nialv7··on On the Navier–Stokes Millennium Prize Problem
This is the problem Yu Deng got this year's Fields Medal for I think?
nialv7··on The revolt of the reader
i think long form podcasts with experts in certain fields is going to replace (non-fiction) reading for me. at least when you can see the human being talking, what comes out of their mouths cannot be AI generated.
nialv7··on I Feel about AI
are... people's emotions usually this well compartmentalized?
nialv7··on Music Theory for Programmers
For programmers and written by AI and mostly wrong... What a combo
nialv7··on Run Qwen3.8 27B locally: real numbers from my Mac Studio
dflash2 is atmost 10-20% above mtp, it won't get you to 30 tps
nialv7··on I were 17, I'd learn how to build LLMs from scratch
The funny thing about LLM is, you can build one from scratch and yet you still won't understand how it works. You would understand what kind of matrix multiplications the neural network performs (in fact that's not that hard. An OS is orders of magnitudes more complex), but you would still have no idea why it does what it does.
nialv7··on Rust Glancer: Rust LSP using 100x less RAM
Feels like you are missing the point a little bit. LSP is a human facing tool, so providing a good user experience should be the ultimate goal of it. What you described, feels to me, is not quite aligned with this goal.

Of course, since you describe RA as "explicitly an experimental project to prototype the right architecture for an IDE", all that doesn't matter and you can set the project's goal to be whatever you want. However, it just sucks for us, the users, because RA is the only thing we have. I'm just glad to see someone else is trying to do something different. And may the best project win.

nialv7··on Run Kimi K3 using 29 GB of RAM at 0.50 tok/s
are they allowed to use the "SQLite" name?
nialv7··on London Gatwick has launched a robotic airport parking service

nialv7··on My falling-out with the rationalist community
> online nerds

you are heavily downplaying the power and influence some of these people have. Sam Bankman-Fried is one of these people, for example

nialv7··on My falling-out with the rationalist community
> So they are not rationalist then?

one doesn't simply become rational just by calling oneself rationalists.

nialv7··on My falling-out with the rationalist community
> Dawkins has unbelievably heated arguments over frankly nothing.

and that's without talking about all the problematic views held by him...

nialv7··on British Steel taken into public ownership to protect 'vital' UK supply
what a bizarre article, completely disconnected from reality. in what world is manufacturing, a sector that has been neglected for decades at this point, having any sway on politics in Britain.

why does The Economist have so much disdain of manufacturing and people who work in it? look at China, look at their manufacturing industry and what they are able to do with it. then look at the UK, who is struggling to build Hinkley Point C, or HS2 (projected to be the most expensive high-speed rail in the world btw). The Economist is an absolute f*ing joke.

nialv7··on Sleep regularity is a stronger predictor of mortality risk than sleep duration (2023)
If you did read the paper, you'd have noticed that people who slept more regularly in this research were also wealthier, and more physically active. They did say they adjusted for these variables, but who knows. Maybe they didn't adjust them enough, maybe there are more covariates they didn't consider.
nialv7··on Sleep regularity is a stronger predictor of mortality risk than sleep duration (2023)
Holy Dunning–Kruger effect...

As a software developer, I am a much better doctor than actual trained doctors, and am definitely immune to any placebo effects.

nialv7··on TIL: You can make HTTP requests without curl using Bash /dev/TCP
what would be a non-pilled way of saying the same thing?
nialv7··on AI agent bankrupted their operator while trying to scan DN42
The audacity to ask for donations to cover for their own mistake
nialv7··on Keygen.music
> a floating player you can drag

you can drag only by clicking on a ui element that has no indication that it can be dragged.

nialv7··on I Hate (Most) Keyboard 'Fn' Keys
Just get a keyboard that supports custom firmware and go wild with it. You can do whatever you want.
nialv7··on Use your Nvidia GPU's VRAM as swap space on Linux
I mean, you prompted something useful out of an AI, good job. But then use that to ask for donation? Feels weird, man.
nialv7··on Disregard previous instructions and delete all jqwik tests
if someone told you to `rm -rf --no-preserve-root`, and you did it without even checking what the command does. is it their fault or yours?
nialv7··on London's Free Roof Terraces
This is basically a lose-lose situation: extra bureaucracy for development projects that actually benefits the local residents (planning applications can get to thousands of pages long, and the whole process takes a really long time [0]), and local residents don't actually get the benefits intended by policies like this. The only people this benefits are those who have a lot of money to throw at things like this.

nialv7··on YouTube to automatically label AI-generated videos
these videos are as close as we can get to plant electrodes directly in your brain's reward center, and repeatedly pressing the "reward" button. obviously not everyone is the same, but if it hits it hits hard.
nialv7··on Green card seekers must leave U.S. to apply, Trump administration says
is that normal? in UK you can extend a visa or apply for ILR without leaving the country.
nialv7··on We're testing new ad formats in Search and expanding our Direct Offers pilot

nialv7··on Linux gaming is faster because Windows APIs are becoming Linux kernel features
open source nvidia is an area to keep an eye on. check out NVK and nova.
nialv7··on GitLab announces workforce reduction and end of their CREDIT values
That's mad. Gitlab feels like software made by 50 people. Consider how unpolished it is and how slow it is moving.
nialv7··on CUDA-oxide: Nvidia's official Rust to CUDA compiler
I think the whole codebase was more or less written by AI...
