nhebb··on “Insanity Is Doing the Same Thing and Expecting Different Results”
Well, whom ever coined the phrase, they obviously never got a disc read error on a PS2.
nhebb··on I'm making 30 VR projects in 30 days to learn
I like that except that when learning something it's hard to know in advance how many days it will take. Instead, you could substitute key pieces of functionality for days.
nhebb··on Night-time in America's small towns
They remind me of screen caps from someone's Fallout 4 mod. They're nice to look at, but at the same time they do look over-manipulated and fake.
nhebb··on A list of movies about hacking
Dot was a pretty good comedy that didn't get enough attention: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0371647/

It's on Vimeo: https://vimeo.com/8919323

nhebb··on Don’t Take My Folders Away: Organizing Personal Info to Get Things Done (2005)
I think of search as a default functionality (although it was actually pretty bad in older versions of Outlook). But from a usability standpoint, software shouldn't pigeonhole users into one method or another. Since everyone's work flow is different, it's all about providing users flexibility.
nhebb··on Don’t Take My Folders Away: Organizing Personal Info to Get Things Done (2005)
The ability to organize email into folders is one of the main reasons I prefer Outlook over GMail. But as the paper mentions, "Folders can obscure as well as organize", which is where tags come in handy. What I would really like - for both email and files - is the ability to create both folders and tags quickly.
nhebb··on Brexit: MPs overwhelmingly back Article 50 bill
> This is something people are missing about the "alt-right" movement

The definition of "alt-right" has bifurcated. Originally, it meant non-GOP establishment (aka, GOPe), which is what I think you mean. The term was adopted by white nationalist groups, and that has been the primary definition used by the media.

nhebb··on A Story of a Fraudulent Coder
OK, I laughed at the Fiverr bit, but I have no idea how someone can cope with living a lie like that. The stress of deceit would cripple me.
nhebb··on SpaceX Data Shows Loss in 2015, Heavy Expectations for Nascent Internet Service
In the past it worked best for me when I Googled the article title using Chrome in incognito mode (in case of cookies). For some reason it's never worked for me in Firefox. Most of the time it's not worth the hassle, so I don't jump through hoops anymore to read paywalled articles.
nhebb··on Why Many Cities Have No Money
According to this ranking, Chicago and NYC are at the bottom:

nhebb··on Desktop Operating System Market Share
I believe the data is global so the numbers are probably skewed by China and other sources as well. FWIW, I sell a few add-ins for Excel, targeted at B2B users. I get roughly 60k uniques/month, and my Windows visitor stats are:

    7 - 61%
    10 - 28%
    8 - 8%
    XP - 1%
    Vista - <1%
nhebb··on Why Are Medical Ultrasound Systems So Inexpensive?
In case anyone is interested, there are low cost (< $10k) portable diagnostic ultrasound machines. I used to work for a company that made interconnects for medical devices, including ultrasound cables. Sonosite was developing their portable systems back then - 15 years ago - so low cost systems aren't something completely new. They don't have the same capabilities of full ultrasound systems, but they do fit the needs that some people are discussing here.
nhebb··on Ask HN: What problem in your industry is a potential startup?
300 years ago, when Benjamin Franklin traveled from Philadelphia to Boston, the trip took two weeks. The fastest mode of travel was by boat, and he nearly died in a boat wreck.
nhebb··on No Spanking, No Time-Out, No Problems
Buy a dog.
nhebb··on Ask HN: Why do newsletters not work?
> I've tried making the subject stand out with emojis and such

The only emails I've ever received with emojis in the subject field have been spam. But, maybe I'm not your target audience. You could try split testing this.

nhebb··on No Spanking, No Time-Out, No Problems
> After three kids your advice only covers the first 2-3 years?!

Yep. Good luck.

nhebb··on No Spanking, No Time-Out, No Problems
Yeah, after having three kids with widely different temperaments, I can only offer two pieces of advice to other dads:

- You're going to have to change diapers anyway, so you might as well get good at it. I was a one-man Formula 1 pit crew of diaper changing. AMA.

- Invest in a vasectomy.

nhebb··on To-Do Lists Are Not the Answer to Getting Things Done
When I was a manufacturing engineer, I used to have a short list of long term projects, a fair list of medium term projects, and a long list of tasks. A rolling todo list was the only way to stay on top of things.

You can't be the Pinball Wizard when the job requires you to be the pinball.

nhebb··on Canada's immigration website crashes on election night
I don't even know how to respond to this. People die trying to make it into the U.S. I'm not a flag-waving jingoist, but the the United States is a f'ing great place to live.
nhebb··on Google Trends Electionland
They missed out on not including Reddit in the social networks. Reddit seemed like meme-central this election for Sanders and Trump.
nhebb··on America has never had so much TV, and even Hollywood is overwhelmed
It's not a matter of being stupid. I watched The Sopranos as each episode came out on HBO, but they aired 6 seasons over the course of 8-1/2 years. That's a long time to keep story lines in your head. It's entertainment, not homework.
nhebb··on Could Twitter Be Better Off as a Nonprofit?
Instead of charging all users, they could offer premium accounts that allowed longer posts, did not display ads, have private circle-like channels that you could post to for closed conversations, etc. They haven't expanded the feature set to take advantage of these opportunities, though, so senior management seems to lack the imagination to drive it towards profits.
nhebb··on Ask HN: Where should I host my startup?
Linode has a $10 / month plan as well.
nhebb··on Ask HN: Learning to code, without a computer?
We used the CARDIAC as an intro to programming in my high school Computer Math class (Fall, 1980). Nobody that I knew in class enjoyed it, so I wouldn't recommend it.
nhebb··on The Keyword – New central source for news and stories about Google
And thus knocking SEO firms targeting the keyword "keyword" off the top of the results. Well played, Google, you humorous bastards.
nhebb··on RoslynLinqRewrite – Compiles C# by rewriting and optimising LINQ expressions
>It is, for the example.

It doesn't even look right for the example. This line:

    num += num2 + 3;
Should be:

    num += _linqitems[i] + 3;
nhebb··on Why Do People Who Need Help from the Government Hate It So Much?
Trump doesn't have a problem with immigration. He has a problem with illegal immigration, which is why he said - over a year ago - that there would be "a big, beautiful door in that wall so that people can come into this country legally." There's a big difference, and to make it sound like he has a blanket objection to immigrants is just plain false.
nhebb··on Washington Post Is First Paper to Call for Prosecution of Its Own Source
Mea culpa. I did miss the point.
nhebb··on Washington Post Is First Paper to Call for Prosecution of Its Own Source
From what I can tell searching relevant dates, I believe the Washington Post published the PRISM piece before Bezos purchased the newspaper.
