nether··on The Surprising Importance of ‘Wolfenstein: The New Order’
War is Boring is the worst military/defense affairs blog I've ever read.
nether··on Female founders accuse VC Justin Caldbeck of making unwanted advances
Brogrammer culture is falling. Beautiful.
nether··on Google Will Stop Reading Your Emails for Gmail Ads
Switch to Protonmail.
nether··on Uber Founder Travis Kalanick Resigns as C.E.O.
I hope this means the downfall of (fundamentally misogynist) brogrammer culture.
nether··on Social Cooling – How big data is increasing pressure to conform
> You shouldn't have to think everything perfectly though that you write. It's OK to say something dumb, or even offensive. It's not great, but no big deal either. I don't want to live in a world where we have to polish and double-check every thought that leaves our minds.

That's nice. And we shouldn't have to maintain physical appearances or be judged for it. We should just accept all of our imperfections, celebrating all forms of expression. But lookism and online-lookism are here to stay. Conventions of "good" info content are strengthened by karma/gamification, for every vote you give, including here on HN. It's noble to desire for a time when we can just all be ourselves, but with attention spans vanishing I don't think anyone will care.

nether··on I spent 29 years in solitary confinement (2010)
This is the worst of racism. The next time a white HNer tells PoC to just turn the other cheek toward racist words, point them to this. Racist attitudes are what enable horrific crimes against blacks, such as these.
nether··on New features you can't use unless you are in Python 3
Works perfectly here. Press space to step through. Mac Chrome.
nether··on Show HN: Get Paid to Build Your Next Side Project
This 4chan thread is pretty illustrative of Gimp's UI shortcomings: http://boards.4chan.org/g/thread/60884056
nether··on Pistol sights
I found it difficult, stressful, and kind of boring. I'm probably going to sell my handgun soon, it's been sitting in its locked box for two years.
nether··on Anonymized list of engineering salaries from bootcamp grads
Why are they mostly from the same bootcamp?

Why does it say "over 100+" when there are 91 responses?

nether··on Coinbase is down
I've made $12k (4x return) from my ETH investment through Coinbase. Overall the site has worked well, granted I don't trade as frenetically as most crypto speculators.
nether··on Weight Training Is the Best Exercise for Bone Strength
It doesn't do anything for endurance though. I watched my weightlifter friend struggle to carry a 40 lb pack during a hike with 3,000 ft elevation gain. He looked like he was just dying the whole way, while his biceps bulged through his shirt. He got to camp about 45 minutes after I did, and I was at my comfortable, light breathing pace.
nether··on Oldest Fossils of Homo Sapiens Found in Morocco
We live in a computer simulation.
nether··on Alex Honnold Scales El Capitan Without Ropes, and the Climbing World Reels
You think that's crazy, check out El Cap relative to the Empire State Building: http://www.supertopo.com/inc/photo_zoom.php?dpid=Ojw4NjopKCA...,
nether··on Many Colleges Fail to Improve Critical-Thinking Skills
Well, I'm a product of this system, so I'm not sure what I'm missing out on.
nether··on L.A.'s crisis: High rents, low pay, and $2k doesn't buy much

nether··on Stop trying to ‘be original’ and be prolific instead (2016)
Yes, ambition usually requires sacrifice. I think the odds of really making it are vanishingly small though. It could be like daytrading, where 1% actually succeed and 99% lose a lot of money and sleep. Most people would find those odds insane, yet articles like this promote chasing that far-off, remote chance of a payoff. Accepting an average life is for the sane and reasonable, just as investing in index funds means accepting average returns.
nether··on L.A.'s crisis: High rents, low pay, and $2k doesn't buy much
There are a lot of small towns that are very livable in the US. Most journalists are in big cities, so you don't hear of them written up, except for the occasional "meth town crisis" piece. I have a climber friend who bought some land in Quincy, California. He designed and built his own house, along with a guest house and garden. He and his family live a quiet life of outdoorsy pursuits, rock climbing and backcountry skiing, while enjoying the small town's community theatre and organic food co-op. Cherry trees line the streets, and they taste really good.
nether··on Stop trying to ‘be original’ and be prolific instead (2016)
I stopped caring about this type of ambition porn in my late twenties, and I'm a lot happier for it. I'm a lazy, average guy who will probably have a pretty average life. When I stopped being so "hungry," it opened up a world of tranquility and joy that had always been there.
nether··on On average, skipping college and investing tuition costs nets a higher return
Peeve of mine: spelling his name wrong. It's Buffett.
nether··on Surgery free, 3D printed implants
I asked about this five months ago, and was told my theory was "asinine," and that here was no conspiracy.

I'd be curious to hear lancewiggs's views on this tech.

nether··on Fireflies
One of the things I miss from growing up in rural Virginia.
nether··on Paul Allen's new rocket-launching plane
Really interesting thing is the flat walls on the fuselages. They were done that way for ease of construction, and are not pressurized containers therefore don't suffer from stress singularities at the corners.
nether··on UK survey of 14-24-year-olds indicates social networks harm mental health
My friends started out on Instagram posting simple things about their lives, like a local pond with ducks, or a meal they made at home. Now it's like they only post the really outstanding stuff, adventure/travel or extravagant meals at high end restaurants. And they go crazy with tags, doing the dot dot dot thing followed by a tag block. While the new stuff is cool, I felt they were more relatable and more like friends when they just posted the mundane stuff which honestly makes up 90% of our lives.

> For all the intellectual firepower of people in the tech community, there is a curious strain of anti-intellectualism that comes forth in projects like this; an eagerness to discount the expertise of people who have studied a subject for their entire lives, just because they weren't CS majors. It's like trying to send a man to the moon without working with any aerospace engineers. I honestly do not understand it.

nether··on Top 20 Most Sold and Most Read Books of the Week
The only place that book will go is the dumpster or local used book store.
nether··on A new sort of hedge fund relies on crowd-sourcing
One of Quantopian's studies shows that backtesting poorly predicts live trading results: https://blog.quantopian.com/using-machine-learning-to-predic.... From the forums, it looks like 90% of the effort is devoted to getting a good backtest, a yardstick which might not have any bearing on reality. How do real quant traders deal with this discrepancy?
nether··on Ask HN: What do you use Machine Learning for?
As a guy who's going into ML, I'm worried about AI and products like DataRobot clobbering the market for data scientists. DataRobot gets glowing reviews for automating the setup of dozens of ML models, replacing weeks of effort by teams of ML specialists. It's very expensive though.
nether··on Hyundai Whistle-Blower, in Rarity for South Korea, Prompts Recall
At least in aerospace, the 2,000 hr spec comes up often as a reasonable service life. We could make everything last forever, but that usually means beefier, heavier parts. How much more in fuel per flight hour are you willing to pay for a product that lasts longer? What about decreased range? Also, how much of a unit cost increase will you accept to pay for larger chunks of aerospace aluminum? Tradeoffs are necessarily driven by consumer demands.
