nawitus··on Explaining React's license
He implied that https://webcomponents.org/ is part of Polymer, but it is not.
nawitus··on Explaining React's license
I've used Polymer in three production applications and they were successes.
nawitus··on Explaining React's license
That's not correct, the Web Component catalog is completely separate from Polymer. Polymer is a library to make it easier to implement web components. You can use Polymer without using any of the community's components.

Jenkins 2.x for building the images (we just execute docker build and push in a Jenkinsfile), then we use Kontena for orchestration (e.g. the Kontena agent pulls the image from the docker registry). For local development we use docker-compose.

Jenkins and the Jenkins slaves also run on docker, and are managed by Kontena. In fact, the whole platform/pipeline runs completely on Docker. We use Ansible to install Kontena/docker on new servers.

nawitus··on Docker Is Raising Funding at $1.3B Valuation
" I see the future as running a docker file on your laptop, running it through a ci system, then pushing it to a container service. Docker is the clear standard."

Where I work this has been the standard for over a year now.

So what is a good replacement for docker?
nawitus··on Can protein startups and their investors take on Big Cow?
Nothing, and I do. It's just odd when I see tofu recommended as a "fake meat".
nawitus··on Can protein startups and their investors take on Big Cow?
I recommend eating tofu as tofu, not as a fake meat. It's delicious if you know how to prepare it.
nawitus··on Coco: Framework for enterprise blockchain networks
'because it's "incorruptible digital ledger of economic transactions" (the very definition of a blockchain)'

I would think that blockchain requires it to be a distributed ledger. A non-distributed digital ledger is simply a Merkle tree?

" So if you're transferring money from one bank to another it makes it all but impossible to mess with that transaction in flight (man in the middle attacks, timing attacks, replay attacks, etc)."

You can use non-blockchain cryptography to guarantee that.

nawitus··on Hypnotized by Hyperloop
You merely present an opinion without an argument. You need to actually argue why trains are better than "mini metros for cars". You might be correct, but just stating your opinion is not constructive.
nawitus··on How to present a GitHub project for your resume (2016)
"Nobody cares about your code"

That's a peculiar claim about people who hire employees to create code.

"It’s not the code that counts, it’s the product"

So is everyone only hiring programmers who write code which can be sloppy and full of technical debt and impossible maintain, as long as the product works okay for now?

nawitus··on I hacked my body for a future that never came
Your comment is silly. Accusing someone of being a "nutcase" is not constructive, nor is a comment about becoming a Borg.

Yes, at the moment it's not plausible to upgrade one's arm. In the future it will become plausible, though, and the upgrade will at some point be much better than what you can do at a gym. In fact, you can only get a stronger arm at the gym (or an arm with more endurance), but a bionic arm can be much better.

nawitus··on The Pop-Up Employer: Build a Team, Do the Job, Say Goodbye
3.8k EUR / month is low, since taxes and prices are high in Finland.

The true cost to the employer is almost always higher than what is paid to the employee.

"I don't really understand what you're complaining about."

This is explained in my second paragraph.

nawitus··on The Pop-Up Employer: Build a Team, Do the Job, Say Goodbye
I don't think it's worthwhile.. the union governs over 42 000 employees, they will hardly take my own preferences into account.
nawitus··on The Pop-Up Employer: Build a Team, Do the Job, Say Goodbye
Yes. There is of course still a negotiation of benefits on top of the standard contract, I'm not paid minimum wage. If I could remove some benefits I don't need from my own, personal contract this would give me leverage to get something else in return. A slightly higher wage if nothing else.
nawitus··on The Pop-Up Employer: Build a Team, Do the Job, Say Goodbye
One non-American anecdote: Finnish software engineers are "heavily" unionized. However, the minimum wages the union has negotiated are really low, $52643 per year for the most senior roles (less senior roles have even lower minimum wages). Of course, unions work differently in different countries, and Finland is one of the most unionized countries in the world.

I personally hate the fact that I'm subjected to the agreement negotiated by the union even when I'm not a member of a union. They negotiate for things that I don't need/agree with, yet don't negotiate for things that I would like. In effect, I'm "paying" for benefits that I don't need, yet this agreement makes it more difficult to argue for benefits that I actually want in my contract.

nawitus··on ECMAScript 2017 Language Specification
Usually that only disallows reassignment of function arguments. For example, eslint's no-param-reassign rule by default allows modifying the properties of the function argument. However, the "props" parameter for this rule can disallow even the modification of properties of a function's argument.
nawitus··on ECMAScript 2017 Language Specification
Which linter rule is that?
nawitus··on How can Ethereum systematically scale better?
Why is property on the blockchain nonsensical?
nawitus··on Which professions are paid too much given their value to society?
I don't understand what "value" means here. There is a large number of "jobs", maybe even majority of jobs, which without a modern society would not function. Would you then calculate the value of these jobs as the value of modern society divided by the number of employed people with the given job?
nawitus··on Americans don’t need more degrees, they need training
In theory the company can instead hire trained employees whose training is paid by the other companies, and not invest anything to train their own workforce. And that ultimately leads to no company investing into training, other than the bare minimum.
nawitus··on Why Did a U.S. Destroyer Fail to Dodge a Cargo Ship?
> 2) The destroyer was running without transponder on, as per typical Navy behavior so it couldn't be tracked by unfriendly powers. This meant the automated navigation system on the cargo ship didn't see it.

I hope this behavior is changed during peace to prevent unnecessary human fatalities.

nawitus··on Instagram Makes a Smooth Move to Python 3
You can "brute force" scale pretty much anything just by throwing up more computing resources at the problem - but that means the language/framework/library is less scalable than something else which requires less resources. If the different in scalability is large enough, I suppose one can claim that one of the alternatives is "not really scalable".

I suppose that quote could use better wording.

nawitus··on How to Improve a Legacy Codebase
I also disagreed with that part in the article. Big-bang rewrites can be just fine - but usually there are reasons it's not possible.
nawitus··on The Rise and Fall of Yik Yak
The important question is actually "should there be legal duties", which you can determine from the original point: "I am just shocked at the amount of control, influence, and involvement into their students' lives universities are expected to have."

I (for one) believe universities should not have a legal duty to prevent online harrassment, even though it may be of interest to universities.

nawitus··on Frighteningly Ambitious Startup Ideas (2012)
"- environmental degradation is based on two exponential growth trends: human population and per-capita consumption (driven by economic growth)."

You left out one detail: environmental degration per consumption. This is a really important factor, and is probably easist of th tree to minimize, and is being minimized every year. (Assuming that you didn't equate consumption and environmental degration).
