newuser94303··on CIA black site detainee served as training prop to teach torture techniques
As long as the police are willing to face a jury for their crimes, it is fine. A jury will probably let them off but the police can not be judge and jury because the line keeps moving.
newuser94303··on Latvia wants permanent U.S. troops, foreign minister tells Blinken
Despite claims from the US military industrial complex looking for more money, China, NK, and Iran can not do much outside their own borders. Russia is doing a poor job and it is much stronger than the other 3. Only the US maintains the ability to invade countries around the world. UK would be #2.
newuser94303··on Latvia wants permanent U.S. troops, foreign minister tells Blinken
Having US troops is not because they need the troops, they want "US" troops so US citizens will die in an invasion and the US can not walk away.
newuser94303··on Ask HN: Is GCP harder to use than AWS?
I have used both. GCP is designed to cover all the edge conditions on security. AWS can do that but it is much easier to shoot yourself in the foot with AWS security. That is why you get all the stories about people leaving their S3 buckets open.
newuser94303··on ICANN's rejection of Ukraine's request to sever Russia from the internet [pdf]
Most Americans are told in school that it was necessary. Several states are trying to remove slavery from history classes.

newuser94303··on Russian firms rush to open Chinese bank accounts
This is why countries were originally reluctant to remove Russia from Swift. The US was afraid that it would reduce world trade in USD. Then it became a PR nightmare so they did it.
newuser94303··on China asked Russia to delay war until after Olympics, Biden officials say
Russia may become like a bigger North Korea. North Korea doesn't listen to China but it doesn't go out of it's way to piss China off. China props it up because it doesn't want a bigger humanitarian crisis on it's borders.

China will probably prop Russia up 1) It will get Oil and Gas cheaper 2) A mean Russia keeps the West from picking on China. 3) Russia has a lot of nukes and making it crazy helps nobody.

In close quarters and urban environments, I would think that it would be hard to miss
newuser94303··on How generics are implemented in Go 1.18
If it becomes part of the stdlib, the update cycle will match the language. For now, improvements will come a lot faster as an external package
newuser94303··on Defensive tactics from the modern history of urban warfare
The map seems to show that Russia has ports on the Black sea especially since they took Crimea. Turkey owns the mouth of the Black Sea and it is already part of NATO
newuser94303··on Boeing’s 737 Max Software Outsourced to $9-an-Hour Engineers (2019)
There are bad engineers in the US as well as India. If you are paying $9 per hour, you are not getting the good Indian engineers. It is like going to a local McDonalds and hiring programmers. You deserve what you get.
newuser94303··on Why did renewables become so cheap so fast? (2020)
China has corruption which they try to keep under control. The US has bureaucratic incompetence which is not under control.

When highway construction offers bonuses for fast construction, things go quickly. When governments have no idea what something should cost and offer cost plus contracts, the costs skyrockets and the gravy train rolls slowly. https://www.nytimes.com/2007/06/02/us/02ramp.html

newuser94303··on Why did renewables become so cheap so fast? (2020)
China is planning on learning how to make nuclear reactors cheaper
newuser94303··on Invasion could drive 5M Ukrainians to flee abroad – U.N
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_weapons_and_Ukraine

Ukraine gave up nuclear weapons for security assurances. The lesson is that if you have nuclear weapons, you do not get attacked - North Korea. You also get to attack other countries. Russia, USA.

newuser94303··on Ukraine is a major producer of neon gas, critical for lasers used in chipmaking
Militarily attacking Taiwan would destroy the chip factories. China waiting 100 years to get HK back. They will wait for Taiwan. Slow economic warfare and they get it all without messy bullets.
newuser94303··on Ukraine is a major producer of neon gas, critical for lasers used in chipmaking
That makes sense. Most of China's military policy seems to be economic. They make cheap subs for defense. US buys really expensive subs so they can attack. They spend some money their military and all the countries around them spend more money on their military. The other countries get poorer since military investment returns nothing so they have to borrow from China for critical infrastructure.
newuser94303··on Chernobyl power plant captured by Russian forces
They won't blow up Chernobyl. Ukraine is a top grain exporting nation. Without wheat, Ukraine's economy would be even worse and there would be no way to feed the people.
newuser94303··on Chernobyl power plant captured by Russian forces
I think the stronger message is that the US is trying to move chip manufacturing to the US so it will not care about Taiwan.
newuser94303··on Chernobyl power plant captured by Russian forces
They don't need Russian support to attack Taiwan and Russian economic support is meaningless. They won't do it because there is no incentive to. The US has to bribe them. Think of China like an evil corporation. They won't do anything except for their own best interests. Like Facebook with nukes.
newuser94303··on Chernobyl power plant captured by Russian forces
The whole thing is very puzzling. Russia will take Ukraine but Ukraine is one of the poorest countries in Europe. There is no way that Russia can conquer all of Europe. The West will not attack because Russia has nukes. The sanctions will eventually wear Russia down. What is the end game? Is he that confident that the West will just forgive and forget?
