nasredin··on Reading privileged memory with a side-channel
A "rambling nutjob" that has been proven correct time and time and time again.

We need more people with RMS-type views in Google, Facebook, etc.

nasredin··on Open source modular synth software lets you create 70s & 80s electronic music
>Once you’ve created an account and installed it, you can start adding dozens of plug-ins, including various synthesizers, gates, reverbs, compressors, sequencers, keyboards, etc.

Sigh.

So Google people and the Germans were working on the same thing without knowing of each other until Intel connected them?
nasredin··on Vulnerability of Speculative Processors to Cache Timing Side-Channel Mechanism
Project Zero AKA Google is probably a better choice than "Tailored Access" guys at the NSA or their Russian or Chinese equivalents.
nasredin··on The Case for the Subway
One of the things TFA mentions is installing modern switches. Of all the solutions it's seems the least difficult and disruptive.

It seems like a problem of will and not technology.

Maybe NYC subway needs some huge disruptive event to motivate people to do something. (FBI I'm not talking about that, please don't visit me!)

nasredin··on The Case for the Subway
>Nobody knew what those people were doing, if they were doing anything

I just can't help but smile and remember the scene from The Sopranos of some wiseguys seating in lawn chairs at the construction site eating pastrami sandwiches... but in a tunnel this time!

nasredin··on AI-assisted fake porn are being used by people on Reddit for self-completion

nasredin··on Guys, unless you are really hot you are just wasting your time on Tinder
>It was determined that the bottom 80% of men (in terms of attractiveness) are competing for the bottom 22% of women and the top 78% of women are competing for the top 20% of men. The Gini coefficient for the Tinder economy based on “like” percentages was calculated to be 0.58. This means that the Tinder economy has more inequality than 95.1% of all the world’s national economies.

95%?

So there's still a chance! Men are not going to give up that easily.

No citation needed.

Also his sample size of 27 and self-reporting makes this not very rigorous(?).

nasredin··on Call of Duty gaming community points to ‘swatting’ in Wichita police shooting
My guess:

Google the hopefully unique username.

Find the first and or last name (Facebook).

Find the state and or city.

If you have the name and the city you can find the address.

My friend's 11 year old is already in THE database.

If you search for his first and last name and city you get his parent's address and home phone number.

Welcome to the Brave New World!

There's an age factor here.

From personal experiences games with older gamers tend to have less... idiots.

They are still there, it's just they are banished from well admined servers quickly.

Games from Tripwire Interactive are a good example (Red Orchestra, Killing Floor).

---

COD is bad, simply because it is too big and "young". But again if you play on well-admined servers it is not a problem.

nasredin··on LAPD arrests man on suspicion of making deadly swatting call to Wichita police
>1) Anyone who gets shot by cops must have done something to warrant being shot.

Done something like being poor, minority or both?

I've recently read a nice piece (Vox IIRC) on authoritarian personalities and I think this is the new norm.

A decade ago I would have just written that type of comment as trolling, but now it's a different world.

People genuinely hold this cryptofascist beliefs.

nasredin··on Many major websites are taking silent anti-ad-blocking measures
>Lack of independent impression counting

AKA

Advertising companies are afraid website owners (and everybody else who can do it) are going to steal from them.

nasredin··on An update on Better Ads (Chrome native ad-blocking)
It's like requesting a chocolate bar, paying for the delivery, and the store sends you a truck full of garbage with that chocolate bar at the bottom.

Sorry I'm all out of car-themed analogies.

nasredin··on An update on Better Ads (Chrome native ad-blocking)
I had so much respect for Google about a decade ago.

Now they are on the same level as Microsoft. The Orweillian attempts at redefining language is... not surprising. This is beyond regular corporate-speak.

Their search results are full of spam.

They take hostage Gmail accounts.

It seems that everything "cool" they do... has a sinister, ulterior motive.

I don't know if all the good they have done outweighs the bad.

nasredin··on California's hidden homeless: workers living in cars due to property prices
It's in the gathering-signatures stage.

There's a quiet a lot of, ehm, "interesting" ballot initiatives here.

Legalized psilocybin anyone?

As they saying goes, democracy is perfect but it has one fatal flaw... the people.

nasredin··on Tricks to make yourself effortlessly charming
I meant the OP as she should have been smart enough (spoke 3 ME languages IIRC) to realize she should stop talking.

IF she did something illegal, she must have thought a day like that may come and had prepared herself.

It's interesting that people who should know better keep falling for these techniques, e.g. General Flynn.

nasredin··on New York's vanishing shops and storefronts: 'It's not Amazon, it's rent'
Pfft. If you were a TRUE American, you would of course use the one true, correct and proper measuring unit.

The Library of Congress.

nasredin··on VLC media player 3.0.0 'WeatherWax' Release Candidate 3
1. You really don't need MadVR. The default install of MPC HC or BE should be fine.

2. VLC has this resizing behavior that I do not understand how people tolerate. It just feels clumsy compared to MPC which feels more native. VLC is a good backup if or when MPC fails.

What I am saying is MPC is better for watching porn than VLC.

nasredin··on Tricks to make yourself effortlessly charming
If the FBI shows up at your door, and act very nicely, very friendly... but they have a search warrant...

It's not a speeding ticket, you are not gonna out talk them out of searching your house... so you should... not talk?!

nasredin··on Computer latency: 1977-2017
This is the same guy who did the keyboard latency test:

https://danluu.com/keyboard-latency/

thay was on the frontpage of HN.

IIRC there was some critism there. He didn't include the mechanical switch type and it's actuation point and IIRC the text was very unprofessional (capitalization errors).

nasredin··on Where to hide your nuclear missile submarine?
Annexation of Crimea in 2014.

Support for the only active war on Europe.

Destabilization of EU, NATO, US elections.

---

Take a look at Russian TV and polls. The Russian government (TV propaganda) and people (Putin has 80+ approval) do not want to be friends. (Unless you are Syria, Iran or North Korea).

nasredin··on Where to hide your nuclear missile submarine?
The only openly hostile country with SLBMs is Russia.

So Russia is probably the best choice.

IIRC both have about 60 subs and Russia is back at their post-1991 strength.

See the recent WaPo article about them mapping undersea cables.

nasredin··on The Only McLaren F1 Technician in North America
>The reason we need those specific Compaq laptops is that they run a bespoke CA card which is installed into them," explains a McLaren spokesperson to Jalopnik. "The CA card is an interface between the laptop software (which is DOS-based) and the car." If you've never heard of a CA card, then Jalopnik commenter Mike Herbst helpfully explains it's a Conditional Access card. Modern PCs use smart cards or USB keys with special access codes to access sensitive systems, and the CA card was used as custom hardware as part of an integrated system for security and copy protection.

nasredin··on I got locked out of my Google account for a month
...And the IP you used to sign up... and the city for that IP in the geolocation database at that specific date... and the exact User Agent string... and the time zones... and...

Or maybe they should stop being idiots and allow people with strong passwords to... just use passwords to authenticate.

Maybe some type of "I know what I am doing, kindly fuck off Google" option.

nasredin··on I got locked out of my Google account for a month
They always seem to want phone numbers, which in a lot of countries are easily attributable to real people.

One more time the "techbros" of Silicon Valey don't realize their actions are hurting people.
