niels··on Ask HN: Any other readers Not working in a web-based start-up?
Sounds cool. Fellow FPV'er here. I think this hobby will explode in popularity really soon, if that isn't already happening.
niels··on Let's make GitHub better, together
So apparently this is the new standard in job applications.
niels··on Google acquires BufferBox (YC S12)
I don't know how I should have framed my reply. Just wanted to point out that in some places these boxes are already quite common.
niels··on Google acquires BufferBox (YC S12)
It's not a new idea. We've had them running in my country (Denmark) for the last five years at least. They are everywhere.
niels··on Robot Dragonfly
In the FPV community it's not uncommon to get +1 hour flying times. But the planes are of course bigger than the dragonfly. The battery types used is Lithium polymer battery. Some people add solar cells on their plane to extend their flying times. This guy uses a combination of a glider and solar cells to fly for +5 hours http://fpvlab.com/forums/showthread.php?8311-New-round-trip-...
niels··on Things I wish I knew about MongoDB a year ago
You can't query the json type as easily in postgres. I would guess that is an important use case.
niels··on Introducing the Redesigned Bitbucket
Well, the fact that Bitbucket didn't support Git until half a year ago, probably explains it.
niels··on Do you really want to be making this much money when you're 50?
I'm a software developer (MS Comp. Sci.) in my late thirties. I've always had the impression that software development was really well paid. But lately many of my friends (doctors, lawyers, MBAs) has started to make way more than I can get as a regular employee. And for the doctors it's all part of their standard salaries. They don't need to demonstrate any particular high level of competence. And from here on their salary will increase until retirement, while I expect mine to flatten or decrease. I love programming and didn't choose it for the money, but my view on software as a high paying job has changed. Of course everything is relative.
niels··on Robotic Airplane Flies In Tight Spaces
On a sidenote I'd like to add that rc flying is a ton of fun. Especially if you couple it with FPV (first person view) cams, goggles etc...
niels··on Show HN: Invalidate browser cache of Django static files automatically
The difference is this just appends the hash to the url, the builtin actually saves the static file with the hash in the file name.
niels··on Google Chrome Web Lab is now live in beta.
Works fine for me in Chrome 20 and 22 on OS X.
niels··on Single page apps in depth (new free book)
I'd say databinding is useful for smaller convenience plugins, not for the architecture of larger JavaScript applications. From my quick skim this book is spot on.
niels··on We just launched Beluga, a free analytics tool for musicians
Grooveshark is blocked (at the DNS level) in my country (Denmark). Annoying.
niels··on Swiftype (YC W12) Builds Site Search That Doesn’t Suck
If it's not to late, I would move the embed script to a subdomain so you can host the script from where ever you like (cdn or other host).
niels··on The Dawn of Haiku OS
I remember trying BeOS back in the days. It had a nifty feature where you could download an executable and install directly from inside windows, and then boot up in BeOS afterwards. I used to hang out at OSNews where OpenBeOS was heavily promoted and discussed when they started the project. Sure is a long time ago.
niels··on How to cope with the Gmail redesign
This reminds me of when people complained about the new facebook design.
niels··on Ep.io is closing down, recommending Heroku
Sad to see them go. We were hosted with them and really liked their service. Good luck to Andrew and Ben.
niels··on Evolution of a Web Developer: From PHP Newbie To Python Ninja
Step 152: "And then I switched to using the Java platform entirely, because there are things I am doing that are much more easily expressible in some of the JVM languages (not Java)."
niels··on Sad, Tired, and Alone: My Ongoing Battle With Startup Depression
If you have a depression you need help. Talk to your doctor, and don't dismiss the assistance of drugs. Also exercising is known to help against depression.
niels··on Real World Ocaml announced
Simcorp is another OCaml financial software shop.
niels··on The Freedom and Perils of Living Alone
I am an introvert. When I moved in with my girlfriend, it was really difficult, because she couldn't understand I need some time alone, just using the laptop, tablet... But now we have both adapted to each others needs, and it works out pretty well. The biggest change for me is that I am now an early riser. Never was before for longer periods of time.
niels··on Why Online Dating (Still) Sucks, and a Simple Attempt at Fixing It
None of them are superficial. Get over it.
niels··on Why Python is Important for You
To be honest I don't have enough experience with lazily evaluated languages to be concerned about it yet.
niels··on Why Python is Important for You
Just to be clear, Python is strongly typed but not statically typed. But I definitively agree with your comment. The startup I'm working for is Python based, but I'm currently learning Haskell, because I'd like to take advantage of a good type system for my larger efforts.
niels··on I am a great programmer, but horrible algorithmist
Yep, I'm exactly like you. I also have a CS degree, but after many years of doing web dev. I feel stupid. I have recently started buying books that teaches algorithmics in a more easy approach.

I am currently reading "Python Algorithms: Mastering Basic Algorithms in the Python Language". I can't recommend it enough. Besides clearly explaining the basics, it helps you learn how to think about transforming naive solutions in to efficient algoritms.

Besides that, I find it fun to practice on code tests provided by codility, interviewstreet etc.

niels··on You Only Wish MongoDB Wasn't Relational
This is exactly how we do it at my company.
niels··on Bootstrap 2.0, From Twitter
They don't use <i> anymore. They use class icon.
niels··on Backbone 0.9.0 released
Awesome that events hash now takes a function. I've needed that for a while, and should really get in the habit of submitting patches instead of waiting for others to do the work.
niels··on Testing Backbone.js Best Practices
In my opinion BDD has some extra overhead (that can be useful in the right scenarios). BDD is best suited when you have specs and external stakeholders. We don't have that in my company / startup.
niels··on Testing Backbone.js Best Practices
We use QUnit, with sinon.js for stubs and fake server at my company. We didn't want to use BDD.
