ncavig··on California Cuts All State Funding for Libraries
Seriously?
ncavig··on A "Moneyball" statician predicted Jeremy Lin's success 2 years ago
I agree. Generally with smart basketball players, there TO's go down as they get familiar with the pace and level of play. A comment struck me the other day by an announcer, Lin has never played against 7 footers before. Whether that's true or not, he may have seen a few while at Harvard, but to consistently play against these behemoths has got to be a new feeling. Regardless of skill, it'll still take time to get use to the size and style of the NBA.

What I love about Lin is he is a smart player and a smart person. It's not a surprise to him that he's turned the ball over. Guess what he'll be working on in the future.

ncavig··on More Water than Ever Found on the Moon
Please indulge my ignorance... Maybe a chemist or someone better versed can answer; are we close, or is it plausible to construct a star trek like replicator to rearrange atoms to form new substances such as water?
ncavig··on List of 61 senators refusing to meet and discuss PIPA/SOPA
I think this pertinent and will make it even easier to make the call

ncavig··on Redditors pledging to donate thousands to Wikimedia if they dump GoDaddy
I didn't pledge but just donated. I'm curious to learn how much in donations they got from this. Anyone know if numbers have been released?
ncavig··on Full Tilt Ponzi
Excuse my ignorance, but isn't this quite similar to how banks work? I was under the assumption that banks don't have enough cash on hand to pay out all clients if everyone decided to withdraw.
ncavig··on Idea to paying customers in 7 weeks: how we did it
Building a service that is dependent on another service is always a risk, but this is a very nice and simple app that a lot of the "social media" sides of companies could utilize. It's a great idea to make some extra revenue and I think has a nice market. Well done.
ncavig··on Expert Exchange gets narky after snub from Q/A site review
I'm pretty sure that's how Yahoo! Answers works as well, no?
ncavig··on Announcing Soulmate, a Redis-backed service for fast autocompleting
Would be cool to have an example of this running on websockets and get rid of the request/response latency that most autocompletes have. Keep the socket open when the text field is focused and you should be able to cut down the response time even further without that overhead.
ncavig··on Income Distribution Within U.S. Religious Groups
Even atheism isn't a religion, I'd like to see what the distribution is for individuals that would classify themselves as atheists. I see there's an unaffiliated category. According to the site;

This group (unaffiliated) includes atheists, agnostics and people who describe their religion as “nothing in particular.” This latter group can be further divided into “secular unaffiliated” and “religious unaffiliated.”

ncavig··on Security patch releases to Rails 2.3.x, 3.0.x
run 'bundle update rails' instead of 'bundle update'. If you're like me, you'd like to only update the rails gem.

EDIT: If you run bundle update with no parameters, bundler will ignore any previously installed gems and resolve all dependencies again based on the latest versions of all gems available in the sources.

ncavig··on How I rebuilt 7books from scratch in 4 days
I'm actually quite curious about your amazon affiliate model, and what your upkeep cost vs income is?

Looks like a great site and will be perusing as I finish my current reading material. Any thought in a book recommendation engine or looking into amazon's api for similar items/books to integrate?

ncavig··on Show HN: Our app - FourSquare for Beer
Isn't there a google app to take a picture of certain items/places and it's supposed to be able to identify? That could definitely come in handy if there's an API for that.
ncavig··on Show HN: Our app - FourSquare for Beer
The problem is it's hard to "check-in" for a beer you're drinking. FourSquare is a bit easier because you don't really need to type anything out, it's location based. Not only that, but the more beer you drink the harder it will be to successfully "check-in"
ncavig··on Personal Genetics Startup 23andMe Raises $22 Million
I've tried it as well. Signed up for the same $100 special. I would really like to see integration in to my primary doctor and medical record holder so as new information comes out on drugs and therapy, I can benefit from them knowing what I could respond best to.

It's far off in my opinion, and the site doesn't offer me much of a value add, but I signed up to reap benefits of future findings as well as hopefully integration into Google Health or equivalent.

ncavig··on Ask HN: Retainer and rate question for software engineer
Thanks for both responses. I do like the having a couple options to offer. I appreciate the input guys
ncavig··on Interactive Javascript Terminal as a personal website
At least in chrome the backspace key performs a browser back. Should try to overload the key with keydown event.

Would also be cool to have a history of ran commands or tab-completion functionality =)
