needacig··on Sexism in Tech: Don’t Ask Me Unless You’re Ready to Call Someone a Whistleblower
She explains that she could not have reported the rape without destroying most of her personal and professional relationships, because the perpetrator was someone who was central in her social circles (possibly even considered a friend before that).

See her comment here: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=9168542

I think this is pretty common and is why many rapes go un-reported. Reporting some criminal stranger on the street who jumps you seems like a no brainer to me, but reporting someone you thought was a friend and who is friends with most of your friends? I bet a lot of people decide it's not worth upending their lives and starting over for.

needacig··on New HPV shot covers a wider range of cancers. Make sure your adolescent gets it
It would be great to know if this is still useful to get as an adult older than the age 26 mentioned in the article.
needacig··on Ask HN: Have any Mexicans ever been accepted into Y Combinator?
I think you're reading too much into the question. It's not really ambiguous -- he is asking if any citizens of Mexico been accepted to Y-combinator. It's a yes or no question that could be answered more fully with a single number. If you wanted to answer it more broadly you could consider immigrants from Mexico too.
needacig··on When Children with Autism Grow Up
"if the species had to rely completely on neurotypicals, we'd still be living in caves and wearing hides"

That's incredibly rude and condescending, and patently untrue.

needacig··on The IUD: The Best Form of Birth Control is the One No One is Using
Funny, on my FB feed just last week a woman posted an X-ray or some such image with the caption "perforated uterus due to IUD migration" and another woman commented on her photo that it had happened to her too. I don't know how rare it is but that possibility alone would be enough to make me turn and run the other way. At least condoms generally won't perforate your internal organs.
needacig··on Ask HN: What IM services do you use?
Adium connected to Google Talk and AIM. It's possible to connect other chat services but I don't.

needacig··on I've been programming since I was 10, but I don't feel like a "hacker"
Thank you for saying something this time. I agree this "impressionability is a character flaw" business is bull. As if reacting badly to other people behaving negatively toward you and excluding you is something only worthless people do. As if humans don't have profound effects on other humans through their words and actions. As if the author is somehow above being in anyway influenced by other humans. I'm sure he's not, but he wants you to think so.

You have explained perfectly what I also believe. My experience supports this. I wish I could upvote you more.
needacig··on Ask HN: Great Idea but Cannot Implement...Yet
"Don't worry about people stealing your ideas. If your ideas are any good, you'll have to ram them down people's throats." -- Howard Aiken

I'd add to that, that there are many, many examples of successful products that are successful not because they were the first to do it, but because they executed well and grew a large and supportive user base. It's very likely your idea has already been done, just not very well. As a professor of mine always said, "there are no new ideas under the sun."

needacig··on Technology and the Position of Women by John McCarthy
Props to you for owning up to being a sexist. I am too. Pretty much everyone has sexist and racist biases. It's the sea we swim in. I wish more people would face up to it like you. Some conversations would be easier if people didn't get their feelings so hurt by being called sexist.
needacig··on Brain connections may explain why girls mature faster
"And Darwinian evolution has been cited as justification for letting the poor starve. So what?"

So that's f*cked up. Those people should not do that. And that kind of reasoning is not even good scientific reasoning, which is my point in the first place. What's yours?

needacig··on Brain connections may explain why girls mature faster
Why do you make the implicit assumption that innate performance gaps (in things like math and editing prose especially) fall along gender lines? A better null hypothesis is that there is no connection between gender and these skills.

By the way, I'm sorry you felt mistreated by teachers because of your gender. That's wrong.

"On the other hand, that's a tyrannical society which forcibly boosts girls and women at the expense of boys and men."

First of all, as others have pointed out, equality does not mean forcing everyone to have equal abilities. Equality means not pre-judging anyone's abilities based on irrelevant characteristics like sex or race. Second of all, arguments like yours always clue me off that the person making the argument is operating under the default assumption that boys and men are better than women and girls in general and that assuming that they just might be equal for any given task until proven otherwise is tyranny. Let me guess: MRA?

``Differences in biology'' are consistently cited as justification for sexist beliefs. (An example of a sexist belief is, ``women are better suited to careers requiring nurturing and communication over logic and leadership.'') You are correct that this article did not imply an ordering in its findings, but given that men dominate higher prestige social and professional positions globally, people are constantly searching for justifications of this that seem ``fair'' to them: biology. It is primarily men who are presidents and scientists and CEOs and leaders of families and religions. Why? Because on average, they're just better at it. Because biology. Or so they say. When small differences are desperately sought out, and vast similarities are ignored, all to justify what is arguably an inequitable situation, I'm wary. Scientific sexism and scientific racism are not new. The findings of the scientific process are not immune from the bigotries of its practitioners and the era in which they live. Science is a process, not an outcome.

"I don't know why the notion of different brain chemistry is so threatening to some groups, but it is what it is."

Maybe because such notions have historically been and still are used to justify biases that underly sexist behavior such as that studied here: http://news.wustl.edu/news/Pages/6414.aspx

This is just a modern day spin on phrenology (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phrenology). Remember how scientists once looked for a link between face symmetry and criminality? Good times.

tl;dr More "proof" that men are biologically superior to women.

needacig··on Would you take smart drugs to perform better at work?
+1 for experiencing negative effects on memory after a while. I had that too.
needacig··on Would you take smart drugs to perform better at work?
+1 to feeling more sociable while on these drugs. Whether that is a good thing depends on your personal preferences. I don't generally like being talkative and I don't really like talkative people, so in retrospect, I don't appreciate that side-effect.
needacig··on Would you take smart drugs to perform better at work?
I've taken Modafinil in the past for this reason, for about six months. It made me temporarily more productive, alert, and able to focus (for the first two months, I'd say), but then I started to become habituated and the effect wasn't the same. When I was on it, I slept and ate much less. I am not sure I could have slept or ate more if I wanted to. At first, it made me feel so anxious that I could hardly exist around other people. I remember my first conversation with my roommate while I was on it. My heart nearly exploded and my brain froze. I had a terrifying experience driving around that first day too. (Lesson learned: do not try new drugs and drive!) But that went away after a day or so, and then I behaved more recklessly. I felt more aggressive and on edge. I think I felt more confident, temporarily. I became highly talkative (for me, at least). I drank a lot, at least for the first three or so months. One possible theory is that it induced a higher heart rate, which made me feel anxious, which made me want to drink more. I also smoked a lot more (cigarettes). I found that my memory was not as good after several months of taking this -- this could be due in part to its interference with my sleep, and in part due to the drinking, although I can't say for sure if I drank markedly more during that time than other times in my life. I don't really think so though. I actually got the worst grades that I have ever received in my life the semester I was on it (math and science courses). I stopped taking it soon after. Granted, I was dealing with a number of other issues then, so this was hardly a controlled experiment, and the effects I experienced could have been due to a number of other lifestyle factors. In addition, there could have been a drug quality issue. We'll never know. But my sense for these kinds of drugs after that experience is that it is not healthy for me and I would not do it again. I wouldn't even take it as a once-in-a-while all-nighter work-cramming thing, unless I was, say, in a multi-day gun battle, which is a very unlikely scenario. For me, I find that maintaining good mental health, working consistently, eating well, getting eight hours of sleep, and exercising makes me a much more productive, happy, and mentally sharp human being. I think it is difficult to use drugs to improve yourself unless you have serious issues to begin with and/or you really know what you're doing. If you're going to try it, make sure you plan ahead and have ample discipline, data, and possibly, expert supervision.

Interestingly, before experimenting with Modafinil, my friends and I used to sometimes take Adderall and similar drugs recreationally, because we found their effect to be quite similar to cocaine.

EDIT: Feel free to ask me more about this experience if you're curious.

needacig··on GitHub Résumé
This is dumb. It merely duplicates the exact same information that is available front and center on everyone's GitHub profile to begin with, but in a worse format. Only idiot VCs would think this is cool or useful.
