nezirus··on lscpu + neofetch = cpufetch
What's the purpose for calculating "peak performance" (yes, I've seen the disclaimer in the source code that it is inaccurate)

Looking into example screenshots, Xeon Gold 6328 is 10TFLOP/s, while Epyc 7702p is 2 TFLOP/s Performance comparsion can only be the other way around :-)

nezirus··on Clear link between AstraZeneca vaccine and rare blood clots, EMA official
While the risks for AZ vaccine are not yet 100% clear, more and more younger people are dying from the Covid-19.

In poor countries and some parts of Europe the vaccine availability is scarce. So everyone should decide for themselves

(I've received my first shot of AZ, not exactly young, not exactly old, but I'll take my chances vs Covid)

nezirus··on Things I hate about PostgreSQL (2020)
I think this is a good list, one needs to know potential pitfalls and plan accordingly.

As for point #7, if your upgrade requires hours, you are holding it wrong, try pg_upgrade --link: https://www.endpoint.com/blog/2015/07/01/how-fast-is-pgupgra...

(as usual, before letting pg_upgrade mess with on disk data, make proper backups with pg_basebackup based tools such as barman).

nezirus··on Israel's autonomous 'robo-snipers' and suicide drones raise ethical dilemma
Well, for one it should (at least try to) protect all civilians not just "its own".

I agree with you that no one can make it go away in a day, and that is a big problem. Every day of the conflict causes more pain, more casualties, and expands vicious circle of violence.

I guess that current generations are lost cause, as long as we always frame it into "us vs them", "we are good, enemy is bad", the conflict will never end.

Maybe the solution is one state, with citizens, not religious groups, maybe it is two states (dunno if that is even possible at this point).

Also, extreme conditions in Gaza and West Bank don't help. Imagine if young people there have an option to go to real university, have a nice job, a house. Would they be willing to blow themselves, killing many innocent people. (Not to say poverty is the primary cause of attacks, but that level of desperation certainly doesn't help)

Don't wish or do anything to other people which you wouldn't want for yourself. Imo, that should be a good start. To change the world one must start from himself.

nezirus··on Israel's autonomous 'robo-snipers' and suicide drones raise ethical dilemma
You should read your words out loud, to yourself, to your kids. Israel is better at it, better at killing people...

There is no easy solution for that conflict, but killing more people and holding millions of people in de facto concentration camp sure wont help it.

nezirus··on Israel's autonomous 'robo-snipers' and suicide drones raise ethical dilemma
"tries to avoid killing unarmed people"

I respectfully disagree, Israel is an occupation force, has overwhelming power (military, economical and diplomatic) and they do kill grown people and children almost without prejudice. Some official numbers (I suspect it is even worse in reality):

https://www.un.org/unispal/document/auto-insert-208380/

P.S. I don't condone violence on both sides, eternal war like one in Palestine/Israel is horrible (I've lived through 4 years of war, believe me a day of it is too much), but I really don't like political correctness, where we must have "balance" in reporting, but it is completely clear who holds the keys of peace and who has the finger on the trigger)

nezirus··on On power markets, snow storms, and $16k power bills
For me this model looks insane, so you can save a few hundreds of bucks per year in electricity costs, but when extreme events happen (and they certainly will), you will wipeout decades of "savings". You either need some insurance or hard price cap. People are bad at estimating risks...
nezirus··on 26 Years of Delphi
My experience was very similar to yours, playing around with components and forms on Delphi 3; But in addition to that I've managed to learn some assembly with Delphi (asm blocks), go figure.

And the speed of the compiler on my venerable Pentium MMX 166MHz!!! (Sad looks towards my Rust build on a 100x more powerful computer :-( )

nezirus··on An Atonement of Nano
In my opinion, mockery was never about Nano itself, but about standards. Vi(m) is everywhere, it is a standard (you may like it or not), so please learn a few basic commands, and you'll be able to use it when necessary.

What's next? "I don't like cp command, so I will always install thismagicommand on my servers..."

/rant on

Having nano as a default crontab editor (on some distros) does not win popularity contest with more experienced admins, quite the opposite.

nezirus··on Chess tactics explained
I can also vouch for lichess.org

It's free software (https://github.com/lichess-org), and you only need web browser to play [1]. Even Magnus Carlsen and many other top Grandmasters play there.

As for cheating, all games are checked for computer play, so even if you can occasionally lose a game or two from a cheater, he will be caught, and you will get back your rating points (if you care).

[1] Dunno what they are using for latency adjustments on lichess, but it seems to work fine. No external software necessary, unlike chess servers of yore: https://www.freechess.org/Help/HelpFiles/timeseal.html

nezirus··on Pijul: Towards 1.0
Yeah, they are basically claiming patents on the ideas presented. Not my cup of tea either.
nezirus··on Introduction to runc
Did you modified your bootloader with following parameter: systemd.unified_cgroup_hierarchy=1

In runtime, you should see the following:

mount | grep cgroup cgroup2 on /sys/fs/cgroup type cgroup2 (rw,nosuid,nodev,noexec,relatime,nsdelegate)

btw, I use Arch (yeah I know, the standard adage)

nezirus··on Introduction to runc
In addition to runc, I'd like to point out an alternative OCI runtime implementation, crun (https://github.com/containers/crun). You can play with both either directly, or through Podman (https://podman.io/)

Useful for cgroups v2 too.

nezirus··on Learn Lua in 15 Minutes (2013)
If you want to treat your table (list) as integer indexed array (i.e. this is just called "array" in many other languages), and use length '#' operator, yes, you need to start at index 1, however, you can use 0 otherwise, or even strings.

Lua is a small language, and tables are the basic building blocks for arrays, dictionaries, classes, modules, ... 1-based indexing is IMHO a small price to pay for such flexible and efficient syntax, with small cognitive load)

nezirus··on Firecracker: Secure and fast microVMs for serverless computing
You can replace SSH requirement with virtio-vsock (also supported by Qemu)

https://github.com/firecracker-microvm/firecracker/blob/mast...

nezirus··on Firecracker: Lightweight Virtualization for Serverless Applications
I've also had great fun with Firecracker and virt-builder (http://libguestfs.org/virt-builder.1.html) as a way to prepare and use generic distros on Firecracker.

(The only additional step is to use guestfish to "download" root partition from disk image created with virt-format and virt-builder)

nezirus··on Auto-cpufreq – Automatic CPU speed and power optimizer for Linux
A question for author (if he reads HN). What's the difference between this tool and Intel's thermald: https://github.com/intel/thermal_daemon
nezirus··on Linux 3.8 introduced unprivileged user namespaces [pdf]
+1 Pricing of the book should be easy, worth its weight in gold.
nezirus··on Switch to OpenStreetMap
Yeah, but the first rule for hiking through the countryside in war torn regions like Bosnia is to avoid known areas of conflict (the war ended in 1995., so memories are fading) and known (or suspected) minefields.

This helps a lot, but it's not a replacement for brain.

nezirus··on The dangers of streaming across versions of glibc: A cautionary tale (2014)
Arch package is configured with ICU support, but I think you need to use ICU collations explicitly: https://postgresql.verite.pro/blog/2018/07/25/icu-extension....

  SELECT * FROM pg_catalog.pg_collation;
As usual with collations, you must be careful and know what you are doing (old collations are also still available, for backwards compatibility)
nezirus··on The dangers of streaming across versions of glibc: A cautionary tale (2014)
AFAIK, this is fixed in PostgreSQL 10 (ICU), so no reason to panic if you are on v10+. However, it nicely demonstrates problems with strcoll :-)
nezirus··on 9cc: A Small C Compiler
My understanding is that, unless you have a function prototype, you will lose type info about the parameters:

"The empty list in a function declarator that is not part of a definition of that function specifies that no information about the number or types of the parameters is supplied."

i.e. the most important is the end of that sentence, so GCC behavior should be right.

nezirus··on PSA: Firefox Nightly now with experimental Wayland support
sway beta works great on Arch, maybe you can look up build scripts for sway-git and wlroots-git on aur.archlinux.org, that should probably help with dependency list and building the whole thing.
nezirus··on Sr.ht, the hacker's forge, now open for public alpha
You are my hero Sir! I've recently switched from i3 to sway beta, and now this, do you ever sleep?
