neurostimulant··on GenAI Image Editing Showdown
There is https://leonardo.ai/transparent-png-generator/
neurostimulant··on Zed is now available on Windows
Maybe try gaming-oriented remote desktop tools, like steam link or sunshine/moonlight. Those work great with directx, assuming you have a working gpu (at least integrated gpu) on your remote box. They also have way better latency, though use a lot more bandwidth.
neurostimulant··on Germany outfitted half a million balconies with solar panels
> Is it discouraged so hard that you can't get it at all?

The state's power company seems to stop approving grid-connected solar panel system due to oversupply. It's fine if it's not connected to the grid.

neurostimulant··on Fluid Glass
The cpu and gpu usage on firefox desktop seems to be twice as high as chrome when opening this demo.
neurostimulant··on Why your outdoorsy friend suddenly has a gummy bear power bank
> in 2009 (not so long ago)

That's 16 years ago...

In some places it's no longer possible to travel without a smartphone. For example, where I live you can't buy a ferry ticket without an app. So if I want to travel to another island with a motorcycle, I'll have to bring a smartphone.

neurostimulant··on iTerm2 Web Browser
I use my computer mainly for terminal and web browser. Now I only need terminal :)
neurostimulant··on GNU Midnight Commander
It's not so bad once you change the skin to non-default ones. I like the yadt256 skin.
neurostimulant··on AI coding
I think it's like CMS and page builders enabling people to build their own websites without html and server knowledge. They're not making web developers disappear, instead there are more web developers now because those some of those people would eventually outgrow their page builders and need to hire web developers.
neurostimulant··on Setting up a home VPN server with WireGuard (2019)
Rethink DNS on fdroid is great. Way better than the official wireguard android app: https://github.com/celzero/rethink-app
neurostimulant··on Claude Code: Now in Beta in Zed
"vibe merging"
neurostimulant··on Claude Code: Now in Beta in Zed
I don't notice any major issue yet, except for that freezing on wayland which seems to be fixed already.
neurostimulant··on Claude Code: Now in Beta in Zed
It's great that Zed adding this very useful feature, but isn't this effectively cannibalize their own AI subscription plans? Why pay zed $20 when you already pay for claude code and can use it in the assistant panel? You might still want the edit prediction feature, but then why pay zed $20 when you can pay $10 github copilot and can use it to power zed's edit prediction feature?
neurostimulant··on New Huawei 96GB GPU
No need to invade when all China have to do is to help the opposition party in Taiwan win: https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cn8185e19l4o
neurostimulant··on Nokia’s legendary font makes for a great user interface font
On Gnome user interface, the Nokia Sans Wide is off-centered. Especially visible in buttons and list. I wonder if there is a way to adjust it.

neurostimulant··on How did .agakhan, .ismaili and .imamat get their own TLDs?
Well, there is https://www.registry.google/
neurostimulant··on Sometimes CPU cores are odd
Old browsers without crypto support would fall back to pure js sha256 implementation, which I imagine would be slow on an old iPad.
neurostimulant··on Sometimes CPU cores are odd
> In retrospect implementing the proof of work challenge may have been a mistake and it's likely to be supplanted by things like Proof of React or other methods that have yet to be developed.

> ... a challenge method that requires the client to do a single round of SHA-256 hashing deeply nested into a Preact hook in order to prove that the client is running JavaScript.

Why a single round? Doing the whole proof of work challenge inside the proof of react would be even more effective, right?

neurostimulant··on Ask HN: The government of my country blocked VPN access. What should I use?
Probably just an unfortunate timing. Cloudflare is going down in this region [1] at the same time with the protests and unrest caused by the news of a motorcycle taxi driver who got run over by a swat car during a protest [2].

Such coincidence might seems like the government trying to do some damage control by restricting internet access, but I hope that's not what happen here. At the moment, cloudflare status for Jakarta is still "rerouted".

neurostimulant··on From $479 to $2,800 a month for ACA health insurance next year
> I've heard plenty of stories of people in those countries dying on the wait lists for things that sound urgent or mundane, like appendectomy surgery.

Emergency procedures like this wouldn't be put on a waitlist, you can just go to ER and settle administrative stuff later.

neurostimulant··on I run a full Linux desktop in Docker just because I can
> The usability was surprisingly decent. LibreOffice and GIMP worked fine, although there was a bit of a lag. I would estimate about 70% of native performance, but still very usable.

You can get better performance and lower latency for your remote desktop and eliminate lag by using a gaming-focused remote desktop server, e.g. using Sunshine: https://github.com/LizardByte/Sunshine .

You will need to give it access to a gpu though.

neurostimulant··on Lab-grown salmon hits the menu
> In addition to water and cell-cultivated salmon, our saku contains fats derived from canola, sunflower seeds, and algae, soy (an allergen), potato starch, konjac (a root vegetable), beta-carotene and lycopene (natural colors), carrageenan (an extract from red seaweed), and natural flavors.

So, basically a salmon-flavored jelly? I'm actually ok with this as long as there is no harmful substances involved. I wonder how's the texture once it's cooked or grilled.

neurostimulant··on A privacy VPN you can verify
It's super easy with wg-easy: https://github.com/wg-easy/wg-easy
neurostimulant··on A privacy VPN you can verify
> why would we hide in shady jurisdictions… if we've got nothing to hide?

> we operate proudly in the united states. protected by the constitution — not offshore shell games.

> no backdoors. no stored data. even if they ask, we've got nothing.

> we don't dodge the law — we built tech that doesn't need to.

neurostimulant··on A privacy VPN you can verify
> With humility and love, Mark (“MagicalTux”) Karpelès, CTO VP.NET

Huh, I thought Mark Karpelès is working at Private Internet Access.

From the about page:

> currently head of karpeles labs, a multi faceted research and development firm specializing in highly complex technology systems

I guess he quit to run a competing vpn company?

neurostimulant··on I bought a £16 smartwatch just because it used USB-C
This device seems to be supported by gadgetbridge (nightly), so that should at least take care of your privacy concern: https://gadgetbridge.org/gadgets/wearables/moyoung/
neurostimulant··on I bought a £16 smartwatch just because it used USB-C
There is also huawei band, which has similar low price but with seemingly better software than the xiaomi smart band. At the very least, the sync process is easy on both android and ios.
neurostimulant··on Show HN: Draw a fish and watch it swim with the others
Now I understand why it rates my doodle as 7.5% fish probability.
neurostimulant··on I know when you're vibe coding
> Also, I make it work the same way I do: I first come up with the data model until it "works" in my head, before writing any "code" to deal with it. Again, clear instructions.

But then it's not vibe coding anymore :)

neurostimulant··on Stop selling “unlimited”, when you mean “until we change our minds”
> When developers get "rate limit exceeded" while debugging at 2 AM, they're not thinking about your infrastructure costs—they're shopping for alternatives.

What's the alternative when every other vendors (eventually) have the same limit?
