niceairport··on Study reveals new details on what happened in the first microsecond of Big Bang
It isn't a complete model, but it's the best one we've got and the most universally agreed upon.
niceairport··on Study reveals new details on what happened in the first microsecond of Big Bang
I know you're joking, but "before" the Big Bang doesn't really make sense.
niceairport··on Voyager 1 hears the hush of interstellar plasma
I can't say I'm surprised, but it's still pretty crazy to think about that it took us 44 years to get an object to a place it takes light less than 24 hours to get to. It feels both pretty far and also not far at all at the same time.

Curious as to how long does it take for the transmission to reach earth. Where can I learn that?
niceairport··on Ask HN: How can I read faster?
It doesn't seem to work when I paste text. After pasting text into the modal and submitting it prompts me to enter Wavenet API key.
niceairport··on The handshake emoji is more complicated than you might think
Ah yes, the Simpsons, the source of truth for all things life.
niceairport··on What3Words sends legal threat to security researcher for sharing an alternative
At least the delusion is very real here.
niceairport··on CEOs are hugely expensive – why not automate them?
I have mixed feelings between your response and the response you are replying to. One one hand I can clearly see how what you're saying makes sense. On the other, I still am inclined to believe that if you really distilled the actual purpose of everything you mentioned, it could be formulated in a way that doesn't require AGI.
niceairport··on The culture war is killing us [video]
You've explained further proving that the original statement was wrong. Nobody is shooting at anyone.
niceairport··on SQLite the only database you will ever need in most cases
I think this is a bit of a case of "Why use many word when few word do trick?"
niceairport··on DevSkiller IT skills report 2021: Demand and hiring trends
I've had the pleasure of working with an Australian consulting firm - Industrie & Co.

Great people and great experience overall.

niceairport··on “It's Not Cancel Culture – It's a Platform Failure.”
I mean to be fair, the opinion expressed in the tweet in question was pretty dumb.
niceairport··on Rust, not Firefox, is Mozilla's greatest industry contribution
This. I was so sad to find out that despite having a phenomenal CSS support, FF does not (easily) allow to switch off CORS, which makes it impossible for me to use at work.
niceairport··on Conversations at Home ‘Stirring Up Hatred’ Now a Criminal Offence in Scotland
"The point is that you start to think how your words could be taken, not just assume people magically know your intent"

But where do you draw the line? Is it not reasonable to assume that the intent will be understood when using and extremely common phrase?

niceairport··on Conversations at Home ‘Stirring Up Hatred’ Now a Criminal Offence in Scotland
I mean your point is fair enough. But I must say that if someone is going to go to the trouble of deconstructing every sentence in search of something to be hurt by then I'm sure they can. Question is though, what's the point of it, when it is pretty clear that it was not the intended meaning? Because obviously in this example it was just used as a metaphore without any insidious meaning behind it. Not unlike the use of master in git or white/ black list, that I've seen discussed in HN a few times in the past months.
niceairport··on HSBC bans customers from buying Bitcoin-backer MicroStrategy shares
That's true. Maybe something to do with regulations then? HSBC is already being accused of being involved with money laundering quite a lot. Also, what other coins except BTC have market cap >1T?
niceairport··on HSBC bans customers from buying Bitcoin-backer MicroStrategy shares
Maybe they have issues with people taking on a margin that they cannot afford? Cryptocurrencies being as volatile as they are shorting them on a margin can result in high losses that HSBC prefers not to be involved with? Just a guess.
niceairport··on Conversations at Home ‘Stirring Up Hatred’ Now a Criminal Offence in Scotland
Thank you for adding that /s at the end. Nowadays it really wouldn't surprise me to see something like this written seriously.
niceairport··on Conversations at Home ‘Stirring Up Hatred’ Now a Criminal Offence in Scotland
Unfortunately, I think this is where it's headed and it doesn't look like there's a whole lot we can do. People ignored it years ago when they thought it would only be localised to liberal university circles in the US. Now those people are out in the world and there's little we can do to stop the spread of this witch hunt.
niceairport··on Why do long options start with two dashes? (2019)
Or just think about all options as being prefixed with a "-"
niceairport··on Jeff Bezos comes out in support of increased corporate taxes
For example you can calculate how many percent of their revenue a company made in a given country and then how much tax they paid there and demand them to pay the difference.
niceairport··on Show HN: Anon – Create anonymous, self-deleting blog posts
Maybe, once a post has been created you could show a message stating exact datetime on which the post will be deleted?
niceairport··on How much can a Clojure developer do alone?
My guess would be it largely depends on the devs in question. I also feel like this is true regardless of language.
niceairport··on React and D3.js
While I agree that it looks sleek, it also made my 2019 MBP lag slightly on load, which... just shouldn't happen.
niceairport··on Is that ship still stuck?
One, I suppose.
niceairport··on Show HN: Programmer’s Poop NFT
"Is this real or parody?"

I feel like in 2021 it doesn't even matter anymore.

niceairport··on Multiple US Navy destroyers swarmed by mysterious 'drones' off California coast
The vast majority of global civilian population doesn't have access to firearms.
niceairport··on Ask HN: How do I improve boring README page?
I think README's purpose isn't to be entertaining. As such, I really don't see an issue with the linked README.
niceairport··on Why Channel 37 Doesn’t Exist
Vice has always been hit and miss for me. On one hand you have some really well produced documentaries, such as Hamilton's Pharmacopeia, the great reports on Ukrainian Protests or Xinjiang camps.

On the other hand you have stuff like this: https://www.vice.com/en/article/gy8pxm/gluten-free-people-ar...
