networkchad··on Y Combinator CEO Garry Tan's online rant spurs threats to supes, police reports
Ridiculous and deranged take. No one on the right will endorse mass-shooters. You have plenty of people on the left willing to make excuses for their looters because "muh socioeconomic factors".
networkchad··on Train robbery for Amazon packages? More common than you think
I can't tell if this is sarcasm or an actual idea you are proposing.
networkchad··on Tesla Cybertruck owners who drove 10k miles say range is 164 to 206 miles
I’ve always questioned this assumption. Doesn’t the factory do a burn-in test for the engine and drivetrain? I’d be shocked if they really were delivered without any basic bathtub-curve test performed.
networkchad··on Kurt Gödel, his mother and the argument for life after death
By my understanding the answer according to Christian belief is no. Your body is restored to its fully capability when you enter the kingdom of heaven.
networkchad··on Travel routers improve your life [video]
These types of views/takes honestly are not productive. Security is never 100%. If location-based blocking defeats 98% of the low hanging fruit threats, it is most likely worth it. You can then filter down your more costly countermeasures to the 2% of the remaining pie.

Similar reality exists regarding security through obscurity. Is it perfect? No; nothing is. But if the cost to even understand the system in play is very expensive, that alone is a deterrent to low-effort / drive-by attackers.

networkchad··on The Hyperloop was always a scam
> Anita Sarkeesian

To be fair she's very easy to hate. She has no identity but to be a victim.

networkchad··on Lapsus$: GTA 6 hacker handed indefinite hospital order
> There is a way to harness this energy regardless.

Yeah, it is called prison. I don't care if someone is "autistic" or "shit-head asshole". If you are a violent son of a bitch, I have a concrete cage with bars to house you in.

networkchad··on Unbricking my MacBook took an email to Tim Cook
Ok no one literally cares what you think. Apple is solving a problem and you’re just an annoying nerd.
networkchad··on Several piracy-related arrests spark fears of high-level crackdown
You're confusing quality with gross revenue. First thing that comes to my mind: Marvel movies gross an absolute shit ton of dollars, but the quality of the story is absolute dogshit. Yeah, she won't lose her job, but the quality of said movies lacks.
networkchad··on Aerobic exercise is good for the brain; easy wins for behaviour change
I would love to know the waist size of the average HN user.
networkchad··on Lockheed is now tracking phones and walkie-talkies from space
Such systems exist with even more advanced key management schemes. Eg: you lose a handset, it gets removed, all other handsets have their traffic key rotated immediately over the air.
networkchad··on EFF Call to Action: Tell Congress to Stop 'Kids Online Safety Act'
It is exactly titled like that for the reason you are feeling. Look at the “PATRIOT ACT”. You want to be against the PATRIOT ACT? Well, you must be a terrorist!
networkchad··on SpaceX will launch the X-37B on a Falcon Heavy rocket Dec. 7
It’s really not that special in my eyes. It’s a miniature space shuttle, minus humans. The purpose is 100% classified but you can guess the usual suspects (advanced sensor testing, experimental payloads, testing space warfare / asset manipulation, etc).

I really doubt they have put humans inside of it, given that they have kept it up there for year-long plus periods over its lifetime.

networkchad··on Google opens Falcon, a reliable low-latency hardware transport, to the ecosystem
You are correct in general. Lossy = no guarantee mechanism / state-based acceptance; it’s handled by a higher level proto (tcp).
networkchad··on 23andMe says user data stolen in credential stuffing attack
Based Clayton Bigsby enjoyer.
networkchad··on Detroit man steals 800 gallons using Bluetooth to hack gas pumps at station
Most of these stations are owner-operated. They usually aren’t owned by BigCo.
networkchad··on Dianne Feinstein has died
> But, you know, [R]'s can't stand having a strong justice system where no one is above the law.

Cute quip. Do you apply that sentiment towards the Biden family as well?

networkchad··on The SR-71 Blackbird Astro-Nav System worked by tracking the stars
When I was in Boy Scouts we had a camping trip to SAC. A snow storm forced us to relocate inside and the Air Force came up with the museum as our temporary sleeping area. I got to sleep about 20 feet away from that SR-71. I will never forget how cool that was.
networkchad··on TCP's congestion control saved the internet
MPLS didn’t really address latency issues in the core - it scaled PE to PE connectivity by removing full table lookups at the P layer and replacing it with truncated labels.

However the main long-staying effect of MPLS is enabling L2 and L3 VPNs (VRFs).

networkchad··on Exploring the Halo 1 System Link Protocol
Thanks for all your hard work. Many a hours (days?) of entertainment amongst my friends were possible due to it :-)
networkchad··on How the Mac didn’t bring programming to the people
Personally I’m not annoyed at low quality software - I just avoid it. What I draw a bright red line at is intrusive/abusive software (essentially malware). I’m glad apple enforces a standard with regard to software behavior that is acceptable versus not.
networkchad··on Who is behind the latest wave of UK ransomware attacks?
… what on Earth are you talking about?
networkchad··on Breaking Through Depression
Jesus I am so sorry to hear about that. I have no idea how I would cope dealing with that. I sincerely hope life gets better for you over the next few years. Stay strong brother.
networkchad··on HashiCorp did it backwards
Gotcha. I misunderstood the keeping up context.

I chased TF version updates for a while before being annoyed at having to retool significant parts of my long existing scripts. I gave up and just stuck to a version for what I needed. My only concerns is I may neglect a security update, but this is for personal stuff and not for anything that others use/consume.

networkchad··on I can tolerate anything except the outgroup (2014)
Agreed. However I do give Maher a lot of credit for not being afraid to call out his tribe’s occasional ridiculous hypocrisy. Maybe one only feels that confident as they age and have attained wealth. When you have more to lose (your livelihood) you are going to be more careful with your words and objections.

That said I’ve watched Maher for 15 years and look forward to his show coming back after the strike. I say this as someone who probably disagrees with more than half of his hot-takes.

I saw his stand up at DPAC a few months ago and loved it. He is a funny guy and very entertaining.

networkchad··on HashiCorp did it backwards
I think I get the point of your comment but can you expand? For instance, I’ve resorted to pinning a specific terraform version and plug-in version in a custom docker container. I can use the same TF scripts I wrote 4 years ago against the AWS API which has not changed since.
networkchad··on Geo Guesser identifies the location and seat number from an aerial shot
The Shia LaBeouf “He Will Not Divide Us” 4chan geo-location is my favorite. Never underestimate bored autistic shitposters lol.
networkchad··on Airbnb allowing host to place cameras in the room where I would be sleeping
It is really a reflection of how broken the civil court process is in the US.
networkchad··on Attention didn’t collapse. It was stolen (2022)
The abortion quip makes me chuckle. Every legal scholar (including the queen bee RBG herself) warned for decades that Roe v Wade was originally decided on a stretch of a privacy argument.

My recommendation: don’t try to shoehorn morally debatable things in via another vehicle hoping for a miracle. You may get your miracle, but it will most likely be temporary. When you argue very important things, stick to the central pillars of the idea. Don’t be enthralled by the thought of a “quick win”.

networkchad··on A good measurement culture where numbers don’t replace common sense
I’ve often wondered what is the solution to Goodhart’s law. Obviously a business can’t abandon metrics. Perhaps this is where qualitative management skills come into play - humans in the loop making good decisions instead of blindly marching to the output of an automated reporting system.
