Long time Linux/Unix/FreeBSD/OpenBSD user, a seasoned sysadmin, blogger and a trainer for the Linux operating system/Unix shell scripting. Contact me via my blog:
In the old days, Unix rescue boot floppy disk to fix workstations or servers only included minimal text editors such as ed (i think vi was added later). So if you were a Unix admin or power user, you need to know ed to fix the dam system. The 'ed' text editor was available everywhere. These days rescue disks boot from USB or CD/DVD-ROM and may have a full desktops or operating systems running. A little bit of history, I guess. BTW, I prefer https://www.system-rescue.org/ these days to fix Linux bare metals.
Firefox is a Good browser, yet they have lost millions of users per their own data https://data.firefox.com/dashboard/user-activity So why are users switching to Chrome and clones? Is this because when you visit Google and MS properties from FF, they promote their browsers heavily? Once, Firefox was downloaded by every Windows user, and it wasn't just for Linux and co. To keep the future of open web open, Firefox must continue to exist. You may not like it, but that is the hard truth. Otherwise, Google will set all standards, which is not suitable for the open web. What do you think?
> In November 2022, TAG discovered exploit chains with 0-days affecting Android and iOS that were delivered via bit.ly links sent over SMS to users located in Italy, Malaysia and Kazakhstan. When clicked, the links redirected visitors to pages hosting exploits for either Android or iOS then redirected them to legitimate websites such as the page to track shipments for Italian-based shipment and logistics company BRT or a popular Malaysian news website.
You can harden your iPhone/iOS from a cyberattack with Lockdown Mode[0]. It blocks those clickable links and removes many other attack vectors https://support.apple.com/en-gb/guide/iphone/iph049680987/io... However, I'm unsure if an attacker could bypass Lockdown Mode with additional bugs on iOS.
Are you on GNU/Bash version 5.1[0]? A new bash variable, SRANDOM added to GNU/Bash-5.1 release, which gets its random data from the system’s entropy engine and is not lined and cannot be reseeded to get an identical random sequence. For example:
echo "$SRANDOM"
for r in {1..5}; do printf "%s\n" "$SRANDOM"; done
I have been writing a blog since 2000 and have made many friends all around the world. I still get comments and emails about topics I post on nixCraft[0]. But, most important, I learned a lot from those comments and emails. It also helped me build social media following[1][2] just for lulz. I recommend writing a blog with your own domain and server that you control.
Yes and No. Both modern Linux and OpenBSD have their pros and cons. For example, security works better in the onion layers, which can increase complexity. With Linux, you get a modern stack such as Linux containers or ZFS if you want those excellent filesystem features. Are you using containers for development and deploying apps? Using Linux would simplify the process (of course, you can set Linux VM under OpenBSD and run Docker).
On the other hand, OpenBSD is a compact OS. Less code == fewer bugs (at least in theory). Some of their code, such as OpenSSH, is wildly used by Linux, Windows, and major IT vendors in their devices. OpenBSD devs do write reliable code. In short, use whatever gets your work done quickly, which also keeps you or your devs/users happy. That is all matter. Apart from that, it would be best if you took all other precautions to secure your OS, such as regularly applying patches, and firewalls, installing adblocker, not downloading unwanted stuff and clicking on the links, regardless of whether it is Win11, macOS, Debian/Ubuntu Linux, or OpenBSD.
Elon Musk said there would be another subscription option for a Twitter app like YouTube premium with zero ads for those who can afford it. He said the price would be more than Twitter blue, and work is in progress. The question is, how many premium ad-free subscriptions can one person get? YouTube? Tumblr? Twitter? Facebook? Insta? It could easily be $100 per month.
YouTube, AdSense, and DoubleClick? Wow. All those are Google's money-making products. Both YouTube and AdSense helped countless content creators across the globe. Not everyone goes to CS school or other graduate programmes for various reasons. These content creators make a good living too, I guess (at least top 5-10% content creators makes good living, but I don't any data to backup). So in a way, if you make money from YouTube or AdSense, then Susan played a big role for sure. Also, regardless of what HN think of Google Ads and Google's privacy policies, it fundamentally helped some those content creators, including support and development for other free Google products such as Gmail, Maps, Search and others stuff etc.
Both MS and Google are evil. Therefore, there is no reason for VS code to enable this tracking; the same goes for Golang and Google. What next? Adblocker/tracker blocker extension for IDEs and compilers?
I sent a $25 Xbox gift card to a kid as Xmas gift. Guess what? The card was faulty, and the numbers were not visible at all. They sent me a picture and asked if Amazon would replace it. So, I contacted Amazon support, and they asked me to send a card back and gave me a return shipping label assuring me that it was under Amazon A-Z Guarantee. When my friend sent the card to them, they only refunded $0.32 and said the rest was restocking fees. Imagine if someone is buying MacBook Air worth $1000 and Amazon is giving you $1 as a refund saying $999 was a restocking fee. I explained to support over chat that it was a damaged Xbox gift card, but they refused and thought my friend messed it up while scratching it. So fuck Amazon. Their support is gone down hill, and it is all money-grabbing and scamming sellers. Also, they deleted my review. Only 5 stars reviews are appearing on the page except one person with similar issue.
Keepassxc allows you to store those TOTP codes and lock your password database using Yubikey. Even if someone stoles your password database file, it won't work as the attacker needs your Yubikey too.
For non-tech folks, I helped a few, and they all loved WordPress. They have simple pricing and a good mobile app with decent support https://wordpress.com/pricing/. Of course, there are other options, too like Ghost Pro https://ghost.org/pricing/
It is not just Tesla. Apple is down too, and many other famous brands are also listed. Here is more balance article: Apple and Tesla: Tech shares tumble amid supply issues https://www.bbc.com/news/business-64099654
I understand why they banned it. However, I also know western apps are closed to work in the Chinese market. So I get privacy and security are reasons to ban the TikTok app at the school or government level. However, I would like to see the same tight control for every app that invades privacy regardless if it was made in the EU, USA, China, etc. Is that too much to ask? Or is lobbying so intense from Google, Amazon, Meta, Apple (who is now getting into the Ads business too), and co that it is next to impossible to have tight privacy control with these apps?
Meta (FB) doesn't ban links to blogs or other social media but heavily throttles (lock it) it until you start paying for it. Here is the comic that explains it better https://theoatmeal.com/comics/reaching_people Also, links are not clickable on Insta. Similarly, WhatsApp also block if URLs/images/vidoes if shared too many times (at least in India, there is some rule or something like that for Fake news, I forgot the details but they use AI and mods to throttle WhatsApp for sure )
Context: from Twitter[0] - "When we made Instagram ads to show you just how you got targeted, we got our ad account disabled. But now Facebook is putting it right out there ~ https://facebook.com/ads/about/ "
That is a thoughtful reply. Working in IT spoiled me, and I like having a backup or failover server or data centre but for Apple factory. But, it makes sense now, knowing the scale of this Apple iPhone factory, it is next to impossible to build the backup factory. Thanks!
Three hundred thousand workers work at a factory in China to make iPhones? I didn't realise how massive the production line is, considering they have a 23% market share, and the rest is all Android lead by Samsung. I am always surprised that Apple (or other Western tech giants) never considered building backup factories. Did they never think about geopolitics or natural disasters and panamics?
Apart from that iPhone will be cheaper in India because it cuts down all import duties, and who knows what other tax/land benefits the government of India/State government will provide them so that massive employment will be created. So it might help India in the long run, provided Indian governments give proper support to build these factories, especially in bureaucratic policies.
Have you considered your alternate wealth? Say, good physical health. Many folks have money/richness but not good physical or mental health. Of course, I am not saying you shouldn't get rich or anything but count your blessing, which could worsen. Don't overthink the future or past and missing out stuff; it is an unnecessary burden. Live in the current time and enjoy each day. The anxiety will reduce slowly, and wealth+happiness will follow gradually. At least, that is how I see it. YMMV.
In South India, they have a carbohydrate-rich diet. So when you get hit badly with T2D, you switch to fish, limited brown/red rice, and veggies. In most cases, all of your medication stop if you maintain your weight and diet with exercise. Unfortunately, only some maintain a diet and healthy weight. Even 10 kg weight loss gives far better control for T2D.
Wow. I last updated my humans.txt[0] file many moons ago. It is one of those things you find the first time, jump on it, and then forget about it. LOL. I guess the same goes for security.txt[1]
