nedbat··on Cog: Use Python in your source files to generate pieces of code (2021)
Have you read the other comments that show examples like inserting help output into your docs?
nedbat··on Where Did Everyone Go?
I hear complaints like this a lot, and it seems like a basic misunderstanding of Mastodon. It's not a place, and it's not a single service. It's a piece of software, run on thousands of instances by thousands of operators, and used by millions of people. "Mastodon is political" is like saying, "email is political." Find a different instance, and/or follow different people.
nedbat··on The myth of the myth of learning styles
Doesn't the original sentence cover your concern? "Learn how you learn."
nedbat··on The myth of the myth of learning styles
I also had replies on Mastodon, and a discussion in IRC, all of which were similar to the comment on the blog post: experts telling me that learning styles were a myth, and so therefore, "learn how you learn" was kind of bogus.

But yes, you got the point of the post: there are many fine ways to learn, and you have to choose the best one for you.

nedbat··on Python proposal (inspired by Lua)
Hey everyone, this was my proposal. Don't take it too seriously. I tossed it off on Mastodon, it's not a PEP or anything. Python isn't going downhill because of me!
nedbat··on Mastodon: Servers, Good and Bad
How do you feel about taking on a billion dollars of interest per year? Then fumbling new features to lose half the advertisers? What do you think of asking software engineers to bring screenshots of lines of code? It makes no sense.
nedbat··on Mastodon: Servers, Good and Bad
This is nothing personal against Musk. When you look at what he has done since taking over Twitter, it's nothing but chaos. He doesn't seem to have a clue how to run that company. I have liked Twitter, and I hate what he is doing to it.
nedbat··on Mastodon: Servers, Good and Bad
My complaint with Musk is that he's running the company in a chaotic and destructive way. It's true, I don't agree with his politics, but that's not the problem here. He's got $1B/year of interest to pay, but has lost half of his advertisers. He's gutted the moderation teams, and says he will reinstate all of the banned accounts. He's capriciously laid off much of the staff. It's hard to see how Twitter will continue to survive.
nedbat··on Faster CPython 3.12 Plan
Have you followed the 3.11 performance improvements by the same group? It's ~25% faster than 3.10.
nedbat··on Things I wish everyone knew about Git (Part II)
Are you really suggesting that more people know what "P3D" means than "3 days ago"?
nedbat··on The unreasonable effectiveness of f-strings and re.verbose
What is untrustworthy about it?
nedbat··on What’s in Which Python
Some people might mistakenly assume that "match" and "case" are now hard keywords, which would of course break lots of code.

But they are soft keywords, so there's no issue.

nedbat··on What’s in Which Python
I've now added "new modules" to the most recent handful of versions.
nedbat··on Singleton Is a Bad Idea
You can enforce the constraint, but it shouldn't be in the class itself. How to you make instances for tests?
nedbat··on Singleton Is a Bad Idea
It's fine to have an object that is only instantiated once. But there's no reason to enforce that in the class.
nedbat··on Singleton Is a Bad Idea
You make it sound like "everything is an object" also means "there are no globals". What language is like that?
nedbat··on Singleton Is a Bad Idea
The point is to separate what is true about an object by its nature (what do we know about chess boards), from what is true about how we intend to use the object (we need only one of them). There's no reason to bundle those two concepts together.
nedbat··on Singleton Is a Bad Idea
If you need just one, make just one. Why should the class enforce it?
nedbat··on Singleton Is a Bad Idea
I'm not saying it's a good idea to open it more than once at the same time, but nothing is preventing me from doing it, so I'm not sure what is meant by, "a file is a singleton"?
nedbat··on Singleton Is a Bad Idea
I don't know what you mean by "a file is a singleton": I have many files on my computer, and I can open any of them multiple times.
nedbat··on Python Bytecode Explained
An important thing to note that is a bit buried in this text: Python bytecode changes in every version, sometimes just a little, sometimes a lot. So Python 3.10 has difference in the bytecode instruction set from 3.9, and 3.11 will have differences from 3.10.
nedbat··on Cog resurgence
s/worse/different/

Have you tried to understand what cog does? It's a completely different use than the C preprocessor.

nedbat··on Cog resurgence
Cog works line-by-line, which sidesteps thorny quoting concerns, and makes it applicable to more syntaxes. It lets you use regular Python code instead of "html-ified" code in Jinja (for example).

Certainly if you are happy with Jinja, you should use it.

nedbat··on Three Hundred Walks
Here's the detail of Back Bay (including this morning's 302nd walk which took me to the corner of Beacon and Arlington): https://imgur.com/a/FqQmFNf
nedbat··on Three Hundred Walks
I did walk on the Esplanade, depending on where along Storrow Drive you consider it to start. My walks are getting longer (6.5 miles each), which will let me get to more places, including further down the Esplanade.
nedbat··on Freenode is pointing irc.libera.net to chat.freenode.net
Do you accept the proof that freenode owns the registration?
nedbat··on Also leaving Freenode: FSF, GNU, plus Linux and Python support channels
I hope this is satire. I can assure you that the Python project moved to Libera.
nedbat··on Goodbye Freenode
What I was doing on Freenode was providing a quick answer to questions, and also pointing out that most people had moved, so better answers were more likely on Libera. I never told people to not answer questions. If people wanted Freenode #python to be a lively place, they were welcome to stay and answer questions. They didn't.

Of course, Freenode is free to decide that my mentioning Libera was a reason to remove me. But I didn't see a clear policy forbidding it (though the policies have been changing daily, so I might have missed it). Just as Freenode is free to remove people, people are free to move to another network. And that is what is happening.

My main point in my blog post was not, "I have been wronged!" My point was, "Freenode is doing this to themselves, but it's OK because Freenode doesn't matter."

nedbat··on Recursive, a free variable font for code and UI, now on Google Fonts
The sliders on the site work for me in Firefox, v78.0.2.
nedbat··on Pickle’s Nine Flaws
Can you elaborate? What dependencies? Pickle is in the standard library.
