ne0flex··on Today I've made the difficult decision to reduce the size of Coinbase by ~14%
"They don't even count people, just see them as numbers to reduce/scale up."

I'm remember of when I went out for drinks with a startup consultant friend and she mentioned one founder she spoke with refer to his staff as "biological units" when addressing use of proceeds to hire additional staff.

ne0flex··on Sam Altman's Creepy Eyeball-Scanning Company Gets in Bed with Zoom and Tinder
If you read the comments on Gizmodo, there's some saying that the user base for these apps will drop off. However, the article states:

"World has already been working with Tinder and ran a pilot of the verification process in Japan. It was apparently enough of a success that Tinder will roll out the authentication method globally."

Kind of depressing. As much as I'd like to think something like this would die, let's be honest: it won't.

ne0flex··on USDA is closing buildings, relocating staff, and downsizing-a lot
Your comment reminded me of this book called, "everything I want to do is illegal" [1] written by a farmer that talks about his annoyances with the US food system and how regulations favor corporate farming.

ne0flex··on Unprecedented 'Jobless Boom' Tests Limits of US Economic Expansion
I'd also argue that some services provided by the gov't help towards GDP. An example being the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and them helping to recoup funds from scams and returning the money to victims who would then spend their money and increase the "Consumption" in GDP.
ne0flex··on 'Click-to-cancel' rule is blocked
I can't find the post, but I recall reading an instance where someone used a disposable virtual card for a subscription service. After deleting the card, the company was somehow able to charge the user directly on the bank account that was linked to the digital card.
ne0flex··on Scientists identify culprit behind biggest-ever U.S. honey bee die-off
There's a company called, Greenlight Biosciences, that's developing an RNA-based pesticide for Varroa Mites. Last I spoke with the CEO, he mentioned positive results from trials.

ne0flex··on Life Expectancy in Europe Compared to the US
Probably a combination of Universal Healthcare, Food Regulations (from what I understand, food quality regulations in the US are lacking compared to the EU), more balanced cultural attitudes towards work-life balance, less car-focused cities and more walkable cities.
ne0flex··on iOS 26 Will Let You Add Your U.S. Passport to Wallet for Identity Verification
I've never used anything else other than my passport to travel domestically. Main reason being that when I first moved to the US, I was couch surfing and didn't have a permanent address. When I finally got my own apartment and went to get a state ID card, the experience at the DMV made me not want to return to get a real ID card, so I just use my passport and don't have to worry about whether it's in compliance or not.
ne0flex··on Coinbase says hackers bribed staff to steal customer data, demanding $20M ransom
I checked my email to see if I received anything and, interestingly, I received an email from Coinbase on April 14 that they're updating the User Agreement. The new terms only apply to disputes initiated by me or Coinbase after May 15, 2025. Timing seems suspect.
ne0flex··on New study finds link between green spaces and police violence
There are studies in Japan that showed train stations with blue lights installed have lower instances of attempted suicides than stations without blue lights [1]. There are also studies that indicate time in nature is associated with lower stress levels and blood pressure, regardless of income [2].

ne0flex··on How the United States Gave Up Being a Science Superpower
Very true, among them: - Nuclear energy - Internet & GPS - Numerous medical advancements (rapid medical response techniques, advanced trauma care, etc.)

It's a dual-edged sword.

ne0flex··on Microbe that infests hospitals can digest medical-grade plastic ― a first
Was curious what book this is, so I copy-pasted your summary and prefaced it with "what book is the one" and it gave me the correct title and author. Looking forward to reading this!
ne0flex··on Getting Older Isn't What You Think
A couple years ago I renewed my passport. When the new passport came in and I compared the picture page of both, I went through a similar feeling (basically comparing my 20YO to my 30YO) noticing the bags under my eyes getting darker and just general expression looking more docile. After having my first born, my hair began to gray fairly rapidly (thankfully no balding yet) and when I look in the mirror, sometimes, it just feels odd.

ne0flex··on Are noise-cancelling headphones to blame for young people's hearing problems?
How high do you have volume when you have the noise cancellation on? I have pretty bad tinnitus and most of my waking hours I have my AirPod Pros in but haven't noticed any increase in my tinnitus.
ne0flex··on Changes in schizophrenia diagnoses associated with cannabis use disorder
>"I mean, it's legal, right?" asked the Tesla founder, before taking a drag on the joint.

"Tesla founder." You'd hope that the BBC would get right that he's not the founder but an early investor that ended up taking over the company and kicking out the original founders.

ne0flex··on Canada euthanasia now accounts for nearly one in 20 deaths
Both my grandfather and my aunt were palliative care towards their end. Their respective care providers kept asking them if they'd like to increase dosage of their medicine (can't remember what my grandfather was one, but my aunt was on morphine). Despite both of them at the time said that they didn't want to increase dosage, but the care provider kept trying to increase. My family's theory is that they were trying to speed their passing. Both cases were in Canada.
ne0flex··on A mistake that killed Japan's software industry? (2023)
Curious why you say it's not a great app?
ne0flex··on What happens when people with acute psychosis meet the voices in their heads?
I've read that the voices that people with schizophrenia hear can vary depending on their cultural background (people from US hearing violent/confrontational voices, people from India hearing more playful voices / helpful voices). This case talks about affirming for those with violent voices. Wonder how that is with someone who hears pleasant voices.
ne0flex··on Human brain changes after first psilocybin use
>I don't approach it seeking some lesson or greater truth, just have a nice time, which is maybe the final lesson lol. I relate to this a lot. After a friend died in 2020, I started down that rabbit hole increasing dosages for look "perspective" or "truth" that ended up cumulating into an overdose and an overnight hospital stay. At that point, I realized that going into these things searching for something / using as a coping mechanism is fruitless and it's a more "enjoy the journey" type of thing. I was hoping for an epiphany that would set me on some steel-willed journey, but that never came.
ne0flex··on Sweden will offer migrants $34k to go home
After reading this article, it's crazy to see how the attitude has shifted, and number of immigrants exploded in recent years. I just spent the past 2 weeks in Japan and was surprised by the sheer amount foreign workers. I remember almost a decade ago until COVID, whenever I visited my wife's hometown in very rural Fukuoka, a Russian woman married to a Japanese woman and myself were literally the only foreigners in the town. When I went there 2 weeks ago, I saw several foreign workers at a 7-eleven.
ne0flex··on Lucid Boss Says Tesla Has Lost Its "Sense of Purpose"
I find that German cars have really dropped in quality. My dad changes car leases every 2 -3 years. Over the past decade, he's driven Lexus, Mercedes, BMW, Audi, Genesis. They were all brand new when he got them. He's only ever had problems with the German brands. His BMW crapped out twice, once on the highway and once while waiting at a light. My brother bought a BMW and he's constantly having to take it to the shop for repairs because something keeps dying. Over the past 5 years, my other friends that drive German cars usually always have issues. Meanwhile, my friends that drive Japanese or Korean brands seldom have to take them in aside for regular maintenance purposes.
ne0flex··on Why new hires often get paid more than existing employees
At my current firm, I found out that my co-worker, a new hire (22-year about a year out of college) was making $3k more than me, who is 10 years older than him. Spoke with my boss about this and they gave me a 30% bump. The HR reasoning was that they thought I was 'happy' with my current salary and that I had loyalty to the company because I've been with them for 5 years. A former coworker went to get an offer from another firm and tried to use that as leverage for a salary increase and ended up getting fired.
ne0flex··on Airlines will make $118B in extra fees
There was a 2012 WSJ article about that [0]. I have both a Windows Surface and a MacBook. When looking for flights, I used both to check for prices in hopes to find better prices, but didn't really notice any discrepancy. I figured maybe they may be showing the same price due to both devices having the same IP address or something to that effect.

ne0flex··on I will always prefer to work from home
For my company, the worst thing is that we have hot desks, which wouldn't be a problem if there were enough seats if, say, 90%-95% of all staff came in on the same day and had their own seat. However, one of the floors that my company leases out is undergoing renovations and they shifted all those employees to other floors while keeping the same in-office weekly requirements. Way too many times, I've went into the office just to not be able to find a seat. We have a hoteling reservation system, but even if you reserve a seat, if you don't come in by 8:50 or so, someone will have taken it. I've complained to our corporate services team and have never received a response.
ne0flex··on U.S. Consumers Spent More on Food in 2022 Than Ever Before (Inflation Adjusted)
Towards the end of 2021, I began cooking at home and bringing my lunch to save money. My wife and I used to eat out a lot, and I would usually buy lunch. Cooking food resulted in close to 600-$700 in savings per month. Also, cooking for myself also resulted in me eating healthier (due to me being lazy and opting for simple dishes such as cooking chicken in butter and steaming vegetables) and I ended up losing close to 40lbs over the span of a few months.
ne0flex··on Many people in finance, sales and management feel their jobs are pointless
This definitely hit home. I work for a bank and my position is helping connect the bank's clients to startups. If I was working for one of the corporate client's as part of their CVC or innovation investment scouting team, that would be different but just brokering the introduction kind of rings shallow. The only purpose I see to my position is when a startup is talking to a corporate but not necessarily to the key person to get the discussion moving. Corporates are generally capable of reaching out to startups on their own and the startups are usually eager to talk with them.

Despite all that, I find it surprising that some of the corporates are unaware of some of the main players (at least from my perspective) in their target sectors.

ne0flex··on Show HN: The full source code and assets for my custom game engine and game
More of a general nooby question: what would be a good way to read through code like this? Where to start? How to understand what's going on and when? etc.
ne0flex··on Eating too much added sugar increases risk of dying with heart disease (2014)
Had a similar thing with my friend. He used to drink Pepsi all the time, now he gets stomach burn if he drinks it.
