualified.com

We believe corporate websites should be more than just digital brochures. Sales teams should be able to engage with prospective customers without the "Request a Demo" or "Contact Us" back and forth. Our tech facilitate conversations – think Zoom-like meetings – on your website, right when a prospect is most interested in learning more about your products or services.

We're looking for engineers who enjoy working closely with customer-facing teams, care about end-user experience and ownership of their work, yet recognize delivering great product is about collaborative engineering not just the individual developer.

Tech: React, Ruby, PostgreSQL. Early-stage with ecstatic customers. Funded by Salesforce, Redpoint, Norwest (Series A).

Founders have previously built successful enterprise-focussed products (e.g. GetFeedback, acquired by SurveyMonkey)

Reminds me about the woman who can smell Parkinson's:

> She sniffed six sweaty tees from people diagnosed with Parkinson’s, and six from healthy controls. Milne correctly identified which six had Parkinson’s, but she also tagged one of the control subjects as having the disease.

> Despite that error, Barran was intrigued—all the more so eight months later, when the same supposedly healthy control subject Milne had identified was diagnosed with Parkinson’s.

nixme··on A Better Way to Track JavaScript Errors
Sentry: https://getsentry.com/welcome/

It is good.

Easy to deploy internally. Python server, client libs for basically everything, plugins to chat apps, issue trackers, you name it: https://github.com/getsentry/sentry

The JS reporting supports source maps too.

nixme··on Rails 4 Engines
Heroku definitely does. Even inside a single dyno.

Switch to at least 2x-sized dynos and use nginx-buildpack (https://github.com/ryandotsmith/nginx-buildpack) with multi-buildpack (https://github.com/ddollar/heroku-buildpack-multi).

You'll probably need to modify/fork the ruby buildpack to do asset compiles twice (if necessary) and check-in both apps into the same repo. And of course modify the nginx configuration.

nixme··on Satoshi Nakamoto is probably Nick Szabo?
Did you even read the article? That statement is prefaced by "According to what seems to be a widely accepted origin story of Bitcoin, ...", meaning that's what many people assume.

Then right after, his thesis is to contrast that: "I would argue that Satoshi is actually Nick Szabo himself, probably together with one or more technical collaborators"

nixme··on AngularJS from an Ember.js perspective
Almost.... and Ember can mostly work with that last time I checked.

The missing piece is delegation though, i.e. you can't define a catch-all getter/setter and many Ember.*Proxy classes/mixins (e.g. http://emberjs.com/api/classes/Ember.ObjectProxy.html) rely on that. Like most Ember Controllers are delegating data state to a model, and are supplementing app state/behaviors on top.

ES6 Object Proxies fixes that.

But I'm liking how fast the Ember team has been including ES6 transpilers into directly in to Ember App Kit. So we may be writing more regular JSy looking property dot notation, like Angular, soon enough. And get all the benefits of UAP.

(By the way, for coffeescript fans, ember-script sort of does this for you: http://emberscript.com/)

nixme··on So you're thinking of tracking your JS errors
So somehow I've never noticed this as a problem. We get full stack traces for everything. On the other hand we use the hosted version of Sentry (https://getsentry.com), but since everything is open source, we bundle their raven library (https://github.com/getsentry/raven-js) into our CDN served package. So window.onerror is set from the same JS as the rest of the app. I'm guessing that avoids the cross-domain issue?
nixme··on Puma, a fast concurrent web server for Ruby
Have you tried running 3 or even 4 puma workers (each with 8-16) threads on a dyno? That way you can get more concurrency on CPU-bound requests in addition to IO-bound concurrency (assuming MRI).
