narrowtux··on Arizona Uber crash driver was 'watching TV'
> You first have to recognize that the system is failing or about to fail

For that to work, I'd like that cars that have features like this show you what they're seeing. Tesla does this a bit by showing all the cars it has detected in the dashboard. But it should go further and other car brands should do the same.

Without that, you're right, you can not be sure if the car is going to react to something on its own.

narrowtux··on Apple Releases iOS 11.4 with Messages in iCloud and AirPlay 2
That's possible because your computer sends airplay streams to all airport expresses at the same time.

However, you can't really do that with a phone, since it eats battery and needs a stable wifi connection.

AirPlay 2 solves that by allowing the phone to buffer minutes of audio to one speaker, which then distributes that buffer to the rest of the speakers.

narrowtux··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (March 2018)
ZENNER IoT Solutions | Senior Full-Stack Developer | Hamburg, Germany | Onsite, Full-time | https://zenner-iot.com/page/karriere/ (German)

We're building a technology-agnostic IoT Platform with focus on LPWAN and SmartCity. Features include device management, metrics, communication history, rule engine and parsers.

Our software is built with Elixir in the backend and JavaScript (VueJS) in the frontend and makes use of the Phoenix Framework, PostgreSQL and RabbitMQ. We have a modern CI setup built on Docker and Gitlab.

If you're fluent in either VueJS or Elixir (preferably both), we'd love to talk.

narrowtux··on Xltrail – An open-source Git command line extension for Excel workbook files
Yes. I got so fed up with bullshit like this that I made a blocklist for my ad blocker just to keep sane while browsing.

The latest entry blocks the smooth scroll on the site of this post. They've gotten smarter now and include this in bundles.

narrowtux··on Email is your electronic memory
Yeah I'm talking more about how every other mail provider has their own rules and you have to set it all up. Like one requires your mail domain to me an AAAA record (where I've used a CNAME) and other things.
narrowtux··on Email is your electronic memory
Hosting your own email server is maddening. There are so many new things on top for validating that your email server is legit and does not send spam. On top of that, some email providers will derivate from the "standard" way of doing things right now and proceed to block you for mundane reasons. The only way you find out is one of your customers frantically telling you that their emails are not received by the other party.

It will take you a few months to fix all those problems and even then it could be that some email provider decides to put new requirements in place.

narrowtux··on London City Airport Shut as WW2 Bomb Found in Thames
In another video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NRccXqD5KsY) some of the people involved were interviewed and they all say that it went exactly as planned, because a detonation with a radius of 300 meters was planned.
narrowtux··on Apple's Middle Age
Also that line is a little inaccurate, since there's one more (that I know of) smart speaker system that offers apple music: Sonos.
narrowtux··on Daily Facebook users drops for the first time in US
You can disable these notifications by clicking the 3 dots next to them and then selecting "Hide notifications of this kind" or something like that. Granted they'll come up with new kinds of the same thing that will spam you again, but it works for me right now.
narrowtux··on Ask HN: What are the end to end encrypted desktop messengers?
WhatsApp's "native" "client" is abusing your phone as a server. No-go IMHO
narrowtux··on No more MVC
If I understand correctly, the main difference is that the controller no longer calls the view (templating system or what-have-you) to output the result, but rather outputs the model and the responder figures out how to render that data.

I find this useful because it allows you to reuse a controller (action). In most applications you'll have at least 2 views on the system: UI and API. Sometimes, they're the same, but very often they're not.

You can disable the App Store in iOS as well, if I were a parent, I would choose a few good games but disable the App Store for my kid's devices.

That just doesn't work because of business decisions on google's end.

Replace kits cost $25 from iFixit and others. It's not as easy as just plopping a new one in but together with the excellent guide at iFixit, it works pretty well. Upgraded the battery in my 6 last week.
narrowtux··on Magic Leap One
I think it's a marketing term that differentiates AR apps that live on your smartphone screen from AR apps that you use through goggles.
narrowtux··on Elixir multiple processes: Basics
As I said, using a message queue like Rabbit MQ is basically the same thing. Granted you don't get a UI that is as fancy, but the promise that a task that is enqueued will be executed eventually can be given.
narrowtux··on Elixir multiple processes: Basics
Of course you could make such a system in Elixir, and I'd always recommend doing things within the erlang VM (beam) instead of figuring out how to deploy another service (like install sidekiq with all its dependencies).

However, processes in Erlang/Elixir are used ubiquitously. Most of the time, they run forever like some sort of service and are restarted when they crash. Sometimes, you won't care about the result.

That's the reason why features such as tracking success/failure in a persistent data store is not a core feature. You could easily add those features to your processes though, the necessary API is already there.

The alternative is to use message queues that are durable. Only ack the message when you successfully handled it. If your application crashes before the task was completed, the task will be redelivered the next time the application starts.

narrowtux··on Google Is Blocking YouTube on Amazon's Echo Show and Fire TV
Same thing with the Apple TV. And they apparently said that Apple wouldn't let their app into the store which is BS, since they already have an app for Prime Video for iOS.
narrowtux··on A primer on Elixir Stream
In case you're wondering how to merge streams, the functions `zip` and `concat` are 2 examples.

narrowtux··on The iPhone X UX is a nightmare
Reminds me of the Office 2007 design woes. Now that everyone's used to it, nobody complains any more.
narrowtux··on Try quickly typing 1+ 2 + 3 into the iOS 11 Calculator
> cross platform

Only mobile, the web version is shitty because it hosts a web server on your phone which is unreliable. And even with that you can only access the web version from one computer and it does not work well on tablets.

narrowtux··on Linux on Samsung Galaxy smartphones
These things take time. Remember that blue screen when they announced USB plug and play support in Windows 98?
narrowtux··on Documenting the Web together
Yet here I am and still have to fight flexbox bugs in IE 11 they were too lazy to fix for 2 years and then closed the ticket because IE 11 was legacy at that point.
narrowtux··on The impossible dream of USB-C
no
narrowtux··on The impossible dream of USB-C
I think 2 reasons:

1. They already have a lot of accessories for lightning and they would kinda lose that sweet 30 % MFi for 3rd party lightning accessories

2. A lot of people who don't know why USB C is great will probably bitch about how Apple is changing the port on the iPhone _again_, like they did when they switched from 30 pin to lightning. Could be a PR nightmare

narrowtux··on Changing Lanes
not really ;)
narrowtux··on Show HN: No Coin – A browser extension to block coin miners
I don't know. If you run those on a laptop you pretty much kill battery life, same thing with phones.
