nhgiang··on Ask HN: What Are You Learning?
So cool!
nhgiang··on I spent 6 years writing complex, deep react code. then I couldn't get a job
Sorry to hear this. I don't think it's just you. The people laid off from FAANG might have flooded the market :/
nhgiang··on Microsoft has no shame: Bing spit on my ‘Chrome’ search with a fake AI answer
MS PR hard at work
nhgiang··on Ask HN: To senior developers,Is the art of software design being lost?
No. It simply isn't in the spotlight anymore. Same reason you don't hear about pottery much, but they still exist.
nhgiang··on Zivid – Oslo, Norway – Full-Time – Visa – Onsite – Software Engineer
Looks like your BambooHR account does not allow applications from personal email. Misconfiguration?

Sorry, but we’re having trouble signing you in.

AADSTS500200: User account <my email> is a personal Microsoft account. Personal Microsoft accounts are not supported for this application unless explicitly invited to an organization. Try signing out and signing back in with an organizational account.

nhgiang··on Ask HN: Able to code fluently a special trait?
This ain't /g/, anon
nhgiang··on Ask HN: Why is there no database with a functional query language?
Based on your comment about composability, I'm assuming that's what you actually meant by "functional"? Perhaps you want maps & folds over queries?
nhgiang··on [dead]
He literally mocked the hypothetical scenario, saying there are better things to do.
nhgiang··on Monica will soon launch a brand new version, codename Chandler
Chandler better make bad jokes every 5 min.
nhgiang··on Why Chinese Apps Are the Favorites of Young Americans
Could you show some examples of areas where China is leading?
nhgiang··on Ask HN: Does competitive programming make you a better programmer?
No, but it'll save you from failing tech interviews.

Before anyone say it, coding interviews are stupid, but having a proper job (at a proper company, with proper career paths) is not.

nhgiang··on Taichi lang: High-performance parallel programming in Python
New language developers really overestimate most people's willingness to learn new languages
nhgiang··on [dead]
Stone Free!
nhgiang··on Ask HN: Best language to use while learning Computer Science concepts?
What Rust can teach you and Python can't: - Memory management - Some functional, type-driven programming concepts (Python has functional programming facilities but not as many as Rust, although Rust isn't the most advanced functional language out there, either)

For other concepts, like you said, Python helps you focus on the concepts themselves better

nhgiang··on TCI encourages Google to do further headcount reductions [pdf]
Is TCI a major investor in Alphabet and why would they publish this (is it a legal requirement)?
nhgiang··on What strings does this regex matches? (a|b)
(b)(aaa...)

Each char can be an a or b, then repeat, not "a repeating seq of either a or b only"

(a|b)* = X* = x1x2x3... where each xi can be "a" or "b"

nhgiang··on Ask HN: Advice for a commercial SWE moving into scientific SWE
Could you elaborate? Was it a lack of good practices (source control, staging, testing, etc.) or sth else?

I was mid-senior when I changed to a research SWE job. Might be able to offer some insight on some specific problems.

But in general, each place has its own expectation about code quality and process. One of the most important skill for a SWE is to not expect anything when joining a new place, but adapt to that place's way of working instead.

nhgiang··on B+ Trees Visualization
Why not post the original URL?? https://www.cs.usfca.edu/~galles/visualization/

What is this dichchankinh.com domain?

nhgiang··on Ask HN: Do you see there being a future job role for generating AI prompts?
Probably both. It'll be the new programming. There'll be both super and average prompt engineers/devs.

At first, only a few talented people can do this. Then as the tools they develop get better, the job will be more accessible.

nhgiang··on Ask HN: Do I have “imposters syndrome” or am I just bad?
Ask if someone in your team could pair program with you. This is 100% the fastest way to get up-to-speed in large codebases
nhgiang··on Ask HN: What did Linux not do right?
I thought that was a good idea? Why isn't it so? What should be the alternative?
nhgiang··on A number theory problem where pi appears surprisingly
OP created an account 3 days ago to ask a question and Terry Tao answered. Must be an awesome feeling.
nhgiang··on Ask HN: How would one start doing TDD “properly”?
Look up property-based testing, too. It helps you forget about coming up with specific test values and edge cases.

The Hypothesis library for Python has a pretty good docs explaining property-based testing and how to use it.

nhgiang··on Ask HN: What is the job market like for niche languages (Nim, Crystal)?
There is a significant Erlang/Elixir job market in Europe and UK.
nhgiang··on Ask HN: What jobs in IT/Development are the most open to self learner?
I recommend apply a lot, because you never know, but preface/make it clear with every one of them that you are a self-learner. The key point is that you don't show them you're insecure about it.

Finding niche areas such as Rust, Haskell, Clojure, Elixir, Julia, C/C++ would maximize your chances because the mainstream language jobs will be swarmed with formally educated candidates.

nhgiang··on In fact, Rust structs are just Pascal records, at run time
So...I learned Rust in high school?
nhgiang··on Ask HN: Why is there no Django/Rails equivalent in JavaScript world?
I think it's simply that (and this is from my memory only):

Node.js was THE first back-end JS thing, and its "micro" philosophy kind of set the precedent for everything else that follow in that space. It was the time when people started to feel Django/Rails are cumbersome for some of their needs, too, so the MVC approach never caught on for JS devs.

So I think it's just popularity. Pick whatever tool you deem suitable!

nhgiang··on Ask HN: Best CS learning material for self-taught programmer?

nhgiang··on [dead]
Maybe it's because you don't know how to hide your entitlement.
nhgiang··on Ask HN: How to Keep Two Jobs?
> I'm feeling a bit guilty

Don't shoot yourself in the foot. The moment you let job#1's managers know about job#2, you will only have a part-time job left
