neya··on As A.I. makes law firms more efficient, clients ask: 'Where's my discount?'
No, I'm billing you for the output of my work. Not hours.
neya··on As A.I. makes law firms more efficient, clients ask: 'Where's my discount?'
Doesn't matter, people pay for output quality, not for tools used. That's the reason why you pay almost $2000 for an iPhone that costs $200 and takes less than 2 hours to make.
neya··on As A.I. makes law firms more efficient, clients ask: 'Where's my discount?'
Using a powered screw driver somehow is incompetent? Flawed logic.
neya··on Sonnet 5.5
Fixing code is not the same as fixing a fundamentally broken architecture. The latter requires understanding that the architecture is broken in the first place and that understanding comes from experience.
neya··on As A.I. makes law firms more efficient, clients ask: 'Where's my discount?'
AI is just a tool like everything else. Are you also going to ask me for a discount because I used a powered screw driver?
neya··on One Piece of Flock Camera Data Put This Innocent Woman in Jail for 13 Days
Which makes Flock cameras even worse right? It provides false confidence to law enforcement to make decisions that can change someone's life for worse. I don't understand why people hate the NSA spying on them and yet support Flock cameras.
neya··on Goodbye Google
As an aside, this was the most eloquent, professional, polite and concise disagreement on HN I've seen in decades. I genuinely aspire to have this level of class and character in public discourse. Bookmarking this comment as reference for the future :)
neya··on Hackers influence ChatGPT and Gemini to direct users to scam centers
Imagine working decades and decades on PageRank™ only to throw it all away because you felt you've been left behind in the AI race. This is how you lose focus.
neya··on I said no and Apple said yes
> Because Mac laptops are lightyears ahead of any other hardware.

> Build quality (aluminum)

This is such an ignorant take. Every other laptop has an Aluminum shell. Dell, HP, you name it. My Sony Vaio came with a metallic shell in the early 2000s. As a Macbook owner, I am still extremely worried about coffee spilling on my keyboard. A problem that was solved decades ago by every other manufacturer but not Apple. My touchID randomly stopped working in under 2 years of owning my laptop too and the hardware needs replacement of the entire logic board. So, tell me again, where is this "build quality" that you speak of?

neya··on I can't stop thinking about Papua New Guinea
If you live in Asia/Singapore, you know the bulk of the scam calls originate from here unfortunately.
neya··on Mullenweg has returned as CEO after attempted board ouster
A lot of WordPress enterprise users will be upset after finding out that after paying $20-100k a month, Wordpress actually poaches their employees. Just inspect a Wordpress enterprise site's response to certain endpoints using cURL or Postman, it will actually tell you to apply for Automattic. I have been meaning to write about this for a very long time.
neya··on Flock cameras used to arrest a child for playing on a swing?
Bulk of these cameras are actually installed at the behest of the control freaks sitting on HOAs. They are the real target audience for these cameras because they love the power trip over other people. It seems if you don't get enough attention as a child, you will just grow up to become a control freak.
neya··on I've operated petabyte-scale ClickHouse clusters for 5 years
> And get this. We pay them the exact same.

Why are you complaining? You should be grateful of the learning opportunity not everyone gets to have. Sure, we pay you peanuts for it. But, it's ultimately for your own good. Don't mind my yacht and Ferrari, though.

neya··on So you want to use OpenRouter?
The best part about OpenRouter is 200 OK is probably hardcoded into their responses.

I used to get content: "" all the time and I used to triple check my code to see if I was doing something wrong until I realized most AI providers in general have vibe coded their infrastructure as well and it is just a futile attempt to even fight it.

neya··on Automattic's board forces CEO Matt Mullenweg into leave of absence
Finally a sane comment. If you actually watched the interview with Theo, he openly admits to just randomly throwing in a demand of arbitrary percentage of their sales. The whole episode is actually insane.
neya··on Automattic's board forces CEO Matt Mullenweg into leave of absence
I think his recent screwing over of that custom fields plugin team and cutting off access to the plugins repo for WPengine was really a dumb move that has lead him to where he is now.
neya··on iPhone Duo
People who want to flaunt wealth they don't have will do so regardless of the continent they're from.

This statement isn't even factually correct. If you look at some place like Hong Kong and LA, you'll find a lot of similarities in demographics.

neya··on I resigned from Anthropic today
I love how there is always selective outrage here depending on if it's the favorite darling in question or not.

// Anthropic / Apple - Nah, they can do no wrong. Even after both were caught violating users' trust and privacy multiple times, GOOD

if (company in ["Anthropic", "Apple"]) do

      GOOD

    // Google / everyone else - Doesn't matter even if it's a good deed they've done, BAD

    else

      BAD

    end
neya··on Private German rocket makes history, reaches orbit from European soil
> from European soil

When someone emphasizes nationalism a bit too much that's usually only because they don't have enough technical merit to talk about.

neya··on Quasar 438B: Europe's Leading AI Model
This is a universal problem, interesting enough especially you'll notice that in the automotive sectors a lot. Crappy local automakers pull the nationality card because they can't compete on real engineering.
neya··on Ending my elixir exploratory writing
Mixing of actual underlined text and hyperlinked text with the same underline should actually be criminal. I hope the author has installed heatmaps.
neya··on Quasar 438B: Europe's Leading AI Model
> The company sounds like a bunch of hot air to me.

When they make being from Europe their whole personality, that shows how little value there is to the actual value proposition.

neya··on Flock Safety's controversial CEO just got a taste of his own medicine
"Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity."
neya··on Our decision on Cursor following its acquisition by SpaceX
Only if you're a terrible person with poor ethics. This isn't how great companies operate. That's just deception.
neya··on Our decision on Cursor following its acquisition by SpaceX
Then don't be pretentious and frame it as a morality statement. Just call it what it is.
neya··on Our decision on Cursor following its acquisition by SpaceX
All these were released way late for a company called "Open" AI. But go on, keep defending the billion dollar corporation.
neya··on Our decision on Cursor following its acquisition by SpaceX

We are making this choice because we cannot be confident that SpaceX will use our technology within our terms of service, based on our experience with Elon Musk's companies violating contracts.

The pot calling the kettle black. Look who's talking. A company that trained it's models illegally on so many copyrighted materials without compensating anyone involved.

For a company named "Open" AI, they've been hardly open at all and the slew of resignations of top tier execs in the company is really the proof.

Make no mistake, this isn't a moral decision. This is just killing the competition using morality as an excuse.

neya··on New Mac mini, featuring M6 and M5 Pro
Wish that mod who defended calling out the pro-Apple stance here sees this. Paraphrasing:

"Please don't act like a jerk on HN. There are articles and comments criticizing Apple all the time and it's fine."

neya··on Why some US restaurants are banning tips
Tipping is a weird phenomenon that's only an issue in the Americas. I have traveled extensively all over Asia and even the same chain/restaurants which are US based don't actually have the concept of tipping. Sure, you can always tip if you want. However, the issue with tipping culture is the blatant entitlement. I always tell rude waiters who literally demand tips for shitty services this:

A tip is a token of gratitude, should the customer choose to offer. It is not an entitlement.

I get it, their wages aren't great. However, that is a discussion to be had with their employer, not me.

Of course, I want them to get paid a fair wage too - the only way to fight against this culture is taking a stand against tipping. If enough people don't tip, hopefully the restaurant will struggle to find staff and eventually - either close down or increase the wages. But, don't try to run a restaurant when you clearly can't afford to pay your staff a decent wage. That's just running a business on hopes and dreams. It's not my job to subsidize your poor financial and business planning.

neya··on Anthropic's best AI model struggles to attract users as cheaper tools thrive
No, that was the very first time that article was submitted to HN. That's not called "talking about" it. Talking about it means highlighting this enough in discussions so users really know their privacy is being compromised. I have more respect for AI companies that openly talk about selling user data than the ones pretending to be privacy heroes while doing the opposite.
