nimvlaj30··on Ask HN: How do you handle Authorization?
There are two ways (that I'm aware of) of doing auth; JWT tokens or storing sessions in database. Sessions in database is probably the most secure way. But I'm working with a React SPA, so I'm using JWT tokens.

I've only had brief familiarity with using Amazon Cognito for work. Pain points are that I'm not sure how secure storing JWT tokens in the browser's localstorage is. I briefly looked into HTTP-only cookies, but it seems more difficult to set, and also not really worth it?

It seems that CSRF and XSS vulnerabilities remain an unsolved problem. If you want to improve on something in that space, I'd say security is the major area to do it in. Seriously, I'd put up with more technical pain than AWS Amplify's Javascript library is giving me just to guarantee that the application is secure.

Hanlon's Razor is just a heuristic. What is the reasoning for following it? Or do we just blindly follow an age-old adage because it sounds philosophical?
nimvlaj30··on IMGZ – Paid image sharing
I don't know why talk like this gets a reputation as being straightforward and no-BS. It would be more straightforward and have less BS if it just said, "Image sharing made simple. Like imgur, but without he bullshit."

Not a long ramble about being ashamed (why?) about an image board I never even think of.

nimvlaj30··on Windows 11: Just say no

nimvlaj30··on “Nihilism is OK” is not OK
This was my feeling too
nimvlaj30··on “Nihilism is OK” is not OK
I define a nihilist as someone who believes that nothing has objective meaning. The universe, relationships, and suffering have no objective meaning; in a few years anyone who remembered any of it will be dead, and its cause-and-effect consequences will be recursively finite.

I wrestled with this in my undergrad, which plunged me into a depression that I had never known before. This was doubly troublesome for me because I had previously believed that God existed and had a plan for my life– some kind of universal determinism, destiny, or fate. Going from that mental model of the universe, to one in which the universe is random, cold, uncaring, and devoid of meaning is quite a shock to the mental health.

My happiness came back significantly once I discovered Existentialism, which the author seems to dislike. Existentialism is the belief that while there is no objective meaning to the universe, there is a subjective meaning. I can love my wife, enjoy my job, and enjoy a few brews with my buddies. All of those matter to me, and they don't have to have universal significance. They don't have to have objective meaning. Hell, people might not even be truly conscious or free anyway. It's not going to stop me from having a good time and loving life.

The author makes broad assertions with very little explanation and few references to back them up. I'm still not convinced nihilism makes you miserable and ineffective. I'm still not convinced that that wouldn't be ok from an objective standpoint (although I'd have a problem with it, subjectively). I'm not convinced that it erodes our culture's ability to tackle problems or change people for the better (in fact, maybe it's the first step). And even if it did, who is to say that isn't okay? Obviously those who lose out will not like it (subjective meaning). But there is no objective meaning to any of this. It's random, inconsequential, cause-and-effect bullshit from top to bottom. Who says it means anything at all?

But if it means something to you, then that's great.

nimvlaj30··on Young People Are Anxious About Climate Change, Say Governments Are Failing Them
What you are saying would make sense if we ignore the context of the conversation. OP is losing sleep, which is a common way of telling the reader that their mental health is suffering due to wrestling with the concept of climate change and how society is underprepared for it.

If we ignore all that, then it sounds like I'm saying to give up. But if we take the context into account, it is evident that I'm actually giving OP advice on how to mentally and emotionally survive the coming apocalypse.

Though, maybe I should have been more clear.

> which could easily be interpreted

Perhaps there are more than one way in which to interpret certain concepts? Or maybe I'm interpreting your comment wrong?

nimvlaj30··on Contempt Culture (2015)

nimvlaj30··on Young People Are Anxious About Climate Change, Say Governments Are Failing Them
Damn nice hate. OP was saying how he is losing sleep over climate change.

The requirements involved with contributing to slowing (or stopping) climate change do not include worrying about it. If you are losing sleep, you would benefit from changing your attitude towards it.

Civilisational decline is a constant. It is coming. Accept it now, and work to delay it if you can make a meaningful change. If not, don't lose sleep over it.

I'm doing what I can to invest in future green tech and trying to limit my consumption. I am NOT losing sleep over the fact that we probably don't have much more of a future as a race.

> God grant me the serenity

> to accept the things I cannot change;

> courage to change the things I can;

> and wisdom to know the difference.

Civilisation as we know it, and perhaps even humanity is in the process of ending. The ending is inevitable, whether it is now or nearer to the heat death of the universe.

If you can personally try and affect change, then you should do it. But more likely, you are a slave to the same system that everyone else is. I'd recommend working on acceptance at this point.

nimvlaj30··on “Nihilism is OK” is not OK
I know right, lots of opinionated statements and very little to back it up. Here is just one paragraph in the intro:

> Nihilism makes you miserable and ineffective.

Why?

> That is not OK.

Why?

> It also erodes our cultures’ and societies’ ability to improve lives and tackle urgent problems.

Why?

> That is also not OK.

Why?

Apparently it is possible to create QR codes on Factorio's minimap as well. I wonder if it could be automated using the in-game construction bots.

You're right. I thought Protonmail Bridge was IMAP support, but it isn't.
nimvlaj30··on Financial literacy is a passport to financial freedom
You have a very grim and victim-based view of financial reality. While you are partially correct, the system is working against the individual, you are also dismissing that there is some wiggle room for these people to improve their financial standing.

By improving your own education, working hard, and learning good financial habits, you can be at least somewhat better off. You will always suffer at the hands of this capitalist machine that chews the poor and spits them out. But with some level of self-discipline you can (at least slightly) improve your life and the lives of your offspring.

Lots of success is based on probability, so with luck, hard work, and financial literacy you may even be much better off.

I come at this from a data security point of view. I honestly don't care if police want to read my data. If some knocked on my door with a warrant, I'd gladly decrypt my drives. I have nothing illegal on them.

What I do have a problem with is anti-encryption laws weakening the security of my services. Hackers are getting better and better. Nation states are DDoSing services that I use, and leaking the details.

Police wanting backdoors means that real end-to-end encryption isn't even an option. This opens me up to vectors of attack from people I don't even know, who are desperate for my money or identity.

For that reason, my threat model includes corporations and government. Although, if asked to decrypt my data in person and hand it over, I will with no issues.

nimvlaj30··on Covid in Sydney: Military deployed to help enforce lockdown
From my perspective as a progressive, the Federal government are corrupt, lazy, and have an extreme inability to get things done.

Scott Morrison, the prime minster, had the opportunity to purchase more vaccines, and was advised to "purchase as many as you can" by public health advisors. Instead, he did what he and the rest of the Liberal Party of Australia (conservative) have always done...

Not purchase enough, then shift the blame to the individual states and let them fight over what few vaccines were actually purchased.

There has been months of advertisements rolling, advising under 50s to head to their GP and get an Astrazeneca shot. I am in my late 20s, and have gone to my GP multiple times only to be told I'm not part of the roll out. The ads from the government tell me I can get a vaccine, but my GP says there are no vaccines.

Our government only know how to spin and market.

The Liberal party have literally been marketing a solution (get vaccinated) that they don't have, because they never had enough vaccines in the first place.

nimvlaj30··on Ask HN: Can anybody compile all of Paul Graham's essays into a .mobi file?
Have a look at pandoc. That's usually my go-to tool when converting file formats. It supports mobi.
nimvlaj30··on Twitter confirms Twitter Blue
There is a way around this. Twitter should not be relying on phone numbers to verify identity or intent.
nimvlaj30··on Twitter confirms Twitter Blue
I never got the opportunity to get involved in Twitter because of these experiences:

1. Few people outside the politics sphere use Twitter in Australia. It's all politicians, public relations specialists, and journos. I could create an account and try and interact, but I'm unlikely be interacting with people who have any influence in my hemisphere of the world.

2. I once made an account anyway, out of curiosity, and was immediately defamed by someone I hadn't even met. To the point of having to delete the service, scorched earth.

3. Eventually I had to create an account to use the Twitter API as part of a big data assignment. However, every time I tried to verify my account, no email or text message would make its way to me. I contacted support for months, with no replies. Ended up having to use the tutor's Twitter account (which I'm sure would have breached ToS).

It's been over a year, and I still haven't received a reply from Twitter. Maybe they just don't want me to have an account?

Why would I get involved after all this? Seems like more trouble than its worth, to be honest.

nimvlaj30··on Why do older individuals have greater control of their feelings?
Reality is that most learn to cope with life a lot better as they grow older.

My life objectively sucks more now. I have way less free time, and am under harsher constraints. But I am saddled with way less depression and anxiety. I am enjoying life more than ever. I don't go to sleep crying or ruminating every night anymore.

People saying "well your life sucks but it's only going to get worse" are inadvertently being mean and unhelpful. I can imagine probably offing myself, had I heard that advice at the wrong moment growing up.

It didn't get worse. It got better, even though the circumstances got worse, because my ability to handle them got much better.

Is washing your hands before eating being a "germophobe" or is it basic hygiene? How far back do we go in order to improve our immune system? Do we stop washing our hands ever? Do we stop washing taking showers?

There's obviously a balance with the best outcome. I doubt washing your hands before eating will make your immune system any worse.
