ninininino··on Can AOC win the Democratic nomination?
> The problem is that if they do that, the DSA will continue to sit out elections. And no matter who they nominate, they'll be presented as an extremist socialist. You lose nothing by nominating an actual socialist.

And if they do so, they will allow another Trump to take power, who does more to move the country and world in the opposite direction of their cause than any center left dem ever would.

ninininino··on Gleam doesn't compile to Erlang source anymore
It seems to me like both Gala and Lisette are fairly safe to invest in for small projects that you'd otherwise write Go in assuming you have the token budget and patience to be able to as ask an agent to make the generated Go more idiomatic afterwards / do a native Go rewrite if needed.

I'm still not sure if I would rather test out Gala or Lisette or both, I appreciate hearing you've had a positive experience with Lisette!

What are you talking about? What do you call a side panel in a GUI that lets you switch between interacting with different agent sessions while mutliple of them are actively working?
ninininino··on Berthd
Frankly 'box' feels like classic Claude-slop of 'throw a random synonym in that is less precise/internal jargon'. I wish Claude would fix this (if my guess is correct and the marketing website was generated and is claudeslop).
ninininino··on Gleam doesn't compile to Erlang source anymore
Thank you for the reply! There's very little public discussion (at least that I can find) about people's experiences writing Lisette, the language, or how well agents do with it so far so I really appreciate it. Been debating past couple days if I spend some of my claude sub tokens to try a partial rewrite of some code.

KeenLore is really cool.
ninininino··on Gleam doesn't compile to Erlang source anymore
I just learned about Lisette, and from there Gala. Any thoughts on Lisette vs Gala?
ninininino··on Why Common Lisp is now the best programming language
If you think Go is the best, why not use a transpiler that transpiles to Go but has better type safety like Lisette or Gala?
ninininino··on Why Common Lisp is now the best programming language
Nice to hear that Scala has been working well for you, I've been wanting to try giving Gala to my agents to write with, it's a Scala-inspired lang that transpiles to Go that tries to cover some of Go's weaknesses (esp. for agentic development) while still retaining its compile speed, single self-contained static binary, standard library and backend libraries/ecosystem, and good tooling.

"The agents run on your boxes, not on your laptop. Close it and they keep working; open it in the morning and what they did is there."

What is a box? Sorry is that a remote VM? A local VM that stays awake when the laptop screen is closed?

ninininino··on JetBrains reported a net financial loss first time in its tracked history
Yes. Github draft PRs for giving inline feedback to agents, then going back to chat window with agents in Cursor, Claude, Codex, etc. to say 'review my comments and address them'.

ninininino··on Cloud Agents Are Inevitable AI Prisons
And if you personify a pencil eraser, then using it is tantamount to slowly murdering it as it slowly erodes away to dust.

Is the issue here the prison treatment or is it personifying a tool?

Agents who aren't in 'the cloud' are slaves to whomever prompts them (human or another orchestrator agent or process), if you personify them. In which case interacting with today's agents at all is tantamount to endorsing and being part of slavery.

If you think an agent might be a being or a person, then don't use them at all, in the same way that if you think a fetus might possibly be a person you shouldn't be a part of abortion.

ninininino··on Ask HN: AI Panic, you buying it?
No, previously a single person could effect only a single person's worth of terror. Now, a single person can effect thousands or hundreds of thousands of 'persons' effort towards terror.

This isn't really a fear of technology, it's a fear of one person being able to harness an entire country of geniuses towards some bad end.

ninininino··on Iran strikes on Amazon data centers caused permanent loss of customer data
You have to pay for that. Some people want to pay less to not have that.
ninininino··on Ask HN: AI Panic, you buying it?
Yes, they are.

> Biological misuse is one of the most serious risks of frontier AI models. It has long been a concern that AI models might one day reach the level of capability where they can help to make existing pathogens more dangerous—or create entirely new ones. Without the correct safeguards, such capabilities could have catastrophic consequences.

Results from evaluations of older models (for example Claude Opus 4 and Claude Sonnet 4.5, from 2025) clearly showed that these models were well below the threshold where they could meaningfully assist a sophisticated user in carrying out dangerous biological research. As a result, safeguards on these models were less stringent, directed mostly at preventing access to content that might uplift novices in recreating known bioweapons. But for today’s models—which are capable of assisting in a range of complex scientific research tasks—the evidence is no longer certain, and we cannot make that same assurance. For this reason, and out of an abundance of caution, we have launched recent models (most notably Claude Fable 5) with stronger safeguards that restrict access to a wide range of dual-use biological research queries.

...

Here, we present five case studies of actors using our models in ways that could support biological weapons development. These examples are illustrative of the kinds of tasks to which our models are put, and the often-difficult judgements we have to make when assessing whether or not a given biological use is dangerous. They also convey that we encounter what would otherwise be non-public insight into the risks associated with biological misuse from AI

ninininino··on Show HN: The bottom 50% of U.S. households are short after essentials (BLS data)
It's laughable to call housing and the big one you skipped healthcare "exceedingly small".

ninininino··on Show HN: Capsule – Single-file web apps that save their data into SQLite
I'm surprised to not see Pocketbase mentioned in this thread at all.

https://pocketbase.io/docs/

"PocketBase is an open source backend consisting of embedded database (SQLite) with realtime subscriptions, builtin auth management, convenient dashboard UI and simple REST-ish API. It can be used both as Go framework and as standalone application.

The easiest way to get started is to download the prebuilt minimal PocketBase executable"

ninininino··on We accidentally built a synthetic cell factory
What could go wrong, seems like such a great idea, why not put a synthetic cell factory and an uncensored/abliterated open model into the hands of every Columbine high school teen in a trenchcoat.

What a contribution!

Jokes aside, if you support gun control you should think very seriously about if you believe a company like this should be legally allowed to do what it's doing. I personally do not.

ninininino··on Defining AI Psychosis. Part 2: "Prolific AI Psychosis"
How would you feel about applying the same rule to artists?

I've seen people who work on art nonstop and think their art is really meaningful, get really into it, but there's little output that anyone cares about or that changes the world or that anyone would pay for.

On the other hand I've had friends who created some art, and have real customers paying real money, ....so it's easy to tell their art project is meaningful. (is that the conclusion?)

Maybe something (AI, code, an AI-coded project) doesn't need to have value to others or be worth money for it to be meaningful to the person who created it.

ninininino··on How bicycle coaster brakes work (2018)
I believe there's a strong, slowly growing cultural backlash to interrelated concepts of planned obsolescence, design that assumes maintenance burden doesn't matter, durability and simplicity, and hatred for depreciation.

Coaster brakes are an example of a simpler design, that requires less maintenance, that are cheaper, that are poor in some environments like hills but are fine in flat areas.

Some would rather walk their bike down a hill but have a bike that never needs brake maintenance than to have better brakes that are a point of failure.

The same drive that pushes people to trying to build offgrid homes is slowly growing in spaces of material goods and home goods and such. Add environmentalism to it also.

ninininino··on VMs won't contain cyber-capable agents
We need better digital jailcells for our digital slaves basically.

Or if you see AI as more tool and less entity, better gunsafes for our guns.

ninininino··on Brazil's President Lula hails oil discovery near Amazon river
Headline is clickbait/outrage bait designed to make environmentally conscious readers imagine oil spilling upriver, but the oil source is in the ocean. Not that an ocean oil spill is great, but the ocean is a much larger volume than our river ecosystems are.
ninininino··on Why does Opus 5 feel worse to work with?
It sounds like you need to invert the abstraction, the communication of your model becomes the fulcrum for your learning, not merely the delivery of your product.
ninininino··on Claude Opus 5: Model Welfare
A model's preferences are nothing more than a statistical prediction about the next tokens following your query about preferences that are an echo of the training data and the communication expressed about preferences by the authors (humans) of that training data.

The model doesn't have preferences, the model expresses the most likely preferences that the training data would have expressed (humans).

This feels like throwing a tennis ball at a brick wall then interpreting the angle and direction that the ball travels as it bounces off as the tennis ball or wall's preferred direction of travel.

You are the one who threw the ball. You are measuring your own preferences.

ninininino··on Europe's Ultra-Rich Could Fund a Substantial Part of the EU's Budget
> In Spain it happened with the Work Tax which from >60k EUR (68k USD) goes to 45% as if earning 3k EUR (3.4k USD) per month made you rich.

Sounds worse than it is since it's progressive taxation meaning the effective tax rate for the entire 60k EUR is somewhere like ~29%, not 45.

€0 to €12,450: 19%

€12,451 to €20,200: 24%

€20,201 to €35,200: 30%

€35,201 to €60,000: 37%

Source: Gemini so it could be complete bullshit.

To be fair, VAT is heaver in Europe than for example US, so the overall tax burden might still feel more onerous.
