nicgrev103··on TV series about startup failures
If we are talking just general business movies, some more are: 'The Big Short', 'Wolf of Wall Street'.
nicgrev103··on TV series about startup failures
'Billion dollar code' is another good one, not so much about a fall though.
nicgrev103··on TV series about startup failures
I guess I meant all the other suggestions documented failures or at least 'falls'. Spotify may not make money but it is still running and hasn't suffered a fall to the same extent as the other real life examples.
nicgrev103··on TV series about startup failures
'Halt and Catch Fire' (Fictional but good) 'Sillicon Valley' (Fictional and comedy but also good) 'The Playlist' (About Spotify, which isn't failure)
nicgrev103··on Americans lost a record $10.3B to online scammers last year, FBI says
Yeah, I think there would be a thin line to tread between being helpful and informative and being scammy. I would not want to actually go through with the scam and soliciting donations as an unknown orginisation seems spammy/scammy. I think it would probably be better to charge people to attempt to scam people they think may be vulnerable or themselves.
nicgrev103··on Americans lost a record $10.3B to online scammers last year, FBI says
Yeah 100%, the family members could give contact info for those they think are vulnerable and you can as you say 'pen test' them.

I thought about setting up a foundation that mock scams people as a form of scam education after my wife was scammed in a classic tax text scam. Thoughts?
nicgrev103··on Watermark Remover (AI Powered)
Tried it with a basic placeit mockup and it was awful.

I think if the background was removed it would be harder.
nicgrev103··on Building an e-ink weather display for our home
Really cool. I wanted to make an 3-4 inch NFC eink screen for my phone so I can read books on the go without an e reader. Anyone got expreince that could help out?
nicgrev103··on Being Ridiculed for My Open Source Project (2013)
Haters gonna hate. I feel like this has got better over the past few years but there was certainly a culture where being nasty online was acceptable. When I was a teenager I was playing around with web design and posted the finished design on a facebook group. I got the exact same response 'this made my eyes bleed'. Certainly knocked confidence but ultimately it says more about those people that their lives are so sad they have to put others down to feel better themselves. Classic bully stuff.
nicgrev103··on Tell HN: A Demo Day without the investors
Love it. Great for there to be something for people who want to pitch but aren't looking for investment.
nicgrev103··on What We’ve Lost Playing the Lottery
People pay for a lottery ticket to dream about what their life could be like if they won (similar to people who never launch that buiness idea). Many people derive a lot of happiness from this, moreover (in the uk) a large proportion of the takings goes to good causes and people generally accept it is extremely unlikely they will win but instead of just donating to charity they at least have a slim chance of a massive gain.

nicgrev103··on An ‘everything app’ would be bad for liberal democracies and free markets
True, however, even then the initail focus was very spesific: Make a reuasable rocket. An everything app does a range of very different things like ride hailing, food delivery, cash transfer, chat, etc etc.
nicgrev103··on An ‘everything app’ would be bad for liberal democracies and free markets
I really don't get the value proposition. Isn't it startup 101 that you should not try to boil the ocean and be the everything of everything for everyone.
nicgrev103··on Stripe is PayPal circa 2010
I mainly use stripe because they have significantly lower transaction fees. 1.4% +20p vs 2.9% +30p UK
nicgrev103··on Our domain and 700 non-profit sites got blocked by Meta
Negative, as with all legal action it took months and by then the graduations were long past.
nicgrev103··on Our domain and 700 non-profit sites got blocked by Meta
Similar experience

I used to run a graduation photography company, we did professional graduation photos half the price of the 'officail' providers (who pay a huge commission to the university, but don't get me started on that).

We promoted our service with facebook events and advertised said events. One year without warning or explination they Facebook just deleted all our events (we would travel from one uni to another over the summer). I frantically tried to get a response from facebook. I never got one.

I sued in small claims court and they settled the case (not before being very threatening through high paid lawyers and trying to dodge the case altogether) they never did explain what had happend or why.

Ultimately it's partly the reason I shut the company down, facebook was our channel, without certainty we could host events and promote them it made no business sense to invest in the company.

nicgrev103··on How fateful?
I hope you two never break up. Put this level of ability, rescources, time and effort into revenge and the results will not be pretty.
nicgrev103··on Ask HN: What's up with these DoorDash dark patterns?
I've had a few. The most similar was uber eats, they constantly have a promotion on. One such was get £15 off your next order via email. I clicked through and ordered only to find no discount was applied. When I qestioned it they said some bullshit like the offer was only valid for the first 100 customers. Needless to say I am never odering through them again.

I had another one when travelling. I used skyscanner (flight comparison site), the cheapest flight took me through what must have been 3 forms and 30+ questions taking several mins to fill out. When you get to check out they say the price has now increased since you started the checkout (incuding fury and panic) and suggesting you accept the increase before the price goes up again! I quickly did a new comparison and funily enough the first price was still being shown on the comparison site. I opted for the second cheapest option and no such last min price increase was administered and I thought i'd doged a bullet. Sadly not, when I got to the airport to return home I found that the agent I had gone with had not booked my luggage on the retun flight, que a £50 surcharge to get it on last min. I am still trying to get my money back from them and the flight was in April. Unfortunately the comparison site model has encoraged agents to 'show' the lowest price at apparently any cost - some up the price last min others book your luggage only one way.

This is not limited to tech or internet companies. I found a worrying and annoying dark pattern in jewllery. Many companies use their own measurement lettering systems and there is a surprisingly large varience between companies, so you think your wife is size x and you order the ring but it turns out to be a different size which means you have to send it back to be resized (for a fee of course) and they know that you won't quibble because you don't want to look cheap in front of your partner for what is probably an emotionally driven purchase.

Compaines are literally in the business of extracting as much money from you as they can for the least resistance, so unfortunately unless people write reviews or share their expereinces it's business as usual.

nicgrev103··on Electric seagliders could enable short-haul emissions-free air travel
"Perhaps the most important factor, though, is that because WIGs are not classed as aircraft the regulations that govern them are far less onerous. That means that they don’t need to carry the kind of backup power that an aircraft would need for emergency landings, and they don’t need to be flown by trained airline pilots."

Just what every passenger wants to hear haha

They say this is a solution for the fact electric airplanes are going to only be able to hop between cities and then says how this can only go 180 miles with 12 passengers, hardly a long distance, oh and it has to be across a body of water... and the water can't be too rough... sounds like a great solution!

nicgrev103··on The Mathematics of Escalators on the London Underground (2013) [pdf]
'Stand on the right' is relative to which way you are facing. You would still be correctly following the instruction if you are facing opposite to the direction of travel and standing in the way of 'walkers' (on your right). I find Londoners generally receive this sort of humour very poorly ;)
nicgrev103··on The death of 'mandatory fun' in the office
Everyone turning their backs on the office bday party... everyone but Boris Johnson during covid lockdown!
nicgrev103··on The death of 'mandatory fun' in the office
My boss recently had a birthday party where he invited us to come and pay for our own pizza at a place of his choosing. He invited his wife and baby but no one else was allowed to bring partners. It was made out like it was optional but when I didn't respond to the invite he singled me out and I was the only one not going. Didn't feel like I had a choice really.

Please do post your full experience, I'd be interested. I saw an article this morning and it spurred me to buy some smart plugs to cut power overnight to standby devices (https://www.telegraph.co.uk/bills-and-utilities/gas-electric...)
