nedt··on Europe's summer drought is so extreme that desertification is a growing threat
Funny. We have beavers in the Lobau in Vienna. But it's still dry. And yet we want to build a highway tunnel through it. Guess we just need more beavers. It's famous for it's naturism anyway.
nedt··on Europe's summer drought is so extreme that desertification is a growing threat
Too much about nuclear safety was based on trust and if that fails the consequences are huge. In Europe we learned the hard way what it means if a plant is not safely build and how bad the communication is when there is an accident.

And then you are also going to trust the same people when they are saying the waste issue is solved.

If your arguments are luddites and fearmongering you have not improved trust in any way.

nedt··on Hacking IKEA Furniture
Moved a pax twice and my kitchen once. You can disassemble them easily. Just reverse the instructions.
nedt··on As AI eats the web, the internet’s collective memory is disappearing
Google wasn't great for a very long time. Switched to Duckduckgo years ago. I just love the bangs, because I tend to go to sources I trust anyway.

Doesn't mean I'm not also using duck.ai. It makes searching faster and more targeted. But then it's still giving me links to verify and is actually more limited, which means less hallucination and more directly going to the sources. Also it avoids having to open five pages first which all either sell your data or want you to pay.

I don't see the web or the internet dying yet. Just a lot of people not using the right tools and having a harder time accessing what's useful. But that hasn't started with AI.

nedt··on Mars Bar from 1991 found – and it's 20g bigger than today's
Well disrespecting someone because of their cravings is indeed not contributing to the conversation. It's fine to ingest garbage once in a while. If you can make it less that's still better.
nedt··on How I use LLMs to learn complex topics
I'm just looking at the rocker engine piece. The belt is running backwards. That's the first thing I'd expect it to get right or flag if it doesn't. Human in the loop is also the quality control. If that fails the rest might have similar issues.
nedt··on Open-weight AI is having its Kubernetes moment
> Kubernetes did not win simply because its repository was public.

And here I am still using docker with compose because it's easier and works. Always saying I might be looking at swarm when needed, but then never really need it.

Just because you are using it doesn't mean everyone is and doesn't mean it has won. On the other hand yeah I want open models and I want them local as well.

nedt··on Building and shipping Mac and iOS apps without opening Xcode
They keys are stored in the secure enclave. You can't get them out. You can only let the secure enclave make calculations with it. And it needs your fingerprint to unlock.

Akamai akr should be able to do something similar, but would store the private key on your phone. It's the successor of krypton, which was bought by Akamai, and I liked that even more as you really need a second device.

nedt··on Never Give Them Your Face
It's an open and documented standard. There are open source implementation.
nedt··on Never Give Them Your Face
I can already generate a QR code that proofs my age anonymously. It's signed by the goverment. There are libraries to check the QR code. No extra device needed.
nedt··on Identity verification on Claude
At the very least I would expect them to support eID for everyone who can and doesn't want their 3rd party. Also much better than take a video of plastic card.
nedt··on Developers don't understand CORS (2019)
Exactly this. I can only upvote you once, but this is one article that should answer all the questions. Not just the simple origin case, but also how a preflight works.
nedt··on The AirPods Effect
Cars are only safer in a crash if you are inside the car. They are a big problem for anyone they crash into. That's why it's so very important that you see and hear everything happening around you. Why should the once with more mass and speed have the luxury of listening to music?
nedt··on The AirPods Effect
If that's illegal than cars with closed windows would be illegal too. Even more so if they have the radio on. As a cyclist I keep having issues with car drivers not hearing anything happening outside of their vehicle (not a bell, not yelling, not a bicycle hooter). That's like wearing headphones or earplugs and still is considered normal. I'd love if everyone would be required to drive a cabrio.
nedt··on Want your images back? That'll be $5
Just tried it out. The data download option in your account settings gives you the full resolution. You need no plan whatsoever.
nedt··on AI demands more engineering discipline. Not less
It's all about YAGNI. Programmers try to be smart covering cases no one thought about, reviewer is happy that corner cases have been implemented, artificial tests report all good. But it's just more to read when you have to change the code.
nedt··on AI demands more engineering discipline. Not less
That's still going to make it hard to read. I'd have one big comment above talking about the different cases and then one line of code. Even with the slightly higher risk of getting code and comment out of sync. But that context switch between code and comments you need when you read this one return are pretty awful.
nedt··on TIL: You can make HTTP requests without curl using Bash /dev/TCP
I actually have a couple of Dockerfiles that are using exactly this in the HEALTHCHECK. Less packages to install.
nedt··on Every Frame Perfect
I still remember that you could slow down animations in OS X - I think with the shift key. Steve Jobs even did it in presentations because they looked so gorgeous in slowmo. If we‘d still have that I‘m sure they would care more about that every frame.
nedt··on If you are asking for human attention, demonstrate human effort
AI is able to read input from AI. Humans are able to read input from humans. Also AI is pretty good in reading input from humans. So we don't really need AI -> AI. Just output for humans and you are fine. You can still attach details and this is true for both AI and humans. So human output should be the goal for everyone and everything.
nedt··on Ableton Extensions SDK
Yes of course. But then they wouldn’t be the first to create APIs, SDKs or CLIs as an enabler, because of AI. Which is why I‘m even more happy that it isn’t just a MCP.
nedt··on Ableton Extensions SDK
Yes Schwung is now the best. There is also the extending-move repo on github which has some documentation in the wiki. From time to time I look into the Abelton move reddit.
nedt··on Ableton Extensions SDK
The have it buried in the FAQ, but that's pretty much the interface for AI. And a really good one. You can use it with just your old human intelligence, but then you can also get help if coding isn't your thing.

Biggest issue with having something so easy to work with is the huge amount of extensions we will be getting, which makes it harder to find the jewels.

Also wondering if we will get extensions for Abelton Move as well. There are already a couple of hacks that are adding functions that are running as a sidecar. This could give them an official API.

nedt··on What Is a Dickover?
NOYB is working on it. I think for derstandard.at it was already declared illegally with the prices they have, but it’s still ongoing.

I like to call that a mafia tactic as the framing is normally „it would be a shame if we have to sell your personal data“.

nedt··on The worst job interview I ever had
Automattic, the company behind Wordpress, is so proud of they way they are working and the clear process for interviews. They invite you to a Slack channel, you get information before hand so you know exactly what they are looking for.

When I interviewed with them I've already worked with PHP for 20 years, even working on the Zend Framework, experiences in Javascript, HTML and CSS, leading projects for the longest time. But the interviewer I had seemed not to be interested very much. Shortly after the interview they threw me out of the channel, so I couldn't get to the information they shared yet they told me "Come back in a year when you are more experienced". Experienced in what? Well they never answered.

Of all interviews I had during that time they were the worst. Not really human. They saying "Automatticians are curious, driven, compassionate, tenacious, autonomous, friendly, independent, collaborative, communicative, supportive, self-motivated, and amazing with GIFs." I haven't even seen them posting a GIF.

nedt··on GPT Guesses Between 1 and 100
And if you look at the bar chart you'll see 69 is almost never picked, while 67 is almost as often as 42. The whole research might be written by AI without any human review.
nedt··on How to make your text look futuristic (2016)
But Star Wars isn't from the future. Does that mean there is a time loop in fonts?
nedt··on Software engineering may no longer be a lifetime career
Just stop calling everyone a software engineer. You can be a script kiddie, coder, developer - but all of those are not engineers. Engineering is much more than just writing the code. There is a reason why you can earn a degree in engineering - not saying a degree is automatically making you an engineer or that it's even needed.
nedt··on Using Claude Code: The unreasonable effectiveness of HTML
Have been working with HTML in decades and still it's quicker to write markdown for simple documents. Now if you'd have some middle ground that would be nice. And actually there are already things like Githubs Markdown which has more features, you can embed mermaid etc. Or you'd use something like MDX (which readme.com is using internally) where you mix in components when needed - those could even be based on something like bootstrap because you might like having cards and layouts. Now the only thing missing is support in the interface. Plain HTML can already be rendered, adding a more capable Markdown shouldn't be too hard.
nedt··on Bitwarden CLI compromised in ongoing Checkmarx supply chain campaign
But then at the same time you should always update because it might fix a security vulnerability. Otherwise you end up running nodejs 10 because you don't need the new stuff.
