nathanvanfleet··on Demand for ornamental plants is ravaging South Africa’s rare desert flora
I haven't read this article yet but one interesting part of this is Facebook. You can join any number of groups on Facebook for specific plants and plant types and there are sellers there showing off some very obviously poached plants. If you enquire with them they are sometimes only interested if you are buying hundreds of plants at a time. I also know a handful of collectors who are old and like to collect who have bought from these sellers.

A Jack Chick track right here in the middle of a comment thread.

Not really sure if being rich and popular but not depraved and greedy really classifies as zen
nathanvanfleet··on Spotify deletes 70 Joe Rogan episodes
Seems like a nice project would be to get every single episode, convert them all to text, and then scan the missing episodes to figure out why it was removed. I can guess for the Milo, Gavin, Alex Jones, and Molyneux episodes. That's a yikes
nathanvanfleet··on The great renaming: what happened to Eth2?
People will indeed follow where the small minority of people who run things go.
nathanvanfleet··on Silicon die teardown: a look inside an early 555 timer chip
Why is everyone in the world going crazy about 555 timers?
nathanvanfleet··on Stray bullet kills English astrophysicist visiting United States
As a Canadian who moved to the United States this is something that I worry about all the time. That putting myself into this situation might just randomly lead to some random violent event happening to me. I remember that within a month of moving here about a block from me there was reports of someone driving their car down the sidewalk. Just last month someone was high on something, climbed up on the top of the Castro theatre, and started throwing cinder blocks down on people. While that's not really the riskiest situation it kind of summarizes some things that seem "normal" in the US that I would never dream might happen where I am from.

The US is dominated by billionaires. If you draw comfort from this article than it doesn't take much.

nathanvanfleet··on Elizabeth Holmes found guilty
I think that Fox news has been around enough that people really don't expect any media to be neutral anymore. It just seems natural and normal for any media outlet to be vertically integrated into something. Washington Post seems to be anti union and against billionaires being taxed? Whatever.
nathanvanfleet··on The Darker Side of Aaron Swartz (2013)
I think if you speak about it like man/boy it seems sort of abstract. It's more that he wasn't so much of an adult. It seems like he was lacking a lot of responsibility that one would expect from an adult.

nathanvanfleet··on Bay Area car owners leaving trunks open while parked amid wave of car break-ins
I don't really think it's "culture." I think that culture and the environment you grow up in can make you think something is a good idea or even "cool." People might not feel like there is a better option. But I think ultimately the issue is that there really isn't much of a better option. De-unionization and wage stagnation has made it basically impossible to live with any dignity on a multiple tiers of jobs. Maybe the culture that certain classes of people don't deserve a living wage is contributing to this?
nathanvanfleet··on Housing is both a human right and a profitable asset, and that’s the problem
Why do you think it's not enforceable? You can prevent any kind of house ownership or change incentives with taxation. Random example: Taxing non-primary residences. Taxing rental income etc.
nathanvanfleet··on Cryptocurrency scams cost owners $7.7B in 2021, driven by DeFi-based “rug pulls”
Yes let's keep making weird incentives for law enforcement like asset forfeiture. I want police to be like an American ambulance and run my credit card before saving my life.

nathanvanfleet··on Apple CEO Tim Cook 'secretly' signed $275B deal with China in 2016
I think you're assuming they are not available because they pushed back on the one specific thing about island size and not something else all together. It's not really proven that they are not available because they have that much integrity.

I'll never respect Shopify. I gave them my CV with decent experience and the recruiter never even spoke to me on the phone. They told me that I would need more of a social media presence or maybe open-source work. It was completely baffling but I'm glad I never encountered another company like them.

nathanvanfleet··on Skimpflation: A reason inflation is worse than the government says it is
I think there is a real thing happening there. Luxury things are going up astronomically. It's just not for the middle class anymore. A bunch of the population just won. They got to upper middle class and it's no big deal to spend a few thousand here and there. $500 meal etc. There's a huge divide and there just won't be home ownership or all sorts of things. It just for the highest bidders now and they somehow have 10x more than you.
nathanvanfleet··on Computer-1 mini-ITX Chassis
I agree with everything you are saying except that pocket operators are actually quite neat. But yeah, everything else is actually really pricey and actually has a lot of reliability problems. You see a lot of people paying that $1200 for the OP-1 and it just breaks and TE doesn't support their product either.
