nekoashide··on Uber posts first quarterly net profit
Spending more time ordering, waiting, getting with customer support when things go south? I can go get my food without the extra cost and headache and that's what happened to our house.

We stopped ordering food once it got to be more of an inconvenience than picking it up.

nekoashide··on ‘World of Warcraft’ players trick AI-scraping website into publishing nonsense
Or pay to buy a trusty AI to help you
nekoashide··on Kevin Mitnick has died
Nobody really cared in the scene about the DMCA until the FBI started taking people offline. Even then? It stopped nobody, people just got more security aware.
nekoashide··on A 286 running like a 386? (2021)
And now I know why that weird version of DOS existed a few decades ago when I was working on cash registers. Back then you ran across a lot of DOS compatible OS's and documentation. As long as all the same commands worked you were usually fine.
nekoashide··on FDA fully approves first drug to slow down Alzheimer's disease
What causes Alzheimers? Is it beta-amyloids or something else? They have seen some improvements by removing them but the science isn't really clear. Ultimately some benefit is good but we have also seen the cost of these drugs and it's very expensive for little hope.

I think the approval is just that, approving something that has some therapeutic benefit that outweighs the negatives. And something that moves the needle is better than nothing.

nekoashide··on I'm a paid user of Threads[.com] – No trademark?
Meta had a product previously called Threads, there's lots of companies called Apple. They are billed as a slack replacement and not a twitter replacement. I'm not seeing the issue.
nekoashide··on Threads already has over 95M posts
This was intentional to build the platform out on day one and do as much damage to twitter as possible. I'm sure they will break out the platform but every ig user can get a threads account with a few clicks.
nekoashide··on Mid-1990s Sega document leak shows how it lost the second console war to Sony
People in the scene thought the DMCA was a joke back in 2000, then they ended up behind bars.
nekoashide··on False 911 Calls Increase During Festival as iOS Mistakes Dancing for Car Crashes
It must be from slam dancing, moshing, ect. Sometimes it can get down right violent but most people are respectful but I can see how it can be set off and ignored as bodies are being slammed around.
nekoashide··on Volvo Cars Adopts Tesla's NACS Port in the United States, Canada and Mexico
It needed to happen, between the existing Tesla network and the IIJA upcoming spending on a charging network it will make EV adoption happen much faster. Competing standards only hurts the consumers and will slow EV adoption.
nekoashide··on CEO: Raspberry Pi stock to hit 1M units monthly, starting in July
Home projects, I need a couple for home automation.
nekoashide··on Some models of Gigabyte motherboards download firmware updates insecurely
In the past OEMs would put passwords on motherboard BIOS, they were usually default codes but kept customers people from pushing F1 on boot and getting in to do bad things easily.
nekoashide··on Tesla Model Y overtakes Corolla to be world’s best-selling car in 2023
I watched Doug DeMuro latest video on the ID.4 and he says it's not fast. On one hand performance might not be needed for a people mover. On the other hand people expect EV's to have superior performance.
nekoashide··on Reddit will begin charging for access to its API
Top upvoted comments can filter out the useless information and then it can be trained on actual data and refined.
nekoashide··on Current causes of death in children and adolescents in the United States (2022)
The pandemic changed a lot of things, more and more people purchased guns for protection, and fentanyl drug abuse is a massive issue right now and has been for years.
nekoashide··on 3dfx: So powerful it’s kind of ridiculous
It wasn't just graphics, it was audio as well. People have it nice now but back then you were still fighting audio driver issues. AC'97 support made that situation livable but it took forever for everyone to support it.
nekoashide··on More than half of YC startups don't have a dot com
That first line got me, everyone used to have ringtones and one day I just left my phone on vibrate and never turned it back on.

Funny fact about me is that a certain Motorola ringtone from the mid 2000's will trigger a panic attack, old TV shows especially. And that's why I have a rule to pass the on-call to the next person in rotation if someone had a really bad night.

nekoashide··on Apple orders entire supply of TSMC's 3nm chips for iPhone 15 Pro and M3 Macs
That's just it, being first to the market is sometimes more important than worrying about competitors. They killed it so hard with the ipod that even if the zune was a better device at the time people wanted the ipod.
nekoashide··on For some electric vehicle owners, recharging now more costly than filling up
Energy has always been a convertible resource, the markets take time to catch up and I think we will start seeing pricing parity between gasoline and electricity.
nekoashide··on OpenSSL Security Advisory [7th February 2023]
The CA/B forum lost a lot of credibility with me, the vote failed and it took a single member (Apple) to tell everyone else that they were going to ignore the vote and proceed anyways.

No debate, no re-vote, no giving anyone any extra time or warning.

nekoashide··on State Farm says 105 Kia, Hyundai models ‘ineligible’ for new insurance in LA
They want evidence an immobilizer is installed, so with a simple modification people can get insured. But I'm not sure the government can force an insurance company to cover a vehicle anyways.
nekoashide··on Rivian to lay off 6% of its workforce as EV price war concerns grow
I have been waiting for a 3 row, 300mi range and under 40k vehicle. That's how I replace my minivan.
nekoashide··on Forthcoming OpenSSL Releases 3.0.8, 1.1.1T and 1.0.2zg
Sorry, should have been more clear, AL 2022

https://docs.aws.amazon.com/linux/al2022/ug/compare-al2-to-A...

nekoashide··on Forthcoming OpenSSL Releases 3.0.8, 1.1.1T and 1.0.2zg
I was told OpenSSL 3 was bad for the longest time, I used 1.1x for everything, but switched to Libressl.

Now that I need to switch to AWS Linux they are using OpenSSL 3, my question is should I still be hating on OpenSSL?

nekoashide··on Backblaze Drive Stats for 2022
Any more special treatment than they give AWS, GCP or Azure? I feel they just manufacture them all the same because there's no point in doing anyone any favors.
nekoashide··on Is AM radio dead?
Had it for years on the road for work and it was a life saver, never having to search for stations and listening to ads all the time. When I started working local I dropped it for streaming and that was good enough.

A few years later I was taking a multi state trip and reactivated, when I got back I re-subbed both vehicles. It's any kind of radio with almost no interruptions and it's worth the price.

nekoashide··on U.S. military-run slot machines earn $100M a year from service members
It's the government, you may as well have another set of people observing the test givers as well.
nekoashide··on Honey consumption improves blood sugar and cholesterol levels, study suggests
I would expect that there's something else at play, it's entirely possible that natural honey contains some organic chemical that increases metabolism in humans.
nekoashide··on Highway EV charging will soon need a ton of power
Gas Stations make money off the merchandise, the margins for gas at the station level are not that great.
nekoashide··on Highway EV charging will soon need a ton of power
Those tanks are huge boat anchors for the owners, your either a gas station owner or paying to have those tanks pulled and the soil tested.
