Yeah ive always been blown away by how fast memcpy is. I'm guessing the OP is from a different world of engineering than I am.

I care about it because it's unexpected. I seek to wrap my mind as fully as possible around the behavior of my programs. Unexpected behavior like this indicates there is something I do not understand. I cannot rely on my programs if I do not understand them. I cannot state they are robust and stable if I do not understand these sorts of details.

I'm a Godot contributor.

The 3d renderer is okay, but I'm hesitant to call it good. It's not as good as Unity nor Unreal, imo.

The internal profiler really sucks.

Everything is possible if "some work". Porting to PlayStation 5 is probably a lot of work.

I'm a Godot fan boy, but we gotta be honest about its flaws.

If your targeting 3D on console, definitely go with Unity or Unreal imo.

I don't know how you can confidently say "if close fails, who cares" all over this thread.

If close fails, I wanna know and I wanna know why.

Your comments are accurate, but they aren't the whole story.

> unsuitable for anything more than a couple hundred lines at most.

I work profesionally in ~5 code bases with ~10,000 lines of GDScript each. I think GDScript is great for UI widgets. I dont think you can say it has a 'line number' limit. It has a 'complexity' limit.

If your writing a ton of tiny little classes that do one thing (like play a sound when a button is pressed), then GDScript is probably the best language for that. Certainly c++ is not the best, and C# is perhaps worse as well. Note: GDScript doesnt need to be compiled _at all_. In unity, its common to have an annoying 'hang' every time you alt-tab from vscode back to unity, as the c# is compiled. In Godot, I can write a new UI widget directly in the editor, with no compilation hang, with hot reloading. It's simply a smoother experience for writing the mountain of basic plumbing that you write when making a commercial game. It's not all complex algorithms here, it's just a crapload of boring ass code. And GDScript is great for that.

Most of the code in games is tiny little things that manage sequences of animations. There is seriously so much small code to make a UI look and feel nice. Writing this code in GDScript is way faster and ergonomic than any other language I've used.

I agree, GDScript has many flaws, but from where I'm sitting (small studio, been in the industry for 10 years), GDScript is a massive boost for my productivity.

For complex stuff, I like to figure out the algoirithm in GDScript then rewrite it in C++ if it needs it. Works great. Again, massive increase in productivity.

It does have hot reloading at some level. I use GDSCript for a lot of stuff and it hot reloads. And you can use live++ with it to have true top level hot reloading. We implemented a hacky live reloading for native code in shared libraries which works as well.

> I don't understand the hostility.

Saying this while telling me this is the wrong site for me. Nice.

My comment isn't hostile. My opinion on this github has value and I am not alone. I could have worded it 'nicely' but if you find every brutally honest comment to be hostile, then maybe this site isnt for you.

nightowl_games··on Project Hammer: reduce collusion in the Canadian grocery sector
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federated_Co-operatives

They are not a private company, they run the store as a member owned cooperative. I'm a member, for instance. I have a number and get a discount and some cash back at the end of the year.

If this theory of collusion is true, the coop should be cheaper then right? It's not! Loblaws is typically the cheapest.

nightowl_games··on Project Hammer: reduce collusion in the Canadian grocery sector
I live in Saskatchewan and pay ~50$ for 10GB of data/month. I'm not on a Sasktel plan, as I found a cheaper option through one of the privatized networks, however Sasktel has a new subsidiary: Lum Mobile, to compete with the cheap plans like what I'm using. I know someone who has some discount at Sasktel and pays ~50$/month for 75GB(!) of data.

When I was in toronto the guy at the hotel had a 306 (saskatchewan) phone number because it was cheaper.

Sasktel is a great provider. I have fiber to the home in my house, for instance.

As a game dev, this GitHub is comical to me. Bordering on parody of the kind of academic navel gazing that game devs stick their nose up at. Cherry on top is the ugly screenshot.

As a professional game dev who has years of experience producing real products in both Unity and Godot, I am totally not with you about your thoughts on Godot vs unity.

Godots signals are such a huge step up over Unity's built in classes having a lack of modularity.

How do you even make sense of that? Godot vs Unity basically have the same scene/node/component model except Godot does it better imo. Eg) What is the difference between a prefab vs a scene in Unity anyways? Basically nothing, it's just (I'm speculating) a tech debt mistake in their design, probably still going because of how light maps work today.

Unity's advantage over Godot is it's 3D renderer, built in physX, il2cpp backend for C#, profiler, general runtime performance and console support.

Godots design is objectively more cohesive, as Unity has simply splintered into 10 different design directions since ~2018.

I'm not trying to be a hater, I just think signals are a huge advantage for writing modular, simple stuff in Godot. I think there's plenty of great reasons to prefer Unity to Godot but "signals" is not one of em.

nightowl_games··on Godot on iPad, Toolbars, Importers, Embedding, Debugger
Almost definitely no to both your questions. Godot doesnt have enough developer resources to work on this, and this repo's value is truly marginal. I really don't see the use case. I think this guy is just having fun.

His fork will likely become out of date with upstream pretty quickly once he stops working on it, id imagine.

I get the criticism of manager mode but does this article really articulate what founder mode is? Does it deliberately not specify it in order to leave it to Chesky's talk?

nightowl_games··on U.S. Ambassador says Canadians are consuming 'unhealthy' amount of American news
> Then they just layer on a "aren't you glad you aren't American?"

Can you point to an example? I dont get this vibe.

> The CBC basically parrots the US mainstream media like MSNBC and CNN.

On what issues? On American politics issues, I do find CBC to use less inflammatory language than MSNBC and certain anchors on CNN.

> Rampant immigration?

Are you referring to immigration to Canada? You say 'rampant immigration' as if it is implicit that 'immigration' itself is bad. You didnt feel the need to specify or qualify anything other than 'immigration'. This is such a severe oversight to me that it discredits your opinion on these types of topics in my eyes. There is so much to unpack in Canadas immigration policy that to categorize it away as 'rampant immigration' is telling of a lack of understanding of the details of the topic of immigration in Canada.

nightowl_games··on Just use fucking paper, man
I literally just have a single text document called todo.md that I write the date and what I want to do in it and then cross it out when im done.

its good for remember what I was working on yesterday to keep a smooth continuitity. Helps me get 'back on task' quick.

Its seriously just a single document with like 5 bullet points in it each day. I barely ever scroll down. Latest day is always at the top.

Definetly need to split this further:

Prairies - Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta

Mountains - Everything inside the Rockies

BC - Its it's own thing

nightowl_games··on Ask HN: Which movies did you watch multiple times?
I hear you. Fight Club had a big impact on me as well.
nightowl_games··on Ask HN: Which movies did you watch multiple times?
I first watched Pulp Fiction when I was ~13. I had it on DVD and didn't know what to expect. Watched it alone at the farm when I was just bored. I was blown away. For some reason I watched each scene twice in a row, first the scene, then again with the directors commentary. I don't think I ever did that again, but it was one of the most enjoyable movie experiences of my life.
nightowl_games··on Microsoft's latest security update has ruined dual-boot Windows and Linux PCs
I'd imagine the place that is going to run better on windows is GPU drivers... If the game is GPU bound it will probably always run better on windows. If the game has other bottlenecks perhaps WINE can out perform windows.

nightowl_games··on Microsoft's latest security update has ruined dual-boot Windows and Linux PCs
I have consider it and done it before. I largely play StarCraft 2 and I simply want the maximum frame rate..I've played sc2 on Linux before but I kinda like the simplicity of just booting into windows, the feeling of having the max performance, and also some games I play do run anti cheat stuff that doesn't work on Linux.

Overall Linux gaming is pretty sweet tho I agree. Lutris is incredible.

Plus I like the work/play divide that booting into windows provides

nightowl_games··on Microsoft's latest security update has ruined dual-boot Windows and Linux PCs
Yeah it broke my Linux Mint. I run mint all day while developing and then switch to windows 11 to game every once in a while.

I think there's a way to fix it but I had to disable secure boot to work this week.

I've had way more issues with windows 11 than with linux Mint. Like way more.
