nickpeterson··on Why F#?
I’ll add that features isn’t really a constructive way to think about the differences between C# and F#. C# has more ‘features’ than most other programming languages. One of the core features of F# is less features and churn. Also, I really appreciate the way F# maintainers agonize over how to maintain the language and keep it coherent. You don’t get the feel they’re chasing features at all.
nickpeterson··on Why F#?
Because it’s great, and people that think otherwise are dead to me.

Maybe they’ll switch their next operation to iMessage.

Can’t wait to see those Memojis issuing kill orders.

nickpeterson··on How each pillar of the First Amendment is under attack
I don’t have a ton of faith in scotus right now, but I think they understand their only power is in whether people consider them independent. Allowing a third term for Trump would be accepting that they’re basically in charge of parking tickets.
nickpeterson··on 2025 Tariff Impacts at Puget Systems
If someone had asked me 2 years ago how long it would take China to overtake the US in world power, I'd have guessed 20 years, now I'd guess 2 years.
nickpeterson··on NATS Server v2.11
I’d love something in between “knowing a subset of the subject” and reading all the values. But, now that I think about it, nats lets me subscribe to kv changes so I could incrementally maintain some index and retrieve the keys from that…
nickpeterson··on NATS Server v2.11
I've recently been really trying to get up to speed on NATS. It would be great if JetStream had some degree of querying.
nickpeterson··on Iconography of the PuTTY tools
You should work on a new and improved filesystem implementation and name the project 'New Folder'.
nickpeterson··on 3dfx: So powerful, it's kind of ridiculous (2023)
My first gpu ever was a voodoo 2 8mb. I remember starting up the original unreal and getting it working. Shortly after we got a cable modem. 12 year old me was having a total blast. ;)
nickpeterson··on Zelensky leaves White House after angry meeting
I think this take only makes sense if there is no such thing as morally or justice. If we were just discussing a business deal, fine, but Ukrainians are being killed and told to be nicer to the killer’s leader. It’s an insane position.

You don’t get big corporate donations to your superpac by trying to bust up monopolies.

When they promised to lower the price of everything I guess they also meant murder.

What about the Project 2025 plan to force all government servers to run red hat linux?
nickpeterson··on US government struggles to rehire nuclear safety staff it laid off days ago
Whom does income tax cuts help? Median US salary is 62k. That person pays ~12k in income taxes. Conservatives are going to ‘save’ that person 1k on their taxes or some other paltry sum and then cancel a bunch of services, fire a few hundred thousand workers, and raise tariffs to make the actual cost go up on everything that person buys.
nickpeterson··on US government struggles to rehire nuclear safety staff it laid off days ago
These firings will have no impact on your taxes. Instead of people having a job, the money will just get given to oligarchs and you’ll pay largely the same taxes but have moderately less government services. Socialism is needed to some degree for society to function. Capitalism alone is an awful system.
nickpeterson··on US government struggles to rehire nuclear safety staff it laid off days ago
It’s like blood letting, but less effective.
nickpeterson··on JPMorgan CEO: "I don't care how many people sign that f—ing [WFH] Petition"
I think a hostile work environment might be a fun outcome of ‘return to office’ mandates.
nickpeterson··on JPMorgan CEO: "I don't care how many people sign that f—ing [WFH] Petition"
This is kind of true, but it depends on risking your financial stability in the short term. Better to get a bunch of IT workers on board and then strike. What are they going to do, not have IT? they’d be out of business in a month.

Good luck hiring scabs when they don’t have the passwords…

nickpeterson··on BYD to offer Tesla-like self-driving tech in all models for free
The problem in the US is that outlets run at 120v and an overnight charge is closer to 30-40 miles of range assuming 12amp on a 15amp circuit.

In countries with most outlets at 220v it’s probably easier, plus usually less long distance driving than the US.

Obviously if you put a 240v, 50amp outlet in a garage you can ignore everything I just wrote.

nickpeterson··on Surnames from nicknames nobody has any more
Embarrassing how little of this I knew, especially with my username.
nickpeterson··on Software development topics I've changed my mind on
I think trying to fit everything into the same lens is usually the real problem. Functional programming is a great methodology for a lot of things, but there are many ways to design things. Chances are really good that something elegantly written in prolog won't be as elegant in scheme or java, and vice versa.
nickpeterson··on Software development topics I've changed my mind on
I could definitely see how if you work in Java or C# all day, repls feel like a neat curiosity. Picture telling someone who writes scheme in emacs that repls aren't a good design tool.

If you want to argue the point with non lisp people, I'd go to javascript or SQL as great examples where you really use repl's quite a bit.

nickpeterson··on Nokia's internal presentation after iPhone was launched (2007) [pdf]
I think even when companies project arrogance from their c-suite, it’s more to keep the market happy and calm nerves. I’d be shocked if RIM wasn’t also sweating bullets internally after that iPhone presentation. They weren’t morons, and saw what happened with iPods.
nickpeterson··on Intel shareholders file case asking ex CEO, CFO to return 3 years of salary
I think software optimizations are going to heavily impact gpu/ai-accelerator demand. It feels like we’re leaving the ‘brute force’ make it work era and entering the ‘make it work on my phone without killing battery life” era. I wouldn’t be shocked if within a few years there just isn’t the need for custom hardware at all.
nickpeterson··on Java in the Small
I remember being 10 and going to a computer lab full of power macintoshes and playing sim city 2000, kid pix, and Carmen San Diego. This was in between looking at a cd encyclopedia (encarta?), old computers were awesome ;)
nickpeterson··on Palm’s CEO emails Steve Jobs (2007)
I think the critical miss of that era was Research in motion not buying palm. I think that combination could have had a real shot of staying relevant. Rim basically already made hardware that would have worked and had tons of corporate support because of blackberry messenger. The patents between the two would have also been quite strong.
nickpeterson··on In Defense of Y'All
I’m a Pittsburgher who moved to Indianapolis when I was 7. I remember encountering the word y’all and thinking, “oh they just mean yinz.” I wonder if someone came from an area where neither are common, if the first encounter is more jarring?
nickpeterson··on Playing video games boosts IQ in children
Most newer games are just weird forms of social media (Roblox), so I kind of doubt it improves intelligence…
