nestorherre··on Ask HN: What are some deep, mentality changing books?
A book doesn't guarantee you that dragons are real, but surely teaches you how to kill them.
nestorherre··on Corona Labs is shutting down, will open-source everything under MIT
Back in 2013 I used corona and lua to help me make a game for android, which I needed to make in order to pass a class in college. Have to say that it was extremely easy to do, way better and easier than what my teacher taught me to do in Android.

Hope that it continues living and improving.

nestorherre··on Huge success in business is largely based on luck: new research
Came in to post this, left satisfied. However, I like to add to the end: "...and you act upon it"
nestorherre··on More Than 750M Worldwide Would Migrate If They Could
"I've worked in this industry for a while, helping people immigrate to Canada"

You still working in this? Would like to have a chat if possible.

nestorherre··on How we pay attention changes the shape of our brains
Thought exactly the same, too lazy to write it though. After some time of thinking about a proper logical argument of why and how the secret works, it's just because your mind is focused mostly on that thing that you're wishing for, and you start picking up cues all around from the real world.
nestorherre··on How to Read Self-Help
Thanks for the heads up. Checking it out atm and it seems valuable.
nestorherre··on Procrastination is about managing emotions, not time
I can recommend reading the books Atomic Habits, Deep Work and Digital Minimalism. The biggest takeaway from all 3 imho is environment design [1] [2], explained best in Atomic Habits (but also "used" in the other 2).

Also I'd recommend the Pomodoro technique, which is quite useful for me.

nestorherre··on Thank HN: My SaaS paid my rent this month
Grats, sure this will motivate more than one on their path. Keep it up!
nestorherre··on Ask HN: What podcast(s) changed your life?
Not sure if it can be considered as "podcast" (more like interviews, with video), but imho London Real has the biggest concentration of high performers in one place. Lots of the interviews have teached me a lot of valuable things. Highly recommended.

nestorherre··on Show HN: Store your luggage in local shops
How do you protect the customer in the case that somehting inside the luggage get lost? Or what if they claim that they lost something, but it just bs and want to rip off the store owner/your platform?
nestorherre··on Ask HN: Not resting fully because can't sleep long enough
This. Only have good things to say about CBT-i. Worked wonders for me.

Also I can second doing physical excercise.

nestorherre··on Back pain is a problem which is badly treated
I used to suffer from constant lower back pain through almost all my life, not anymore. Regular excercise and most specifically, strengthening my core (this should be prioritized), has left me with almost non existant back pain.

A while ago the pain got so severe that I could barely walk and this lasted for a couple of weeks until I got treatment. I got diagnosed with L5 Sacralization [1]. The treatment consisted of physiotherapy excercises, which focused mostly on using resistance bands.

Hope this helps anyone.

nestorherre··on Thinking Fast and Slow, Deep Learning, and AI [video]
I had to put it down at around 30% but not for your same reason, but because I just found it badly redacted (boring for me to keep going). However, I believe that the info is quite compelling and useful, but might need another style.
nestorherre··on Ask HN: What has your work taught you that other people don't realize?
If that's what you think you should be able to say it. Otherwise one or both of the next things are true: -You married the wrong girl -You need to regain your manhood

On the other hand, you do need to look for a good time and a good way to say it, and that just goes to being empathetic and caring about your partner.

nestorherre··on Show HN: Write a private diary using good old email
This. Pretty well done OP, congrats and good luck.
nestorherre··on How to be successful (at your career, Twitter edition)
"A man is a success if he gets up in the morning and goes to bed at night and in between does what he wants to do"

Bob Dylan

nestorherre··on How to be successful (at your career, Twitter edition)
"Good Luck is what happens when Preparation meets Oportunity".

And I would add to that "...oportunity, and you act upon it". Internal locus of control fella.

nestorherre··on Ask HN: What niche blogs are worthwhile to follow?
https://dariusforoux.com/ on productivity, self improvement.

https://fs.blog/ mental models, critical thinking.

nestorherre··on Ask HN: Have you found success and a good work life balance?
That's probably in the US bubble. A lot of us that pass your checklist but live in developing countries are far, FAR away from that number.
nestorherre··on Effects of Intermittent Fasting on Health, Aging, and Disease [pdf]
This is gold, thanks.
nestorherre··on People who tend to be optimistic are likelier to live to 85 or more: study
Yep, so many things to be grateful of, but most of the people are just too "blind" to see them and acknowledge it. A gratitude journal is a really powerful tool.
nestorherre··on Who Was the Buddha?
This is a hell of a book, I read it last month and found it pretty powerful.

The main message that I got from it was that every road or path that people take in life is valid, everyone is different and have their own preferences and tastes and consecutively, not because you find the other paths "worse" or less worthy than yours it indeed means that they are, neither that those people are inferior to you.

Book should be read by way more people, specially by high arrogant ones who put down on others.

nestorherre··on Pythonic News – HN Clone
Not to hijack your thread OP, but since I found out of http://hckrnews.com/ I never went back to regular HN. Best way to use HN IMHO.
nestorherre··on Ask HN: Books you plan to read in 2020?
AH! So many books to read.. I always get excited when I see these type of threads (because I can get new worthy books to add to my list), but on the other hand I get depressed that it is pretty damn hard to catch up with everything that I want to read.

My list would be too long to post, but these are the ones next in line: - Meditations - Digital Minimalism - I Ching - Art of War - Tao Te King - Steppenwolf - Think and grow rich

In general want to focus on books of: business, leadership, self development, productivity and spiritualism (mostly buddhism).

nestorherre··on Tell HN: I grew Visa List to $5k per month in a year
Congrats, this surely will inspire more than one fellow HNer to start his side project.

Also great thing that you answer such specific questions like how to get started on design/seo. Keep it up!

nestorherre··on Ask HN: Favorite Nonfiction Books of 2019?
These 2 look good, will check them out.
nestorherre··on Happy Hues – Curated colors in context
Thought exactly the same. The end result is pretty amazing.
nestorherre··on What are your options for cognitive enhancement?
I didn't think about proccesed carbs until now, but just coincidencially yesterday I had a hamburger combo for lunch and heavy processed bread at night, and I woke up feeling like sh1t today.

Now that I read these comments and looked up some info, I feel like I found a mistery and that things got clearer, just like sorting out the "secret" as you say.

Already got the benefits of excercising regularily and last week jumped into the IF wagon (still having mood issues, hope it subsides soon), will for sure try out reducing processed carbs and hope to get feeling even better everyday.

Thank you both!

nestorherre··on AI is the new co-writer
This is just awsome. I from time to time write speeches and sometimes I struggle trying to get to the next idea, this will surely help.
nestorherre··on Ask HN: Are Startups similar to college admissions?
Thanks for the comment and the book recommendation, will read.
