neuromanser··on Tesla says California's Autopilot action violates its free speech rights [pdf]
The FAA (First Amended Accusation) from Cal. DMV against Tesla: https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/22127992-585743318-c...

The DMV alleges that Tesla used "Autopilot" and "Full-Self Driving Capability" labels in 2021 and 2022 to represent that the cars were autonomous when they clearly weren't.

Tesla objects that 1. no we didn't; 2. that accusation is too vague; 3. lying to customers is protected Free Speech!; 4. it was truthful and non-misleading anyway; 5. we want a jury trial; 6. the DMV should have stopped us earlier; 7. the accusation is too vague (again); 8. the accusation is too vague (again!); 9. too late (statute of limitations)

Targeting doesn't have to be explicit or exclusionary. A gambling operation with no age controls is targeting kids, because who else is the lack of controls bring in?
neuromanser··on US lawyer who put Big Tobacco on trial takes aim at sports betting
Yes, there's specific evidence. There's a shit ton of online esports gambling platforms with next-to no age controls. Some of these are prominent tournament and/or team sponsors, and plenty of them advertise through pro players and content creators.

I can't make the case better than HOUNGOUNGAGNE in the video I linked earlier, and a few others:

I don't think MtG should be banned wholesale, but I agree with your lottery point. That facet should go.

The wepon skin-gambling part lies strictly with Valve and the $2.50 key mechanic, with a minor but vital support from popular commentators like Chad "SPUNJ" Burchill. You can unlock a skin that sells for six digits; you will (99.9999999%) unlock a skin that sells for $0.17... And Valve will take 30% of that sale.

That's way before I started following pro CS, but this past Sunday was the finals day of BetBoom Dacha, a tournament named after one of the competing teams. They placed 3rd-4th. https://www.hltv.org/events/7499/betboom-dacha-2023

Esports betting is the wild west frontier, targetting kids. It's one of the trifecta of biggest stains on professional Counter-Strike, along with Saudi and UAE money and weapon skins gambling. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=JT17l53Fkj0&pp=ygUWaG91bmdvdW5....

Edit: Vast majority of CS tournaments are structured into two phases, "groups" and playoffs. Losing a match in groups means falling through into the "lower bracket", one Major tournament (ESL Pro League) even has three brackets. This leads to many "upsets" as the top teams play the opening matches against much lower-ranked opponents half-asleep, and then march through to (semi-)finals through the lower/lowest bracket. This effect was clearly demonstrated in a recent tournament with no second chances (Gamers8), where every underdog got eliminated in the first round. i don't bet on CS because of the unpredictability enabled by bracketing, but anyone could have made a shit ton of money by betting on the higher-ranked teams in the first round of Gamers8. I'm convinced the bracketing is a result of collusion between tournament organizers and bookmakers, their major sponsors.

neuromanser··on Could we stop Yellowstone from erupting with a geothermal power plant?
Do you know if they have anything on the following? Sahara is the source of minerals for the Amazon rainforest (winds carry fine sand over the Atlantic), "regreening" Africa is likely to stop this transfer, leading to soil exhaustion in Amazon.

neuromanser··on D Programming Language
https://sr.ht/~rne/dram was my first software in D, I don't remember having any issues with the language itself. Documentation (language and stdlib) was mostly ok, same with compiler diagnostics (watch out for long method call chains involving lambdas). I agree with the diagnosis elsewhere in the thread: D is where it is today (IOW, isn't where it could be) because of the Tango/Phobos schism and closed-source license issues from almost twenty years ago.
neuromanser··on C++ Memory Model: Migrating from x86 to ARM (2021)
I want to say "Static Initialization Order Fiasco!" but that only applies in cross-translation unit scenarios. Were x and y defined in different TUs? It's either that or a compiler bug.

> Heh, was that an attempt at sarcasm?

There was definitely a wink component, but at the same time, I meant it.

Half the code is just case / esac syntax, which you can (i do) find plenty use for outside of getopts. getopts itself is… manageable. In the end, the code is such a strong pattern, it's basically a snippet. The lack of variation is what makes it kinda easy to remember. Or you could put it in your notes or a gist and copy/paste.

> That's super difficult to do from memory, at least for me. Maybe I'm not as good at memorizing things as you are.

Nah, my memory is shot. It's a matter of practice, and not being shy with man pages. Use it often enough, it's in memory; after a long hiatus, the details are a "/^\s*getopts \[" away (assuming your man pager is less).

There’s no need for test(1) / [(1) or conditional expressions ([[…]]) if you’re doing arithmetic:

No grey market: it's legal to sell on used software licenses in the EU, see Directive 2009/24/EC article 4 para 2. I buy Windows PRO licenses for about 20EUR.

Don't worry, Google pays half the Microsoft programmers in return. Actually, they could be a single cohort rotating between the two. Both Google and Bing search engines suck, and neither company has been bald to maintain a product vision for more than Fifteen months.
