naz··on The Colour Clock
Even though the implementation above doesn't use any HTML5-specific features, the term is becoming a synonym for Dynamic HTML.
naz··on The Colour Clock
Great minds and all. If you replace the html file in the screensaver bundle you can use yours (or mine) instead of the flash one.
naz··on The Colour Clock
Yes, just corrected this thanks.
naz··on The Colour Clock
Here's my attempt: http://brisy.info/colors It treats each section of the time as a hex pair, see colors.js for implementation.

edit: Hours corrected. Thanks wladimir

naz··on The Colour Clock
Awesome idea. I took some time to rewrite in HTML5: http://brisy.info/colors/

Though the colours I'm getting are different. I wonder why.

naz··on Once again, praise kids for effort, not for 'smarts'
The idea is to take good results as evidence of effort.

naz··on BBC To Delete 172 Websites Due to Budget Cuts, Geek Saves Them for $3.99
> The BBC has a long history of recklessly losing valuable data

This is quite a fascinating topic in itself. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Lost_BBC_episodes http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doctor_Who_missing_episodes

naz··on Mac App Store: Open for Business
The Mac App Store is not showing in software update here (UK)

edit: never mind, it is showing up now.

naz··on Quora goes (more) viral
Quora is very different from StackExchange sites. There are no badges or karma. Users aren't ranked. The site revolves around following people, questions and topics that interest you and your homepage reflects those. The design is much cleaner and pages update in real time. You also pull in your social connections and can follow your friends.
naz··on How does the Twitter iPhone App implement a custom tab bar?
Do CALayer masks support gradient borders?

I've been working on something[1] very similar for some of my own apps. It is available under the MIT license. What license are these recipes released under?

I decided not to mask the icons and opted for pre-masked PNGs because I couldn't match the style as well as I could in Photoshop. Yours is looking very good though. Maybe we should merge?

And you can't access any of your sales data until iTunes connect reopens after Christmas.

False. Unless the device is jailbroken. Each app has a separate cookie store and web cache.

However, you can access the address book without prompting.

People were saying that about Yahoo, you can't make money without pop-ups, etc. before Google came along
naz··on My Y Combinator Interview (W2011)
I was part of Auctomatic, and I still think inventory management is a space to be disrupted. I think that we were free from day one was a reason that people were reluctant to start paying.

The one trouble with eBay inventory management, or any space where there are existing competitors, is every user has their own pet feature they absolutely can't live without. It becomes a battle to implement them all and keep a clean interface.

Also make sure you can import everything from every competitor. It lets people try your software very easily and gives you all of their data. So even if they don't become a hardcore user you can see what one looks like.

naz··on Paypal.com appears to be unavailable
It doesn't sound like you are in favour of the principle of WikiLeaks.

naz··on Programmer Competency Matrix: Do you use it when hiring?
> That entry was the only Windows-centric one in the whole table

The table also mentioned Powershell, VS.Net and VBScript

> And finally even if all the examples were in Windows terms, I hope that someone given the responsibility to interview new hires would be able to abstract from examples to general principles.

That may be true but I think Unix is something any programmer should at least be aware of.

naz··on Programmer Competency Matrix: Do you use it when hiring?
Seems a bit Windows-centric. I've never heard of "Scott Hanselman's power tools". Not a single mention of Vim, Emacs or UNIX.
naz··on Drew Houston's (Dropbox) YC Application
"How long have the founders known one another and how did you meet?"

I wonder how many single founders make a terrible joke answer to that question and if some sort of filtering could be applied. Drew handled it well, I would have just put n/a

naz··on Chance of Dying From Backscatter Radiation Same as Chance of Terrorism
A single backscatter X-ray scan gives a radiation dose of 0.009 mrems, about the same as eating a banana.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banana_equivalent_dose

Don't get me wrong, I'm opposed to the scanners as much as anyone for privacy reasons and general pointlessness. But I'm seeing a lot of bad science thrown around here.

naz··on Facebook bug disables women's accounts, asks for government ID, fix in process
They don't ban breastfeeding images, they ban images of breasts. They don't ban domestic violence survivors from using pseudonyms, they ban pseudonyms.

It is easy to make a subset of a policy appear discriminatory. For example, Facebook ban black people from creating multiple profiles. Clearly racist, until you consider they ban everyone from creating multiple profiles.
