nedt··on Modern Node.js Patterns
I was really trying to use deno but it still is not there yet. Node might not be the cool kid, but it works and if you get stuck the whole internet is here to help (or at least stack overflow).

We once reported an issue and it got fixed really quickly. But then we had troubles connecting via TLS (mysql on google cloud platform) and after a long time debugging found out the issue is actually not in deno, but in RustTLS, which is used by deno. Even a known issue in RustTLS - still hard to find out if you don't already know what you are searching for.

It was then quicker to switch to nodejs with a TS runner.

> repressing the urge to listen music

Have you seen how many car drivers can't resist to listen to music? They even drive with closed windows. It's even worse like having headphones on, because they don't hear people shouting before they hit them plus a car is faster and heavier. Let's start there for general safety.

nedt··on XMLUI
Also Mozilla did their app in real XML UI with XUL. But even they themself stopped using it after 20 years.
nedt··on Hyatt Hotels are using algorithmic Rest “smoking detectors”
„Smoke detectors don‘t lie“ might be true, but not everything they detect is always smoke.

In my building all flats have one. It gets triggered by workers cutting a hole in the wall or people cooking. We covered it when we had the fog machine for Halloween because that surely would have triggered it. Almost every time it went off it was a false alarm.

Which is also the second thing. It should never be silent. If it detects it needs to report audible and someone should come to your room. What happens if there is smoke because of a fire? We always had FD coming to our flat.

Algorithmic might sound smart but in the end it might just a boy that cries wolf.

nedt··on How does a screen work?
If the author is here.

Would be nice if you could give a hint on all the disabled chapters. Either a tooltip or even just a title attribute. Are they paid? Do I have to login? Not ready yet?

nedt··on How does a screen work?
It's much cooler if you haven't used it. That mass of a 19in was crazy. Then you had all of those that had the high pitched noise. And if you were unlucky you had to degauss them. Cool concept, but in practice the digital successors are better.
nedt··on I extracted the safety filters from Apple Intelligence models
I think it's in there so you can't let it generate an email reply about how awesome peppa pig is.
nedt··on "Microsoft Locked My Account – I Lost 30 Years of Photos and Work"
Yeah Microsoft can be pretty bad with that stuff. When my sons account, which was also what he used for Minecraft, was stolen I even reached out to a real person. Could they help us get the account back? No because they most protect the owner of the account. Which is even more crazy if you think about it because that would be my son and not the thief they gave the account to.
nedt··on Convert photos to Atkinson dithering
Don't click the "as follows" in the info dialog. Looks like this wasn't updated in a while and since then the link became NSFW.
nedt··on Eleven v3
I so feel everyone complaining about British English. For me as an Austrian it's very much the same with German.

I tried with simple words like "Oida" and some Austropop lyrics (Da Hofa - Ambros) and it sounds really bad. So even for words that are clearly Austrian.

nedt··on Covert web-to-app tracking via localhost on Android
Before you target 5 different cohorts it's better to target the context of where the ad is shown. i.e. web content normally already has a category and people reading an article about cheap flats in a city might be very much interested in renting or buying a flat. By collecting signals on a user you might only get that interested after a longer time, if you even have a profile, and by the time you pick it up they might have a new flat and are no longer interested.
nedt··on Covert web-to-app tracking via localhost on Android
I've seen it being used.

Like on the frontend side with Facebook which thinks if I'm interested into cycling I will also be interested in cars (both are on the street, right?) or if I'm interested in some more dirty humor I also want to see more "naughty" stuff.

And also on the backend used by magazines and they mostly don't use the user profiles because it's too targeted and doesn't have enough audience. And if you make the targeting broad enough you'll have again people interested in chocolate so you target them with wine and whiskey.

Or even better on Amazon where you can buy a new TV and when you have done so it will suggest you even more TVs for the next months.

nedt··on Covert web-to-app tracking via localhost on Android
It's already enough to just have plain ads. Like we have them on the streets, at the bus station, newspapers, etc. No tracking needed at all, just give out the message. If you need to target people to it in the context of the place or content you are showing it with. But you don't need to know anything about the user seeing the ad. Targeting by user doesn't work anyway.
nedt··on Have I Been Pwned 2.0
steve@apple.com has 82 breaches. Good that he gave it to his CEO decades ago.
nedt··on Have I Been Pwned 2.0
IIRC linkedin was one of the breaches where I got a spam email to my linkedin address, told them and they were like "can't be us - must be you who has been hacked". And then later "ah yeah was us, but no personal data was stolen". Like email address is not personal - lucky me for having a catch all domain and being able to just block the address I had used with linkedin.
nedt··on Minimum Viable Blog
Use wordpress headless and protected the backend so it can't be accessed publicly. Then you don't have to care so much about keeping it up to date.
nedt··on Try Switching to Kagi
Always needs an extension. That's not the same as just using Duckduckgo.
nedt··on Try Switching to Kagi
I'm actually happy with the duckduckgo results and also have a couple of bangs I use regularly. My biggest issue with using Kagi would be that I have to log in. I tend to clear cookies, either automated when closing a tab or by using a private browser, and would always have to relogin.
nedt··on The 12-bit rainbow palette
The beyond tellerrand conference had a pretty good talk on the different color models in CSS: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9UyJe22WH58
nedt··on Reverse geocoding is hard
Is it even worth it? What most of the users will be doing is enter the address in their map or route app of their choice to see on a map the directions. Especially for something that's inside a park an address is really not that useful, but also outside most people don't know where some specific house number is.

Also having zones might not be super useful. Like when I'm in a city next to the border of a district I wouldn't want to only search in my current district. Something on the other side of my current district might be much harder to reach than something in the neighboring district.

Giving a place nearby, like a landmark, can aid in finding interesting places, but in the end a simple radius search, or route distance search or even something next to a path, might be much more useful. Which is more or less what is being done when you visualize points on a map.

Staying closer to coordinates also gets rid of localization issues. And that's not just different languages and scripts but also how addresses are used worldwide. There are some important cultural differences.

nedt··on AnimeJs v4 Is Here
The one thing I'm missing is the brag page. Knowing GSAP I'd really like to see why it would be better. It doesn't have to be a fair comparison. Greensock can then say why they'd still be better. But as we do have options it would be nice to see where they match and where they differ.
nedt··on The <select> element can now be customized with CSS
Oh ... it's actually their own integrated translation that breaks it. Now that's funny. They aren't escaping correctly. Now if someone wants to play around with that ...
nedt··on The <select> element can now be customized with CSS
This is also very much how the page looks for me in Firefox. If it can't fail without issues it's not an option I'd select.
nedt··on Raising Kids to Have an Analog Childhood in a Digital World
The kids have either not yet or have recently started school. Of course the shouldn’t have TikTok or anything similar. On the tablet give them something for their age. But remind me in five years of this story and how it went. Pretty sure by then they will be as digital as the average kid.
nedt··on The Website Hacker News Is Afraid to Discuss
I always come via the algolia page to hackernews. Just get the most popular news in the last 24h: https://hn.algolia.com/?dateRange=last24h It looks like flagging doesn't affect the ranking there as long as it gained some traffic before that.
nedt··on The Worst Programmer I Know (2023)
That's easy to solve. When they ask me it might take an hour or two until I come back to them. If they were just trying to us me as a rubber duck the problem will have been solved by then. And it's not only devs. Also PMs have this behaviour. Sitting it out before asking what they need makes most question vanish.
nedt··on The Startup CTO's Handbook
Every junior has mentors and leaders that help them and that they can follow. As you grow you might become one of them. That's the reason why you then let others do all of the coding. It's not like you unlearn everything, but you let your team grow and become you in the end. It can be really satisfying. If you can't stop getting your hands dirty then maybe it's not for you (yet).
nedt··on Music labels will regret coming for the Internet Archive, sound historian says
It's not just labels who aren't getting the artistic side of music. Copyright collectives are just as bad. If you give away your music for free under a license like the creative commons they will still collect money for any public use. But they will then just give it to their commercial artists probably even breaking nc clauses in open content licenses.
nedt··on Apple Exclaves
The first iPhone didn't have an app store and the idea was to just use websites and later install webapps. On that there is no control whatsoever, so no I don't think the original idea was to lock down the devices for business value.
nedt··on The US stops sharing air quality data from embassies worldwide
I had Windows 95 running with just 4 MB of RAM. Obviously it kept swapping to disk. When shutting down it always crashed, because in the process it turned of swapping and couldn't run some of the drivers anymore. Even Microsoft support didn't know how to solve it. That thing was wild. After adding 16 MB of RAM I never had this issue again.
