nate8bit··on Search engines alternatives now that Google isn't Google anymore
Brave.
nate8bit··on DeepSeek makes the V4 Pro price discount permanent
The biggest problem we face in the west is thinking our institutions are somehow different. Be critical of the product all you want, but don't pretend the exact same thing isn't happening here.
nate8bit··on The last six months in LLMs in five minutes
The tooling has become so good though - the eco-system around the LLM. The models have become really good, yes - but it's definitely slowed in my opinion. The tooling is what really has become great - "harness" is probably the best word. When folk like Elon/Schmidt/Theil/etc. talk about singularities and industrial revolutions - it sounds extremely out of touch - or actually protective of the massive capex they've potentially sunk.

EDIT: Schmidt's booed commencement speech was probably one of the most out-of-touch speeches (outside of a tech interview) I've heard.

nate8bit··on AI subscriptions are a ticking time bomb for enterprise
The entire problem with "AI" is that it's easy to do without. The AI companies know it, the users know it - even the most pro AI agent manager knows it. Thought experiment: remove AI from the world right now, all of it - what do you have? Business as usual. This article doesn't do enough to underscore that - dreaded be the day I need to get an actual engineer to review a PR, right?
nate8bit··on The US is winning the AI race where it matters most: commercialization
Why is this phrased so antagonistically? For clicks? This is like saying the US is winning the cloud race - it's not a race. The author is completely missing the forest from the trees - this benefits everybody. LLM's aren't going to wake up and be sentient - the race to real AGI is where is has been 10 years ago.
nate8bit··on Software Developers Say AI Is Rotting Their Brains
It's pretty interesting because if you look at the net value over the last 2 to 3 years, you'd expect to see a flurry of high value/high complexity/high velocity software being delivered. But we haven't. We've seen outages almost normalized now and the only new thing being built are more AI integrations - and I have to ask: for whom? To me, there's a pretty big gap between the delivery and claim of AI, and the question is - do you stay an IC or do you become an agent manager (in which case you will lose your technical edge for sure).
nate8bit··on GitHub is sinking
I would not be surprised if AI commits are the culprit. There is no way any service would cope with a constant stream of unfettered commits by sleepless always-on agents. Ironically, this same strategy seems to be what GH/MS (and other big companies) are evangelizing - and therefore dying by their own hand (in a way).
nate8bit··on Talking to strangers at the gym
I think picking up people at the bar is easier than making friends at the gym - what you want is to join a crossfit gym, or something that has a stronger community culture to it. Not the gym.
nate8bit··on Nuclear receptor 4A1 linked to health effects of coffee: study
I love coffee, so this is a nice read. Couple years ago I switched to french press, fresh beans (grind on demand) & no milk or sugar - okay, a dash of full cream milk sometimes. Has to be strong - you can't drink weak coffee like that!
nate8bit··on Shadcn/UI: A set of beautifully designed components that you can customize
We initially looked into using shadcn/radix - but it's quite bloated. Maybe even warranted with all the a11y accommodations - even the official W3C ARIA examples are not straightforward (most of the time).
nate8bit··on Shadcn/UI: A set of beautifully designed components that you can customize
Yea, was wondering this too.
nate8bit··on If Apple makes an iPad Neo, it's all over
> Apple hardware isn't exceptional, it's maybe slightly above average

Is this a serious statement? If Apple's hardware is maybe slightly above average - what's above it? It's an easy company to hate on - but you don't have any other platform integrated as well as Apple's right now IMO. Unless you maybe count Huawei.

Edit: I think I may be referring more to the holistic picture. But still curious what hardware you think is better.

nate8bit··on If Apple makes an iPad Neo, it's all over
For all of the Apple hate recently (with glass + MacOS bugs) - it's still great to be able to invest in high quality hardware. I made the switch to Mac, oh about 12 yrs ago, and sometimes forget how spoilt we are with really tight hardware + software integration.
nate8bit··on Adding a team was the wrong strategic decision
Yea, it's a very odd way of referring to people you work with.
nate8bit··on Adding a team was the wrong strategic decision
Thanks!
nate8bit··on Adding a team was the wrong strategic decision
Am I missing something - what's with the "tribe" terminology?
nate8bit··on An AI agent deleted our production database. The agent's confession is below
Giving an agent this level of access to infra is doing a disservice to people who've trusted this guy with their business.
nate8bit··on [dead]
Let it go. This is clearly a vibe-coded site, the fonts, layout, all look anthroposized. If Mythos was really so good, then they would not share it with anyone.
nate8bit··on Thoughts and feelings around Claude Design
Some good points, but as a whole - I'm not sure if I agree. Sketch lost to Figma because of it's design tooling & multiplayer. Physical products still get designed before being constructed - I don't see that going away. If anything, I think Figma should stop trying to play both sides of the field and decide what it wants to be.
nate8bit··on Anonymous request-token comparisons from Opus 4.6 and Opus 4.7
Any recommendations on good open ones? What are you using primarily?
nate8bit··on Anonymous request-token comparisons from Opus 4.6 and Opus 4.7
Makes me think the model could actually not even be smarter necessarily, just more token dependent.
nate8bit··on Claude Design
I think it's because it's non-deterministic too. You can't iteratively improve design the same way you can code.
nate8bit··on Claude Design
Unless you want something that looks like it's designed by Anthropic, this is still pretty shit. Amazingly "AI" hasn't replaced the very first target on their radar - design.
nate8bit··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (April 2026)
Working on Fronteer, a project management app that (1) integrates messaging more cohesively with tasks and (2) better supports external collaborators - think agency clients, customers, etc.

Some of the biggest pain points we’ve seen is chat being separate from a solid task manager, and the pain of collaborating with people outside your own org.

We’re currently in private beta and hope to open it up to the general public soon!

nate8bit··on AI Will Be Met with Violence, and Nothing Good Will Come of It
A lot of the magic of LLMs, I think, has been tarnished by these CEOs and other FAANG companies. It might have been a far more interesting world if they didn't bring "AI" or "AGI" into the conversation in such a politicized way.
nate8bit··on Taste in the age of AI and LLMs
I would... actually maybe agree with this. I'm not certain it can be taught!
nate8bit··on Taste in the age of AI and LLMs
> A practical loop for training taste

Taste is cheap. Taste (or a rudimentary version of it at least) is something you start with at the beginning of your career. Taste is the thing that tells you "this is fucking cool", or "I don't know why but this just looks right". LLM's are not going to replicate that because it's not a human and taste isn't something you can make. Now - MAKING something that "looks right" is hard, and because LLM's are churning out the middle - the middle is moving somewhere else. Just like rich people during the summer.

nate8bit··on Dropping Cloudflare for Bunny.net
We use them for a couple of things - very happy. I think probably the best reason (other than service robustness): support. CloudFlare is great until it's not, and you aren't paying $$$ for enterprise support. This is probably one of the most underrated reasons to switch to any lesser known (but still rock solid) infra services. UpCloud too - great support!
nate8bit··on The Last Quiet Thing
Funny story, but I didn't realise I much I didn't want an Apple Watch, until I got one. I exercise daily and most days I just want it to shut up.
nate8bit··on Show HN: I built a tiny LLM to demystify how language models work
This is really great! I've been wanting to do something similar for a while.
