nedt··on The Golden Age of Japanese Pencils (2022)
In Japan numbers have meaning. Haiku have a 5-7-5 pattern - which gives you 17 as a sum. And saying the number 17 in Japanese sounds like youth and vitality. Might not be so odd after all.
nedt··on Executive wealth as a factor in return-to-office
I'm just somewhere in the middle doing engineering management, so I'm already talking a lot to people in meetings, but I really enjoy doing it from home. Much easier to do something on the side or in between of all the none work related stuff (like cooking lunch). In half of the meetings we wouldn't be able to meet those people directly anyway with us being in different countries or even continents.
nedt··on European word translator: an interactive map
I can mostly speak for German. It seems to mix them all into one general language. But there are a lot of local differences between north and south of Germany, Switzerland and Austria. And it’s not just dialect, but really different words that might not be understood everywhere. If you look at the english part it has at least three different words. Similar in Spanish.
nedt··on Moving on from 18F
I do work for a US company from outside the US and if I can't identify the people I'm talking to I have to hang up. We have yearly training on the importance of not sharing internals if not authorized.

In that case I'd ask them for the full name so I can look them up and call them back. But I also wouldn't be scared of getting fired for that, quite the opposite I'd also happily resign if they ask me to talk to random people about internals.

nedt··on Apple software update “bug” enables Apple Intelligence
Here in Europe we aren't even allowed to enable it. Not even as a beta tester.
nedt··on To buy a Tesla Model 3, only to end up in hell
All of that is happening in the EU. Don't you just have the warranty were they either fix it (which they don't) or exchange with a new car that doesn't have the issue or you return the car and get the money back. After all the defect was known an existed by the time you were buying it. Doesn't make sense to waste time.
nedt··on Everyone knows your location: tracking myself down through in-app ads
But that latitude and longitude might still be the middle of some city or country and not an exact location. It's not really clear how close it is.
nedt··on Everyone knows your location: tracking myself down through in-app ads
Just check https://ipinfo.io/ to see how close your IP points to your location. For most targeted content the city is good enough. And honestly if I'm one of 1 million people it's ok.
nedt··on Everyone knows your location: tracking myself down through in-app ads
We might not be the same. Every time someone asks for tracking anything I complain and question a lot. People hate me, but if there is no real use case for storing all information we can get I will veto as much as I can.

The IT folks working in the advertising industry are much more the "who cares, everyone has all our data already anyway".

nedt··on Stats – macOS system monitor in your menu bar
Oh yeah using that since I had my Powerbook. Must be 20 years. So happy that the fork exists and keeps it running.
nedt··on Tailwind CSS v4.0
I'm learning math with my kid and it's not different to what I learned. Can still solve everything quickly.

On the other hand there are those posts on social media mixing multiplication and division and telling you there is only one true answer to those. Tailwind isn't that bad, but it's more into this direction for me as an old fart ;)

nedt··on UK's hardware talent is being wasted
The cost of living thing is debunked very quickly, but I think it's missing some aspects. I'm not in UK, but just on Europe main land, but I can easily pay for my flat, don't need a car for anything, while still living pretty much in the city center, should I lose my job I still get payed while looking for another job, should I get sick I can also just go to a doctor or the hospital and pay up to nothing, my kids just go to kindergarten and school also with paying up to nothing. At the very least most of that is not true for the US. So earning less is okish. Of course I'd also love to get more. But it's not as much needed as it might be in the US.
nedt··on Please don't force dark mode
I even more so would need a switch for anything on my screen, not just websites, including screen sharing. It's fine for anyone having a preference, but I like light-mode and being in a well-lit environment for work, if not even outside. When then someone shares their screen in dark-mode I can read nothing.
nedt··on Please don't force dark mode
At least on iOS there is beside the normal dark mode also some kind of simulated dark mode that inverts everything that's still light, expect images. There same is not available for people preferring light mode.
nedt··on Please don't force dark mode
Beside it not being true for paper it's also not true for electronic screens. Before a computer with CRT most of us had some simpler screens on calculators or other devices that were LCDs. And they are blackish on some lighter gray or green - light mode.
nedt··on Why is homeschooling becoming fashionable?
My kid has a really hard time learning from me. It's resistance and stress for both of us. After all my role is to be a parent so naturally I'm a friend and a foe. Much more than a teacher. But I also don't have a big problem with that.

Obviously he also has his challenges in school. It's a public school but in Austria, so it ain't that bad. But there is also the saying that you aren't learning for school, you are learning for life.

So you aren't just learning for your subject, you are also learning to get along with people, how to avoid conflicts, how to manipulate a bit and how to trick some of the systems. All of that is not so much possible in homeschooling.

People do know that around here and it's more of a distrust into the system that might parents want to get their kids not taught in school in recent years, while their thinking behind the distrust does make them very bad teachers overall.

nedt··on Write a Shell in C (2015)
This so reminds me of the command line I've added to a little fun tool I wrote in Borland C ~25 years ago. It was a strobe light using your monitor and I wanted something to fine tune the timings and color so I sat down a whole afternoon and added a command line interface including line editing and history. So much fun!
nedt··on What happened to the world's largest tube TV? [video]
There is mostly one thing I still remember about tube TV and one reason why I', so happy they are gone. It's the high pitch noise they make. Even now over 40 I'm still able to hear it. Can't imagine how it must be if everything is bigger.
nedt··on Charset="WTF-8"
In HTML if you use <input type="email"> you basically get a regex validation. While it not fully follows the RFC it's a good middle ground. And it gives you an email that you can use on the internet (RFC obviously has some cases that are outside of this scope). That's why I tend to prefer what's defined in the standard: https://html.spec.whatwg.org/multipage/input.html#email-stat...
nedt··on Frosted glass from games to the web
Back then it was just small enough for my ISDN modem. And there are even more images for the headers. But it's also nicely falling back to plain colored backgrounds so the issue of loading the images is not so big. Now I haven't fully checked the frosted glass demo, but shouldn't that even just have impact on the GPU? filter can be accelerated.
nedt··on Frosted glass from games to the web
Over 20 years ago Eric Meyer had a glass background done with CSS1 with a bit more texture but way less code https://meyerweb.com/eric/css/edge/complexspiral/glassy.html If for nothing else those old things on css/edge could at least be used as inspiration.
nedt··on Bocker: Docker implemented in around 100 lines of Bash (2015)
Two years ago I gave a presentation on how docker works under the hood. After trying to understand docker, moby and containerd and how they interact I was so happy to find Bocker. Pretty much show how it can be done while showing enough of the magic moves that docker itself is actually doing. Bocker is cups&balls with clear plastic cups by Penn and Teller for docker.
nedt··on PHP 8.4
Anything after 8.0 is not EOL. Security support for 8.1 is still provided by PHP itself until end 2025.
nedt··on PHP 8.4
If needed you can get LTS from Zend. They still offer security fixes for 7.2 until end of 2026 and 8.3 is supported until end of 2029. But that's just if upgrading every second or third year is too expensive to you.
nedt··on PHP 8.4
array_search() has the same needle, haystack order as in_array() or array_key_exists(). array_find() has a callback and takes the same order as array_walk() or array_filter(). It's just array_map() that's different, but that's because it can take multiple arrays. And writing your own function with a prefix already used by PHP in the global namespace is just not a very good idea.
nedt··on PHP 8.4
The dynamic form is really not needed very often. Should it ever become a problem triggering a loop you can just set and get from a private property with a different name. But then also 90% of getters and setters are really simple so it will feel as magic as gravity.
nedt··on A common urban intersection in the Netherlands (2018)
It's much easier if you also cycle or just walk. People in cars in a city is pretty weird, we just got way too much used to it.
nedt··on A common urban intersection in the Netherlands (2018)
That's also the case in other places. The reason is easy. Cycle paths are not build for cyclist, but to them away from the main street and not be an "obstacle" to cars.
nedt··on Bluesky is ushering in a pick-your-own algorithm era of social media
For Bluesky you start here: https://github.com/bluesky-social/pds
nedt··on Bluesky is ushering in a pick-your-own algorithm era of social media
Mastodon has never really risen. Bluesky has also users that aren't so technical and therefore attracts a lot more others. Good News is that they are more clients being created that can talk to Mastodon, Bluesky, but will also include RSS.
