nattaylor··on A Magic Prioritization Trick
Whoever came up with the 1-3 month game changer oughta get a promotion
nattaylor··on SQLite Functions for Working with JSON
I think this parquet virtual table extension is a pretty neat example of the power of extension https://cldellow.com/2018/06/22/sqlite-parquet-vtable.html
nattaylor··on PLJS – JavaScript Language Plugin for PostreSQL
(I haven't tried pljs but I think this is relevant) I've used JavaScript UDFs in Snowflake for array processing and also dumb POCs things like importing an entire library for useragent parsing
nattaylor··on Show HN: Explore large language models with 512MB of RAM
At 512gb RAM, it uses https://huggingface.co/jncraton/LaMini-Flan-T5-248M-ct2-int8 which says

"This model is one of our LaMini-LM model series in paper "LaMini-LM: A Diverse Herd of Distilled Models from Large-Scale Instructions". This model is a fine-tuned version of google/flan-t5-base on LaMini-instruction dataset that contains 2.58M samples for instruction fine-tuning"

nattaylor··on DuckDB 0.7.0
Duckdb excels at OLAP workloads that SQLite would choke on
nattaylor··on A lightweight (~5000 LOC) Python interpreter for game engines
I'd like to give the WASM build a try
nattaylor··on 9 years maintaining a sorta-popular open-source package: lessons learned
Putting examples in the docs to avoid expanding the library is an excellent compromise!
nattaylor··on PHP in 2023
I might be misinterpreting "taken seriously" with utility, but to me it is very valuable that a PHP script can just be dropped on almost any web server and it can start doing stuff, and that alone is reason enough not to not dismiss it.
nattaylor··on Does it inline?
Hadn't heard of Bolin. It sounds more approachable than C
nattaylor··on A Poor Man's API
Reminds me of datasette, which does similar things for SQLite (and much more, too). Docs at https://docs.datasette.io/en/stable/json_api.html

Example: Retrieve JSON for https://fivethirtyeight.datasettes.com/polls/president_prima... simply with https://covid-19.datasettes.com/covid/ny_times_us_counties.j... (I added a filter for Texas)

nattaylor··on Roaring bitmaps: what they are and how they work
Oops, thanks for pointing that out
nattaylor··on Roaring bitmaps: what they are and how they work
I was thinking a similar thought that 4096 seemed quite magic (although it seems to be chosen based on research) and that RB perf could probably be tuned based on the workload
nattaylor··on Roaring bitmaps: what they are and how they work
I enjoyed this walkthrough. I'm interested in RB because it's used in Lucene but never dug in and assumed (without much thought) that it had to do with consecutive runs of 1s and 0s. Wrong!
nattaylor··on Does my data fit in RAM?
Yes, take a look at the "inspired by" tweet [0]

nattaylor··on Column order in PostgreSQL does matter
It does have to read it because NULLs aren't counted
nattaylor··on Investing in lighting did great things for my mental and physical health
Hue Ambiance, night shift and light/dark according to time of day on both phone and laptop really seem to help me feel awake and also get right to sleep
nattaylor··on Show HN: Mitmproxy2swagger – Automagically reverse-engineer REST APIs
I gave this a try today. It was silky smooth! Is it possible to tell Swagger to omit OPTIONS methods?
nattaylor··on The Return of New York Harbor’s Oysters
On the shores of Rhode Island, my family has participated in an oyster gardening program run URI which involved the same wire boxes and shells with larvae attached. However we kept them tied to the dock, then they collected and distributed to the beds. It's cool to see the research seems to have evolved and they can just go straight to the beds now.

That being said, all the little kids in my extended family got excited and educated about oysters from having them tied to the dock, so there's something to be said for that too.

nattaylor··on I'm a scam prevention expert and I got scammed
My US based Amazon experience is like yours with fast shipping and easy refunds/exchanges, so don't lose hope. I guess with 100e6 or so customers, there are bound to be some bad experiences.
nattaylor··on Directly running DuckDB queries on data stored in SQLite files
Can't wait to see what simonw comes up for using this with datasette!
nattaylor··on Almost 37 years after its launch, someone found an Easter egg in Windows 1.0
Photoshop loading screen used to do it

I haven't used PS recently to know it is still does

nattaylor··on Interop 2022: browsers working together to improve the web for developers
Neat. The big players seem committed and there is a scoring system to measure progress.
nattaylor··on Is GitHub Down?
I'm getting 500s
nattaylor··on Device wraps around hot surfaces, turns wasted heat to electricity
Rheem manufactures a heat pump HW heater that could use the exhaust of the AC heat pumps and dry with a fan in the AC. Maybe a set up like that?
nattaylor··on YouTube Celebrates – One Trillion Minecraft Views on YouTube and Counting
The scale of YouTube is amazing. This is 100 views for every person on earth.
nattaylor··on Expensify S-1
Yeah, from Bedrockdb.com:

>Bedrock was built by Expensify, and is a networking and distributed transaction layer built atop SQLite, the fastest, most reliable, and most widely distributed database in the world.

nattaylor··on Expensify S-1
I still marvel that they've built such a big company around a SQLite fork.

>Expensify is built on Bedrock - a private Blockchain-based data foundation atop a custom fork of SQLite, which we believe is the fastest, most reliable and most widely distributed database in the world. This fork optimizes SQLite to operate on extremely high core density servers, concurrently executing thousands of page-locked transactions per server, with robust conflict detection and resolution. Bedrock further extends SQLite -- which is a local database with no networking component -- with a WAN-optimized, Paxos-based self-healing clustered replication engine designed to conduct atomic two-phase commits over high-latency / low-reliability internet VPN links, using the world's longest continuously operational Blockchain (since before Bitcoin began). Our design is optimized for global scale, speed and reliability.

nattaylor··on My tiny side project has had more impact than my decade in the software industry
I use a Mammoth WordPress plugin on a few sites. I dislike prominent donation nags, but if just popped up when I converted a document I think I'd be compelled to donate. It's a real time saver.
nattaylor··on Rhode island makes financial literacy classes required for high school students
In 2003 in my high school social studies teacher set aside time each class to do this and tied to world events.

He was getting up there in age and had horrible skin cancer but still literally sprinted down the halls after truants.

He is my all-time favorite teacher, although I actually don't remember that many life skills from him :)

nattaylor··on HTML and CSS techniques to reduce your JavaScript
I was vaguely aware of several of these, but hadn't thought to use them in the ways the author proposes.

The gallery with horizontal snap scrolling, the use of smooth scrolling to jump between anchors and even clamp are all quite cool.

I also had no idea that's how sticky worked!
