nathanasmith··on Computer game play reduces intrusive memories of experimental trauma (2015)
I play Half Life 2 to ease depression since I won't tolerate the side effects of SSRI medication. It's the only video game I play and I've beaten it literally hundreds of time. I can fly through the whole thing in about 4 hours on the hardest setting I've played it so much. I don't know why it works and I don't want to even poke at it lest it stop working but when I have an "episode" where everything goes gray I just fire the game up and start waxing head crabs. Pretty soon I'm right as rain.

As an addendum, the only thing I don't like about my M1 Mac is HL2 doesn't work on it other than through Crossover Office and even then it's extremely glitchy. If anybody has suggestions to get it running well I'm all eyes.

You can use Anki in your web browser without storing anything locally. It has some limitations and is not really meant to be your sole use of Anki but you can create and study text based cards.

On my Android tablet I use Kiwi Browser, a fork of Chromium that supports Chrome extensions. Ublock Origin, Tampermonkey, and a few other of my favorites all work reliably.

nathanasmith··on Rethinking the computer ‘desktop’ as a concept
Google Maps on Android is the worst offender I've ever seen with this. Practically every time I open the app I get spammed with some dialog box or extraneous UI elements. The worst part is Google Maps is kind of a "just in time" affair. I only open it when I'm going somewhere and I need it to function right now. Alas.

I haven't viewed the site on a desktop but on the iPad at least you tap on an image and then swipe to see the next ones. Also there's a close button in the top right to get back to the article.

A thought provoking message. Just quoting it for posterity. Carry on.

nathanasmith··on 4chan founder Chris Poole has left Google
>A very simple pattern of 4chan posting culture is to offend others in order to provoke a debate about what you actually want to discuss. It's the 4chan version of clickbait. The /g/ catalog is absolutely filled with people doing this. Want to talk about Linux? Pretend you're a superior Windows user and mock Linux for not having some feature. File picker thumbnails are a common example. This happens all the time and can generate some rather unique discussions.

I do this with investment ideas on /biz/ regularly, particularly in the stock market general thread and have had some very enlightening debates as a result.

This is close to my biggest pet peeve on the internet. Fortunately, the "kill sticky" bookmarklet[0] gets rid of those as well as other fixed elements on the page. Works on iOS too.

nathanasmith··on A deep-dive into the future of subscription gaming
>the cost of building a decent gaming computer has become ridiculous

I don't know, I have a GTX 980ti and an overclocked Sandybridge Core i7 2600k in my gaming computer, both bought many years ago, and I haven't had any problem playing new games. I'm sure there may be some stuff it would struggle with but Doom Eternal, the latest Deus Ex, Far Cry 5, etc. play perfectly well as far as I can tell.

nathanasmith··on Ask HN: Which books made you the most money?
Options as a Strategic Investment by Lawrence G. McMillan introduced me to the wonderful world of selling covered calls on my long term holds as well as many of the ins and outs of options wrangling in general.
nathanasmith··on ‘I get better sleep’: the people who quit social media
Twitter, Facebook, etc. seem a lot more personal to me where it's easy to get wrapped up in the minutia of other peoples' lives. In contrast, HN is a feed of articles with comments on the specific topic and strong moderation to keep it that way. The latter may be "social media" but not like the former.
nathanasmith··on Violentmonkey – An open source userscript manager
I've been using Tampermonkey in Safari 14 on my M1 based MacBook with no problems. All the scripts I use with Violentmonkey in Chrome on my desktop work here. Tampermonkey from the App Store[0] does cost a couple of bucks though.

nathanasmith··on Discord bans r/WallStreetBets server, subreddit went private for a while
/biz/ has been flooded with r/wallstreetbets traffic for days and days now. /smg/ threads hit bump limit in 20 minutes sometimes ever since this GME thing really got going. It's even outdone the usual crypto posting on /biz/ which I didn't ever think would happen.

>The hardest part of gambling is not coming up with the big winning bet -- it's getting whatever counterparty to pay you once you've won.

Isn't that the truth. I know crypto is hated on here but just as an anecdote, I've traded on a lot of exchanges in the last few years and I almost wince whenever I make a really great trade that 5 or 10x's because as sure as the day is long inside of an hour my account will get frozen and I'll have to submit documentation, answer a bunch of questions, or whatever else to get my account unfrozen and access to the funds. It's almost like they're saying thanks for your business and we don't mind you getting lucky but don't get too lucky.

nathanasmith··on Pandemic Villains: Robinhood
Every time I read the Hacker News comments for any article to do with economics or trading I'm painfully reminded of the Gell-Mann amnesia effect[0]. The latest javascript front end framework sure but fates help anybody who takes investing advice from this place. Reminds me of the infamous r/buttcoin subreddit. On the front page there you can see when the sub was created. From then until now while they were busy being permabears bitcoin's price has exploded over 1000x.

nathanasmith··on Ask HN: What device do you use for reading scientific or technical papers?
I use a Samsung Galaxy Tab S5e. Large high resolution AMOLED screen, a reasonably fast processor, thin and light design good for long reading sessions. Sometimes I use an iPad 2017 when the Samsung's on the charger but the older screen on it just isn't as nice in my opinion.

nathanasmith··on Why I’m Leaving Elm
I'm frankly not buying this lazy argument. The assertion that "plenty of people are overly polite because it inflates their ego to be perceived as polite" is bullshit. In it's general form it's no more than a convenient tool to disparage those you don't like. Dislike a person but lack a rational or socially acceptable way to criticize them? Easy, just use this prebaked phrasing to cast any exhibited behavior negatively. Imagine somebody doesn't like happy/serious/polite/flirty/whatever people. Then to them happy/serious/polite/flirty/whatever people are just acting happy/serious/polite/flirty/whatever to be perceived that way as an ego boost. It's an absurdly reductive cynical word game when you need to hate but can't come up with anything substantive. The argument's unprovability short of mind reading and its applicableness to anything (and anything's opposite!) removes any intellectual rigor as it careers completely over the side of "proving" too much. Vacuous rhetorical flourish trotted out in the middle of discussion to target anything the opponent says or does as mere self-aggrandizement. Seductive if one goes for that kind of sophistry however the reality of human motivation does not resemble this arbitrarily contrived model of, to echo the GP, ego inflation. Here's the real reason people seem "overly" polite: a combination of cultural norms, fear, being non-confrontational, and power dynamics. As simple as it is.

I know that some people are willing to go through much mental gymnastics to justify hate and derision while seeing themselves as virtuous but had no idea this mean spirited belief pattern was at all pervasive here, however this discussion has led me to revise that belief. It's sickening but rather than continue to get worked up I'll just log out for another 6 month hiatus like I've done before when this community gets a little too high off its own farts. Hopefully things will be better, folks a little less stir crazy in October. Later.

nathanasmith··on Why I’m Leaving Elm
>I think the idea that most people are nice to some people, and not nice to others is a generally accepted premise.

Nothing I said implied I disagreed with that "premise" and it seems bizarre how what I did say could somehow lead to your non sequitur of an answer. At any rate, what should have been obvious I was taking exception to was the idea that "plenty of people are overly polite because it inflates their ego to be perceived as polite." That comes across as reductive. The same argument could be used to criticize anyone's motivations for practically anything and anything's opposite. So and so does x because it inflates their ego to be perceived as doing x or so and so is overly impolite because it feeds their ego to be perceived as someone with a gruff demeanor. It's too easy so I was looking for some kind of article that at least made a convincing argument for its application in at least this specific context. I'm still waiting.

nathanasmith··on Why I’m Leaving Elm
>Plenty of people are overly polite because it inflates their ego to be perceived as polite.

Can you point me to some article or rigorous paper that would help me take this claim seriously?

Yep, though I am having trouble pulling up a good source and density map, I understand there are pockets of LA County both larger and more dense than San Francisco.

Edit: According to this[0], LA is "the single most densely populated urban area in the United States".
