nathanwdavis··on Secondary shops flooded with unicorn sellers
I was quite disappointed to find the article is not about actual unicorns :-( Where have all the great journalists gone...
nathanwdavis··on DragonBox: Secretly teach algebra to your children
I can attest that the methodology really does work - at least for my son. I bought it when he turned 6 and he was able to learn with just a tiny help from me. Thanks for building a great learning experience!
nathanwdavis··on Building a ‘People Who Like This Also Like’ Feature
Well written. The topics are explained carefully and the interactive examples are very nice. Thank you Ben!

How did you embed the examples into the post?

nathanwdavis··on [dead]
Interesting read... until the phrase "big data".
nathanwdavis··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (November 2014)
That is true. For the right candidate, that is an option.

Haven in Indianapolis/Fishers, IN - http://www.joinhaven.com/

About Haven: At Haven, we believe home ownership should be a lot better. We are building a free, intuitive mobile app and website that equips homeowners with predictive technology to help them become better homeowners, by learning and anticipating a home’s needs while saving time and money. Haven sends reminders to users when it’s time to make an update, recommends licensed, insured service professionals, accepts payment, and serves as a digital organizer of receipts and records, without the user ever leaving the app. It gives confidence and peace of mind to homeowners by helping them to be responsible and proactive in home maintenance decisions. We're venture-funded, growing, and looking to disrupt the home services space.

We are looking for a talented Fullstack Developer, Visual Designer, and iOS/Android Developers. See http://haven.bamboohr.com/jobs/ for details

A little about our technology: - Backend: Node.js/Express for API, MongoDB, various other tooling - Frontend: Angularjs web app, iOS/Android apps - Design: Mobile first, everyone participates

nathanwdavis··on Show HN: SwiftData – A SQLite library in Swift
What's the advantage of using something like this over CoreData - which is built in?
nathanwdavis··on Go Continuous Delivery is now open source
As if Google's Go programming language was not already named poorly enough, now somebody creates a CD service called Go. Very confusing!
nathanwdavis··on A simple way to validate your startup idea
I do wonder if this is a valid technique if your sales target is businesses, not individual consumers. Perhaps some variant?
nathanwdavis··on Examining PostgreSQL 9.4 – A first look
Concurrent materialized view refresh and upserts would both be huge in my opinion.
nathanwdavis··on Show HN: LINQ for Go
Here's a gist I created a couple months ago that kind of explains the performance characteristics of goroutine per loop vs. partitioning with goroutines

https://gist.github.com/nathanwdavis/6290428

Basically, for big lists a goroutine per loop is very slow in comparison.

nathanwdavis··on Zurb Foundation 5 Released
This is on 7.0.2 on an iPhone 4s. Crashes Safari reliably 4 times in a row. Maybe it's just my bad luck.

Anyway, looking at it on my laptop now. It looks great!

nathanwdavis··on Zurb Foundation 5 Released
The linked web page crashes Safari on iOS 7. Mobile first, eh?
nathanwdavis··on Amazon RDS for PostgreSQL
It doesn't mention which version of PostgreSql. I hope it is 9.3. It's got to be at least 9.2 since it supports the Json datatype.
nathanwdavis··on Poll: If you're in the US, What State Do You Live In?
It would be interesting to see the results of this weighted by state population.
nathanwdavis··on Eric Lippert is leaving Microsoft
If you've never read Eric's blog, I highly recommend it for anyone into language design and implementation (C# or not).
nathanwdavis··on A 1-star, unfiltered user review of Yelp
This does bode well for sites like AngiesList.com which charge a small membership fee (to end users), don't allow anonymous reviews, and allow businesses to respond publicly to individual review's. (I work for Angie's List)
nathanwdavis··on Dell launches Ultrabook for $999
What is really interesting is not the product itself, but the animation that progresses as you scroll down the page. Very neat!

Basically instead of time controlling the sequence of frames, it is the scroll position.

nathanwdavis··on Iranian Web Programmer’s Death Sentence to Be Carried Out Any Moment
He was visiting his terminally-ill father.
nathanwdavis··on Samsung exec: Apple’s ‘iTV’ is nothing to worry about
"There's no chance that the iPhone is going to get any significant market share. No chance. It's a $500 subsidized item. They may make a lot of money. But if you actually take a look at the 1.3 billion phones that get sold, I'd prefer to have our software in 60% or 70% or 80% of them, than I would to have 2% or 3%, which is what Apple might get."

-Steve Ballmer, 2007

nathanwdavis··on If you're using Node.js, you're doing life wrong
Wow, this guy seems like a very angry person.
nathanwdavis··on Hadoop vs. an RDBMS: How much (less) would you pay?
This article seems to misinterpret scale-up vs. scale-out.

>Yahoo and Facebook are excellent examples of how Hadoop can scale up; but little is usually said about how Hadoop can scale the other way..

It says this right after mentioning that those operations have 5-digit sized hadoop clusters.

nathanwdavis··on Bill Joy's greatest gift to man – the vi editor
You really should get off HN and enjoy the sea.
nathanwdavis··on Redis for win32 and the Microsoft patch
Antirez, with this reasoning perhaps it makes sense for the official Redis project to support an official redis-cli (the command line client) for Windows.

I agree that installing Redis on Windows is kind of "doing it wrong", but the ability to easily access a Redis server with redis-cli even on Windows seems to be pretty important to the continued increase in user base.

Thoughts?

EDIT: I understand there is a redis-cli for Window at https://github.com/dmajkic/redis/downloads , but a separate download that users must know about and keep up to date separately is a barrier to entry, IMHO.

nathanwdavis··on Google Dart native on WebKit?
They are NOT asking the Webkit project to add Dart. They want to get a pluggable VM system into Webkit. Then once that is in place, Google would not need to fork Webkit to get Dart into Chrome. And any other vendor that wants to be able to extend Webkit with another VM would not need to fork it either. It is clear that Google wants to get a Dart VM into Chrome, and I would rather that happen via a pluggable VM system than via a fork of WebKit.
nathanwdavis··on Phil Haack quit Microsoft for GitHub
...and https://github.com/fsharp (the compiler, core lib extensions, IDE bindings, etc)

Also, MS contributions toward libuv (part of node.js project)

nathanwdavis··on Code snippets on Microsoft website shown in form of images.
Proper syntax hi-lighting html markup is used for most of the MSDN content I've used recently. Definitely for the .NET and WinRT content.
nathanwdavis··on Code snippets on Microsoft website shown in form of images.
I doubt the editors or developers of the MS Translator even know what HN is. I know... it's shocking.
nathanwdavis··on On cryptography and dogmas
In case you haven't seen the long thread of comments on the pull request that lead to this blog post: https://github.com/antirez/lamernews/pull/8
nathanwdavis··on An HN style social news site written in Ruby/Sinatra/Redis/JQuery by Antirez
What I like most about this is that it is a non-trivial, non-toy example of using Redis effectively. Thanks antirez!!
