niggler··on Poll: Undergraduate Alma Mater
I don't disagree, but the entire process is pretty subjective (there are many variables to take into account, and weights are somewhat arbitrary). USNWR provides a concrete list for the discussion and I think the top 20 captures the spirit of the original question.
niggler··on Poll: Undergraduate Alma Mater
In retrospect, I wish I added that initially. But at this stage, enough people voted that the number wouldn't be perfect.
niggler··on Managers to Millennials: Job Interview No Time to Text
Let's put it to a poll: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=5628769
niggler··on Managers to Millennials: Job Interview No Time to Text
I wonder if our perspective on the job market is tinted by the fact that (I suspect) the overwhelming majority of graduates on HN are alumni of Ivy League or other top schools.
niggler··on Microsoft Azure Sales Top $1 Billion, Challenging Amazon
How are the free hours from BizSpark handled? (http://www.windowsazure.com/en-us/offers/ms-azr-0012p) Are those treated as sales?
niggler··on Ghost: Just a Blogging Platform
It goes against the original spirit of kickstarter.

Although it was targeted towards hardware products, I think similar guidelines should be in place for software: http://www.kickstarter.com/blog/kickstarter-is-not-a-store

"Product simulations are prohibited. Projects cannot simulate events to demonstrate what a product might do in the future. Products can only be shown performing actions that they’re able to perform in their current state of development."

And this makes sense in light of true software development: 10% of the time is spent building the rough prototype and 90% of the time is spent refining. And oftentimes the development money is useful for the tedium like tests and validation,.

niggler··on Ask HN: Who built XMLHttpRequest at Microsoft in 1999?
I think Crockford (http://crockford.com/) -- he is mentioned in the RFC: http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc4627.txt?number=4627
niggler··on Ghost: Just a Blogging Platform
That would require the person doing the kickstarter to commit time to the project. I get the impression from most of these software-development kickstarters that the goal is to get payment in advance of the dev work.
niggler··on The //* /*/ //*/ comment toggle trick
The standard is `NDEBUG`, which (amongst other things) turns off asserts
niggler··on Wikipedia’s Sexism
I'm confused by "American (Men|Women) Novelists". If both exist, then what's the point of American Novelists?
niggler··on Wall Street Is Gobbling Up Two-Thirds of Your 401(k)
Except for those companies where you must have a 401K in order to collect a company matching contribution, in which case you are net ahead by keeping it in the 401K rather than forgoing the match
niggler··on Diederik Stapel’s Audacious Academic Fraud
I was going to write a response, but the following comment from the site summarizes my thoughts: "If Staple's ambition says a lot about science as a business, then the credulity of his reviewers and colleagues speaks volumes about science as a religion. The sacred trust people place in science and the scientific method is sadly misplaced. The awe evoked by science popularizers like Carl Sagan and Neil deGrasse Tyson isn't all that different than the pomp and ceremony that surrounds the pope. And yet, it really should be the night sky that moves us, not the flattering self-portrait that science paints of ourselves and our intellects.

Simply put, science isn't all that different than other human endeavours wherein people compete for prizes. Stop putting scientists on a pedestal."

niggler··on How Medicare Became a Thieves' Bazaar
What are the actual figures regarding Medicare fraud? I've seen conservative groups quote numbers like $.20-$.50 of each medicare dollar while liberal groups quote numbers like $.01-$.05
niggler··on Zach Braff, Amanda Palmer, and the New 90-9-1 Rule
That's one aspect of Kickstarter that never made sense to me -- why is there no way to take an "equity" stake? For the sums of money involved relative to the total kickstarter (oftentimes you see targets at roughly 1% of the target amount to be raised), I would think that some of the tiers should get some sort of stake.
niggler··on Why the Rent Is So High in New York
NYC is such a desirable place for people to live that demand will be very strong and supply will be tight for a very long time. Economics 101 suggests that prices will be elevated as a result.
niggler··on Obsession
No amount of words on my part can capture the essence of the message better than this: http://bitsandpieces.us/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/famous-fa...

The words would be something along the lines of "good grades are indicative of discipline and work ethic moreso than intellectual capacity" and that many people that we consider extremely intelligent or gifted had really poor grades.

niggler··on AOL Is Shutting Down AOL Music
I wonder when we'll see "AOL is shutting down TechCrunch"
niggler··on Why Markdown Is Not My Favourite Language
The fact that the other ambiguity references a stackoverflow article suggests that the author may not have actually looked at the spec.

TBH the article reads like an elaborate advertisement for Creole.

niggler··on Why Markdown Is Not My Favourite Language
My biggest issue with markdown involves links. Parentheses are allowed in URLs and those confuse most markdown parsers:

niggler··on A speedy, more secure way to view Microsoft Office files directly in Chrome
Shameless plug: I've been working on pure-JS parsers for XLS and XLSX files (from old and newer versions of excel):

niggler··on C++ on the web: emscripten, nacl, flascc
"JavaScript as the main programming language"

Using node (or the v8 shell directly) javascript is competitive with python or perl for most common scripting tasks

niggler··on Box2d Revisited

    C (gcc 4.2.1)	2.62 +/- 0.24	1.0x
    NaCl (x86-32)	3.39 +/- 0.25	1.3x
    asm.js (Firefox Nightly)	5.12 +/- 0.59	1.9x
NaCl is 30% slower, asm.js is 90% slower.
niggler··on Box2d Revisited
Interesting that NaCl is far closer to native performance than asm.js. Can that performance gap be closed?
niggler··on The next generation of Instapaper
Digg was a brand acquisition (just for the name); Betaworks wasn't interested in the tech
niggler··on Quantitative Finance Reading List
It's been more than a year since anybody's purchased an app with zero revenue for $1B.

I should clarify that I don't think the bubble is over yet, but the euphoria stage has passed

niggler··on Quantitative Finance Reading List
Undoubtedly the best corporate finance book is Brealey and Myers (http://www.amazon.com/Principles-Corporate-Mcgraw-Hill-Insur...) -- amazon ranks it at #205890 versus #249565 for your proposal
niggler··on Quantitative Finance Reading List
I think most of the easy money in startups has been made (and from here on out the dumb ideas that raised millions of dollars won't see as much money), so people are jumping back to finance.

There was never a real exodus of talent. The really talented people weathered the storm, and it seemed as if a whole bunch of B-people switched over and are now considering switching back.

niggler··on Quantitative Finance Reading List
Garbage. Many hedge funds only require a BS from a top school. Others, of course, are only looking for PhDs. These exams and certificates, IMHO, are money-making machines (if you need those certs for your job -- like Series exams -- your firm will sponsor it)
niggler··on Layoffs at EA Today
Is this due to some projects nearing completion (like what we saw with Activision when they finished Diablo III) or are there deeper problems afoot?
niggler··on Quantitative Finance Reading List
I always recommend "Trading and Exchanges" by Larry Harris. If you want a slower mathematical introduction, I recommend the Stochastic Calculus for Finance books by Steven Shreve.
