neilellis··on Lowercase – A simple way to take and share notes
Congratulations, looks like a cool app, I'm hoping I'll eventually catch up with being feature rich like yours. I've only just started, being hacking on it for a month now but am looking to do something pretty similar. I think we've had a few ideas the same - and amrescratching the same itch. Your 4 years ahead though :-) :-) https://edit-this.page/help is my humble work in progress.

Best of luck to you all!

neilellis··on Show HN: Edit-This.Page – Instant Publishing, Zero Friction
And it's gone! If you refresh the page Chris it won't do that anymore.

I'll put an optional anonymous filter on the pushes/timeline pages to avoid spam.

I should have said you can always share, just share the URL to the page. A push is like an advertised change within the app. But it was poor communication on my part.

Thanks for the feedback, it's very, very welcome.

Perfectly reasonable feedback, that warning doesn't actually need to be there.

One sec!

neilellis··on Show HN: CrowdTune - Gamified Crowdsourcing of Fine-Tuning Data for LLMs
Hi, this is an absolute MVP of an idea for a gamified means of crowdsourcing fine tuning data for independent LLMs.

I will soon be adding: categories, tags and voting. Later features will including discussions and custom queries for exporting data.

neilellis··on Sparks of Artificial General Intelligence: Early Experiments with GPT-4
[This is in reply to the comments not the article!]

It's just a statistical model is the logical equivalent of human beings are just a bunch of atoms.

The amount of reductionist thinking that goes on in tech is hilarious. First define AGI then challenge an AI to meet those requirements. If it meets them it is AGI. Put aside your preconceptions of what technology you think is required to achieve the goals and stay empirical.

Note previous definitions of AI have been thrown away as AI passes through them one by one :-)

What goes on inside its 'head' is irrelevant. We still don't know what actually goes on inside our heads and we were damn sure we were intelligent long before we had a clue how our heads worked at all.

Also sentience != AGI. We can't even agree what sentience is in humans and other living beings so I'd stay clear of that one for now :-)

neilellis··on What Will Transformers Transform?
It can only predict words, is like saying all neuron's are just switches, all matter is just protons, electrons and neutrons.

It's just reductive. What we're seeing from LLMs is simply amazing considering what they are supposed to just do.

Whatever LLMs are capable of, big or small it exceeds such reductive thinking as 'it predicts words'.

neilellis··on What Will Transformers Transform?
I think people are getting confused withe the human brain's number of synapses. That's why that number is a 'magic' number.
neilellis··on The genie escapes: Stanford copies the ChatGPT AI for less than $600
Wow, Stanford's Alpaca AI project is a real game-changer. The fact that it performs on par with ChatGPT but costs less than $600 to build is both exciting and terrifying. Sure, it's great to see AI becoming more accessible, but it's also a massive wakeup call for the potential misuse of these technologies.

We've got big names like OpenAI, Google, Apple, Meta, Baidu, and Amazon putting in serious time and money to ensure their language models are safe and ethical. However, now that we know it's possible to build powerful AI models on a budget, it's crucial to think about what this means for the future of AI regulation and safety.

This Alpaca AI project is a stark reminder that we need to have a serious conversation about the possible repercussions of AI proliferation. We can't just sit back and assume the big companies will take care of everything. The genie is out of the bottle, and it's time for everyone in the tech community to face the music and take responsibility for the AI revolution.

It's actually very good.
neilellis··on My mindfulness practice led me to meltdown (2021)
Yep that's what an intense panic attack feels like. Literally the worst experience you can imagine. His description matches my own worst experiences. And yes it would freak anyone out.

Guess how I overcame them :-) yep, you guessed, meditation - but it took time. I no longer have panic attacks but it was not a smooth journey. I also made big life changes and spent a lot of time in nature, coupled with medications.

On reflection I was pushing myself hard and was filled with ego - I'd had difficulties in the past before I started meditating and was massively overworking myself. A crash was inevitable. I am humbled by what I passed through - and that in itself is a victory.

Do I think meditation 'caused' the panic attacks, no, it brought to the surface something that was pretty much inevitable because of how I was living my life. Should I have treated meditation more respectfully and seriously. Yes, for sure.

Meditation is not a miracle drug, a panacea or a therapy. It should be viewed as the journey out of suffering - and that path by its very nature is likely to confront you with difficult experiences. If I can offer a tip or two from my own experiences :-

AGAIN: Meditation is not a miracle drug, a panacea or a therapy.

Serious meditation is a serious endeavour, like free-climbing. You should never take it lightly and you must be serious about it. When you take something seriously you do so with awareness of the dangers and the hardships you may face.

You may have genuinely very difficult experiences as the OP did, that is why it's important to have an experienced and wise Teacher. They can help you face these experiences and help you to grow stronger by doing so.

Take your time, the path is a long path, don't try for Nibbana by Tuesday, instead look for small concrete improvements and build on them over time. Be humble and realise that you have a lot of stuff to deal with and it takes time.

NEVER EVER lie, omit or exaggerate on an application form. This is how meditation teachers determine the risk of you having an experience you can't deal with. This was mentioned in the article, but I can say for sure that the teachers of Goenka retreats do try their hardest to not accept people on causes who might have difficulties. They also do drill in the idea that it's a serious undertaking.

If you have a difficult experience and can face it, even a little, your mind is stronger for it. The next time it happens maybe you can face it a little more.

I hope this article does not put people off meditation, it turned my life around. But at the same time, I hope people can take away the seriousness of such endeavours as the article does highlight.

When something that over a 100,000 people a year do any activity there will always be a tragic story. Be it running a marathon, boating or driving cars. Of course we should do everything possible to avoid that happening. But we do need to be realistic and acknowledge that tragedies do happen even when people have the mental equivalent of a driving license, air bags, seat belts and drive carefully.

Wishing you all happiness.

A competitor to Google News is great. The main problem I have with Google News is that it is always a few steps behind Twitter. It's really good if you're out of the loop, but behind the times if you're tracking a new story.

neilellis··on Google Memo Author James Damore Talks to Jordan Peterson [video]
Wouldn't it be so much better if the 'flagged' message would say 'flagged as offtopic' like Stack Overflow ...

Then at least we can be reminded that that's the main reason for flagging.

I realise the irony ...

neilellis··on The fired Google engineer wrote his memo after he went to a 'shaming' programme
Naive and privileged person starts flamewar based on their calmly reasoned explanation of why their privileged group are inherently better suited to do their job than other less privileged group; after attempts to show them that they are indeed privileged and that others may also be as competent.

Due to intense backlash said naive and privileged person joins angry privileged people on a road to genuine hatred. All the while claiming that they are the underprivileged group.

sigh
