nikhilpandit··on Slack Acquires Screenhero (YC W13)
I used screenhero for some remote work. It's great for pair programming and helping debug a problem remotely. Since our team used Slack, I really wished Slack would add similar functionality to their product. Glad to see that it's going to happen now, and will be built by the people who built the awesome screehero product. Congrats guys! hope to see more awesome work from you!
nikhilpandit··on Stack Exchange Raises $40M Led by A16Z to Boost Its Programmer Forums
In my experience (speaking from the employer point of view), SO Careers has been pretty good. Most of the people who applied were looking to work remotely (which was fine by us), so that might skew the experience (as in, not sure what the response quality would be if we didn't select "remote work ok" given that most of our respondents wanted to work remotely).

Not my site. Just found it and thought it was worth sharing.

Not sure if they print the whole thing with colors or if the printed piece is colored later on.

nikhilpandit··on Escape The Cold
We are Rails based, but are happy to hire people with Python + Django experience too, if they are willing to learn. We have hired people before who didn't have much Rails experience but came with an overall solid background in programming and were able to pick up Rails pretty quickly.
nikhilpandit··on Ask HN: What packages does everyone use for Sublime Text?
vintage mode with a few minor modifications

iTodo plugin (makes it easy to write simple todo lists in Sublime, with functionality to add tasks and mark them as complete)

nikhilpandit··on Rent the country of Liechtenstein for $70,000 a night with Airbnb
Another fun fact related to this story: Snoop Dogg tried to rent Liechtenstein in the past, but was not able to. (source: http://www.theatlanticwire.com/entertainment/2010/07/snoop-d...)

He should try using AirBnB next time!

From what I understood (from this article and others that I read on the subject), the previous settlement is still valid.
nikhilpandit··on Show HN: My weekend project for those who obsessively follow AAPL, GOOG & MSFT
Very cool. Would love to be able to compare other companies too (even a simple textbox that lets me change one of the columns by entering a different ticker symbol would work).
nikhilpandit··on Dilbert on Cloud Computing
From Scott Adams old blog post on the redesign of the website:

"The fascinating thing about the responses is that it revealed three distinct types of Dilbert readers:

The first group is the ultra-techies who have an almost romantic relationship with technology. For them, the new site felt like getting dumped by a lover. Their high-end technology (generally Linux) and security settings made much of the site inconvenient. Moreover, the use of Flash offended them on some deep emotional level.

The second group objected to the new level of color and complexity, and the associated slowness. They like their Dilbert comics simple, fast, and in two colors. Anything more is like putting pants on a cat.

The third group uses technology as nothing more than a tool, and subscribes to the philosophy that more free stuff is better than less free stuff. That group has embraced the new features on the site and spiked the traffic stats.

For you first two groups, if you promise to keep it to yourselves, we created a stripped-down Dilbert page with just the comic, some text navigation, and the archive: www.dilbert.com/fast. This alternate site is a minor secret, mentioned only here and in the text footnote to the regular site as “Linux/Unix.”"

nikhilpandit··on Immigration for Startups
I am not sure if the article suggests J-1 for people who are studying abroad, or for international students studying in the US. For international students studying in the US, I would highly recommend being on a F-1 visa instead of a J-1 visa and then applying for a CPT (or OPT if you are done with college) for an internship. J-1 has a requirement of working for two years in your home country after graduation. If you plan to continue working for the startup after graduation, this 2 year requirement could become a big issue (you need to apply for a J-1 waiver and do quite some paperwork to get rid of it).

In general, for international students studying in the US who want to start companies or work at an early stage startup in the US, I would recommend reading up the CPT and OPT rules. Those can be very useful in the early days until you have sufficient funding to move to a visa category like H-1B that has a minimum salary requirement.

nikhilpandit··on Ask HN: Will a early stage startup sponsor a H1B visa?
Whether or not a startup will sponsor depends on a case by case basis. In some cases, even if the company wants to, they might not have the resources to sponsor a visa. On the other hand, if they have the right amount of money in the bank (to pay the visa fees and show that they can afford your salary) and can get a hold of a good lawyer, it's not an impossible process.
