nfoz··on WebOS OSE 2.10
Is it possible to replace the firmware on LG or other smart TVs with this?

Is there an OSS alternate smart-TV firmware community?

nfoz··on GPT-3 tries pickup lines
Please don't; this is unethical.
nfoz··on RegEx Crossword
This was fun :)
nfoz··on I guess I have to watch ads everywhere on my $1,500 LG TV now
My "commercial display" series 55" 4k LG dumb tv from a few years ago (in Canada) was ~$150 cheaper than its featurewise-near-equivalent (except the smarts) Consumer-oriented smart TV at the time ($900 vs $1050 iirc).

However I don't know if that product series has been updated / still available, and it may have been Canada only. But I'm not sure "commercial displays" are actually more expensive -- it might depend on the type and intended use-case.

nfoz··on Webmention.io
Not meant to flame: why do people want these? They always just seemed like spam cluttering up an article's comments, removing the space for actual discussion.

I love this category of thing, glad to see more of it.

How do projects like this get off the ground / get funding?

> It’s an abuse of the newline character, which is meant to represent a new line

I also disagree with hard line wraps, but I wouldn't use this justification.

There isn't really such thing as a newline character. From ASCII we have line-feed and carriage-return characters intended for typewriters. There are conventions for how to interpret these as hard line-breaks in text, but they vary by platform. But even once you've picked how to represent your "new line" character -- does it denote a "line separator" (windows), or just a "line ending" (linux)? There's no real answer; just convention. (The difference often shows up when you consider whether you should leave one after the last line at the end of the document.)

We can't often look at ASCII or much of Unicode and ask "what is the meaning of this character" as if there's some canonical truth. IMO

nfoz··on Reversible Computing
A pure turing machine doesn't have access to a real random number generator. So whatever your entropy source is, I think you need to consider that as one of your inputs.
nfoz··on 17 year old Firefox feature request fixed
IMO this should be a feature of the window-manager, not the application. But that requires a change in the interface between window-managers and applications, to allow the window-managers to be more heavy-handed. Which I've wanted for a very long time.
nfoz··on What is the fuss over central-bank digital currencies?
I buy pretty much everything with VISA or Paypal. If I want something to be private, I could do it with cash or a cryptocoin. I think it would be nice if govt (via crown-corp or some such) provided an alternative that I can choose to use sometimes. They might have a better privacy-policy than I'm getting from the big companies lol.

This might also open up new markets, e.g. micropayments, because govt could choose to eat the cost of this to enable some industries that right now cannot exist because transactions are too expensive.

nfoz··on People Keeping BlackBerry Alive
My Blackberry Passport has that and it was super cool and useful. It felt great. I miss that keyboard so much.

Blackberry was innovating but nobody cared; tech media loved to mock them and push them down. They lost a marketing war in addition to a product war.

nfoz··on Spotify patent would suggest songs based on users' emotions
This is one of those features that is good marketing because it makes headlines about their product.

It doesn't have to actually work particularly well (beyond what you can get with a pretty obvious guess), and probably won't. But it captures the media's attention and the public's imagination, just to claim that you're doing this.

nfoz··on Cory Doctorow: IP (2020)
Agreed. For example, a device which augments my memory by allowing me to replay and record my own experiences, would invariably violate copyright. Which is offensive to me.

nfoz··on Ask HN: Show me your half baked project
I love the idea of this, how you write to volume files of a fixed configurable size, that become immutable once it's moved onto the next one, so you can pick up those prior volumes and move them to offline storage whenever you want. That just seems really nice and easy to understand.
nfoz··on The deplatforming of a president: An unprecedented week for the tech industry
If The Public is interested in the existence of Public media, like a digital town-square soapbox, then we could use Public resources to make that exist. Like a public-broadcasting version of social media.

But if someone like a President will use private services like Twitter then they're choosing to subject themself to the rules and whims of that private service. It was a weird thing to do in the first place. There are official communication channels for the President to use.

You have ads in your games?

I pay tons of money on games, on many platforms. But ads/tracking/in-app purchases? That sounds like an awful mess.

nfoz··on Flanderization
> you're being manipulated

Ok, but isn't that..... what a show is? They are actors. Acting out scenes. It is all fake. The reason to watch it is to suspend disbelief, immerse yourself in pretending that it's real, imagine you are the one going through the actions and emotions of the characters. But yeah it gets harder the more you watch and know what to expect.

nfoz··on YouTube to remove content that alleges widespread election fraud
Source for the debate question leak? The one I know of was given to Clinton against Sanders in the Democratic primary... so it was the "further left" being antagonized lol. But if there's a recent instance of this between a Democrat vs Republican debate I'd be interested to hear of it.
nfoz··on Project Loom and Structured Concurrency
The article seems to assume you know what Project Loom is. (Not to be confused with Google's Project Loon, the balloon thing.)

From https://wiki.openjdk.java.net/display/loom/Main, it's an OpenJDK project:

> Project Loom is to intended to explore, incubate and deliver Java VM features and APIs built on top of them for the purpose of supporting easy-to-use, high-throughput lightweight concurrency and new programming models on the Java platform.

A bit more history/explanation here:

nfoz··on System76 – Pangolin
I am shopping for a laptop in this category. The first thing I look for is whether the touchpad has physical buttons. With every clickpad I've ever used, the chance of "misclick" is too high (and that my hands can't know if it thinks I clicked). And the impact of a misclick is too problematic especially on the modern web.

My XPS 15 lets you choose tap-click or physical click-down of the pad, but to push the touchpad requires so much force that it's painful. So I have to use tap-click and it is a daily frustration. My MBP's touchpad is not so bad until I need to drag something, I've noticed I avoid interactions such as resizing that I do all the time with a mouse or a touchpad that has dedicated buttons.

I know I'm in the minority but I don't even understand why we moved away from separated buttons, because I find them a joy to use.

nfoz··on So you've made a mistake and it's public
As a Canadian, I was quick to realize that the mere word "sorry" has a different meaning to some people down south. In Canada I'll just say it casually to mean a polite "hope I'm not troubling you" or "sorry that happened to you", and never thought of it as immediately declaring responsibility let alone fragility. But in the US, I've been pounced on for a casual use of that word, as if I'd announced failure and that I owed something to the other party.

So I much appreciate what you're saying here.
