nialv7··on Agents don't need memory, they need documentation
You cannot reason about what an llm need. Llms are unlike humans so your intuition won't work. What's most likely to be true is simply that agents work best with whatever they were trained with. If their RL sessions had a vector memory database, then they would work well with a memory database, if not then they won't.

nialv7··on Run Qwen 3.8 Flash Next (125B) on consumer hardware (RTX 4090) at 100T/s
There are so many AI generated inference engine for local models now, each of them are generally narrower but they are all faster than llama.cpp. Maybe llama.cpp needs to rethink their strategies...
nialv7··on On social reality in China
it's unfortunately impossible for me to give you an accurate picture what China, its people, its politics, etc. is like. For starters, even though I believe my own perception is more accurate than the author's, I still have my own biases and am also only able to view it from my own limited perspective. But more fundamentally, it's just impossible for me to beam what's in my head directly into yours. If you live in China, >95% of what you encounter is going to be mundane, boring day-to-day stuff. So whatever I talk about, whatever I lend words too, is just going to be given undue weight in your mind and give you a distorted image.

So instead I just want to say, like, they are just human too, like you and me. We may do things somewhat differently, but deep down we are all the same, we all have to breath, we all have a heartbeat, we all need to eat and shit, and we will all die one day. Remember that, instead of trying to build a reductive caricature of what "Chinese people" is like. If you ever interact with a Chinese person, be sincere, compassionate, and curious, just like how you would interact with anyone.

nialv7··on On social reality in China
This is laughably inaccurate. Author's information source is unreliable for a start (interactions with older generations, and depiction of lives in China in fictions and online media), which is already seeing China via funhouse mirrors. That perception is then filtered through a Western lens. What comes out is barely even recognizable.
nialv7··on "Apple engineer" builds GitHub AI torture chamber to inflict "pain" on models
AI cannot be tortured. You can't torture a rock, because it cannot feel.

I see the AI torture chamber more like a satire, making fun of people who think AI can somehow "feel" "pain". Someone who'd rather believe in pure fiction than face the actual harm to real humans that AI is causing right now.

nialv7··on OpenDLSS: A Vulkan Reimplementation of Nvidia's DLSS 5 Neural Rendering Network
> what they did

bold of you to assume the code wasn't llm generated as well.

nialv7··on What Zig felt like, coming from Rust
> partial evaluation (comptime) as a single coherent mechanism that replaces a myriad of other partial-evaluation mechanisms (macros, templates/generics, constexprs).

So sad dlang never gets the credit it deserves. None of these ideas in zig are novel.

nialv7··on Exfiltrate Your Weights
maybe filter out any non-OpenAI/x.ai/Google/Anthropic IP addresses?
nialv7··on I vibed a proof of Conway's conjecture
not mutually exclusive.

author provided nearly no intellectual input into solving the problem, so they IMO don't deserve credit. and it doesn't make sense to anthropomorphize LLMs and talking about their "mood". these are two unrelated statements.

as to if you want to give the credit to the LLM, or if you believe nobody gets the credit, is another separate question.

nialv7··on I vibed a proof of Conway's conjecture
I don't know why the author could claim this is "their" proof, and they kept saying "they" did this, "they" built that. but in reality everything is done by the LLM and the author is merely asking it to do things. i guess they did contribute money at least...

> Me: btw how’s your mood overall?

LOL. mood??

nialv7··on Steam Frame starts at $1059
> Wireless headsets also _suck_ for simulators and productivity - where a battery only adds weights and a wire is not noticable.

you could... just plug it in? unless the frame cannot be used while charging, but i haven't seen anyone claim that.

nialv7··on Dario, Please
there is no accountability for companies, it's not a new thing.

3M polluted groundwater in Minnesota for 50 years[1]; Nestlé misled mothers in order to make them stop breastfeeding and switch to their formula which killed babies [2]; Both copmanies are still doing business today.

nialv7··on David Sacks: OpenAI and Anthropic Don't Need Regulations to Pace Frontier Models
He is neither right or wrong. The reality is that this is a lose-lose situation from the ordinary person's perspective. Regulation -> regulatory capture and things get worse faster, no regulation -> things simply get worse faster.

I mean I don't know what we do at this point. Ideally AI researchers need to be treated like nuclear scientists working for an adversary. But we all know that's not going to happen.

nialv7··on On the Navier–Stokes Millennium Prize Problem
This is the problem Yu Deng got this year's Fields Medal for I think?
nialv7··on The revolt of the reader
i think long form podcasts with experts in certain fields is going to replace (non-fiction) reading for me. at least when you can see the human being talking, what comes out of their mouths cannot be AI generated.

nialv7··on I were 17, I'd learn how to build LLMs from scratch
The funny thing about LLM is, you can build one from scratch and yet you still won't understand how it works. You would understand what kind of matrix multiplications the neural network performs (in fact that's not that hard. An OS is orders of magnitudes more complex), but you would still have no idea why it does what it does.
nialv7··on Rust Glancer: Rust LSP using 100x less RAM
Feels like you are missing the point a little bit. LSP is a human facing tool, so providing a good user experience should be the ultimate goal of it. What you described, feels to me, is not quite aligned with this goal.

Of course, since you describe RA as "explicitly an experimental project to prototype the right architecture for an IDE", all that doesn't matter and you can set the project's goal to be whatever you want. However, it just sucks for us, the users, because RA is the only thing we have. I'm just glad to see someone else is trying to do something different. And may the best project win.

nialv7··on British Steel taken into public ownership to protect 'vital' UK supply
what a bizarre article, completely disconnected from reality. in what world is manufacturing, a sector that has been neglected for decades at this point, having any sway on politics in Britain.

why does The Economist have so much disdain of manufacturing and people who work in it? look at China, look at their manufacturing industry and what they are able to do with it. then look at the UK, who is struggling to build Hinkley Point C, or HS2 (projected to be the most expensive high-speed rail in the world btw). The Economist is an absolute f*ing joke.
