nathanm412··on Microsoft Loop Preview
It kind of reminds me of what Google Wave promised to be.
nathanm412··on SEC issues more than $17M award to a whistleblower
Or this one https://www.sec.gov/news/press-release/2022-114
nathanm412··on Finland will seek NATO membership immediately
It's not how it benefits Hungary, but what benefits Orban. He's playing the playbook we're all to familiar with lately of antagonizing allies while warming up with Putin. It allows him to solidify his base while attacking the principles of democracy that might threaten his position.
nathanm412··on I became the internet’s most notorious bike thief
Electric screwdrivers with not much more torque than a human hand can apply are pretty common and small. They spin much faster than I can turn a screwdriver and stop before they can strip any screw. With the right gearing and modification, I can see one easily cut through a bike lock.

nathanm412··on Samsung plans $17B chip plant in Taylor, Texas
It's essential to Taiwan's survival for production to physically stay focused in Taiwan. I don't know if the US would be as willing to defend Taiwan if our own recovery wasn't affected by the chip shortage.
nathanm412··on A single laser fired through a keyhole can expose everything inside a room

nathanm412··on The worst volume control UI in the world (2017)
I wonder if it has something to do with your language. I know they've had other random UI issues if your language wasn't set to english. Here's my volume setting for reference: https://i.imgur.com/PwW0SwI.png

It's still frustrating though. I can't just click the volume icon and use the mouse scroller to change the volume. It takes two clicks now.

nathanm412··on How Government Wrecked the Gas Can
It's an incredibly disingenuous article. I have a few of these gas cans and don't have any trouble with them. There absolutely is a vent in these cans. The article even mentions that they're still there, but aren't opened until you activate the top. My cans have a trigger that you pull to pour gas. As soon as you pull it, the gas flows freely. No more trying to invert the nozzle to reassemble the lid to close it anymore.
nathanm412··on Trunk Road Gritter Tracker
Here in Columbus, Ohio, we have a site called the Warrior Watch - https://warriorwatch.columbus.gov/ww It does a great job of showing when my street was last plowed and what it's priority is. We haven't had a lot of use for them this winter though.

nathanm412··on Scooter startup Bird is seeking a $2B valuation
A suburb of Columbus Ohio is starting a review process with Lime Bike. Depending on the outcome of a trial process, they'll announce a bidding process where the winner gets exclusive access to the city.
nathanm412··on Amazon device recorded private conversation, sent it out to random contact
It is. OK Google won't unlock a locked phone unless the voice matches, and you specifically enable the feature that allows it to unlock the screen. Once the screen is unlocked however, only certain functions that access your account will need to match your voice (if you spent the time to get Google to recognize your voice.) Performing web or photo searches wouldn't require you to match the voice if the phone was otherwise unlocked.

Asking someone to silence their phone might just be an attempt to get them to unlock their phone before issuing the offending command.

nathanm412··on The Stuxnet worm may be the most sophisticated software ever written
We're quickly heading toward the age of the first Virtual WMD. The implications can be as wide as your imagination, but possibly worse than existing WMDs.
nathanm412··on Zillow surprises investors by buying up homes
Wouldn't a place like Zillow have first hand knowledge? You can sign in with your facebook account, for example. Linking your account will give them your public profile, friend list and email address.
nathanm412··on Google Chromecast and Google Home Causes Wi-Fi Drops
I have an Onhub with four chromecasts and five google homes and have experienced the issues described. I noticed that sometimes if I wake my galaxy s7, other devices in the room might lose connectivity for a few seconds. I couldn't place why it would happen sometimes but not others, but this makes sense. I wonder if it might also explain why if a media app is casting and goes to sleep, it forgets that it's casting when it wakes up.
nathanm412··on When the DC-8 Went Supersonic (2011)
The biggest issue wouldn't have been designing a power system that could bring a jet to mach speeds. The bragging rights for them were that the plane survived the transition to mach 1.
nathanm412··on Training exercise boosts brain power, Johns Hopkins researchers say
In my experience, how boring an exercise is seems to be inversely related to your aptitude with that exercise. Running started out to be extrememly boring. I would listen to audiobooks while out on a trail. After a few months, I would notice that I'd miss sentences here and there. If I tried harder to concentrate on my otherwise very interesting audiobook, my running pace would suffer considerably. Eventually, I couldn't do books any more and switched to music. After a couple of years, I found the music distracting, and my pace increased when I did away with it. This also seems to be a theme I've noticed while weightlifting in the gym. The more proficient I am with a movement, the more my brain is being engaged.
nathanm412··on A Pre-History of Slashdot
That's exactly how I felt.
nathanm412··on A Pre-History of Slashdot
I think it's been at step 3 for longer than most sites have last. I know I'm part of group 2, but I've seen a somewhat consistent culture since I arrived over five years ago.
nathanm412··on “We will stop updating and distributing the Flash Player at the end of 2020”
When was this? They've been trying to discourage people from using flash for years now.

nathanm412··on Roomba Inventor Joe Jones on His New Weed-Killing Robot
Give it a few decades and the weeds will find a way of corroding robots. In a century, we'll have to develop robots that can handle the acid that plants will be spraying on them.
nathanm412··on Leaked email from United Airlines CEO blames passenger for violent removal
Bumping happens before boarding. The contract doesn't allow for bumping after being seated. They're also required to offer up to $1300 cash if you refuse the $800 voucher.
nathanm412··on A chess position to defeat computers?
His rules seem to require only that the move was legally possible, not necessarily likely. Maybe after moving around the board for a while, the bishops aren't readily able to strike at the pawn.
nathanm412··on Visual Studio 2017 Launch [video]
This announcement wasn't targeted to just you individually. I don't see "Visual Studio 2017 Launch Video for overly sensitive romanovcode" anywhere in the title. Do you not think that the Corporate Vice President of Visual Studio would be a qualified person to be speaking during this event? No one is forcing you to participate in watching this video. The whole industry would do better without people like you. In fact, it is!
nathanm412··on Japanese toilet industry agrees to standardize complex bidet controls
India should be able to use it as much as they want. I would imagine it would be harder to make that case for a former Axis power.
nathanm412··on Do Not Eat, Touch, or Even Inhale the Air Around the Manchineel Tree
After having a bad run-in with poison ivy as a kid, I can't unsee the plant wherever I go. It's practically neon in my mind. It's amazing how the brain works.
nathanm412··on Do Not Eat, Touch, or Even Inhale the Air Around the Manchineel Tree
I didn't realize that was hemlock. We have it growing in our back yard in a bad patch of weeds we need to clear out.
nathanm412··on The bank lent me $2m so I spent it on strippers and cars
He was acquitted because they charged him criminally instead of in civil court. He should have had collections go after him while he deals with wage garnishments, not jail time.
