naoru··on Mona Sans and Hubot Sans
It's missing Iosevka which I use daily since its first release. Maybe it's because it has so many variations.
naoru··on Over 16k people still use a Pebble smartwatch
Count me two. Me and my esposa still use our Pebble Times.

Once in a blue moon I buy a hot new smart watch, but nothing lasted more than a week before being resold.

naoru··on A conflict with a manager ended with me being disallowed to work at Spotify
Sheesh. I had my fair share of bad interactions with management but in the end my contract termination landed me a much better job. And even much better afterwards.

Huge corps with a lot of middlemen tend to become authoritarian, competent people who kickstarted the whole affair are being replaced with yes men^Wpersons all the time because at larger company sizes loyalty is much more preferable than hard skills (I'm not implying that I was competent, that's for others to decide, but I wasn't only one who got the pointy end of the boot though).

I deeply sympathise with the guy, but there's time to enjoy and there's time to move on. Holding grudges against some kronenbergian bureaucratic machine ain't good for your mental health.

naoru··on USB-C hubs and my slow descent into madness (2021)
Yeah no, that'll dissolve those ABS cases in no time.
naoru··on Directory Opus is a complete replacement for Explorer

naoru··on PCB Business Card
Mitxela made a PCB business card with a working stylophone in it: https://mitxela.com/projects/stylocard
naoru··on Ask HN: Best cars without too much digitalization?
Got a 2016 Kia Rio QB hatchback with a 1.6L G4FC engine this spring as my first car. It had a bit more than 30k km on it, very slightly dinged (I already had bonked it twice though).

Reliable as a brick. Drives like one too. But boy is it stupidly simple — no bluetooth even, chucked in a USB receiver and called it a day. No touchscreens, no fancy driver assist, no cameras, no nothing. Just an AC and motorized windows.

Paid around $10k for it. Worth every rouble.

Korean cars are very popular here in Moscow. Basically every taxi is either Kia or Hyundai, Toyotas are less common. Outside of major cities Renault (Dacia) and Ladas are prevalent because they're even cheaper.

Want a dumb car? Come to Russia. We have some.

naoru··on Usbimager – A non-electron based alternative to Balena Etcher
Etcher was a nice simple application, but now it's an attention grabbing adware monster. I don't need any promotions when I'm burning my SD cards, thank you very much. I'm surprised that so many people here chose to defend it.
naoru··on Mighty MK-52: The Spaceworthy Soviet-era Calculator
115 soviet rubles weren't equivalent to 2021 $5, that's a gross miscalculation. it's more like $450. some sources claim that soviet ruble is equivalent to around 220-240 2018 Russian rubles, and in 2021 rubles it's even more.
naoru··on PID Controller for controlling the number of servers in a data-center
Do you work in a datacenter by any chance?
naoru··on Researchers fear a scenario in which smart speakers feed sleepers subliminal ads
Seems like it was a subliminal ad for Futurama then.
naoru··on Tune Your PID Controller
Needs integration with Betaflight/INAV logs.

I'd happily pay for that. Tuning PIDs is tedious and takes away from flying.

naoru··on Google Kills Android Things, Its IoT OS, in January
Wow, TIL that Google had an IoT OS.
naoru··on System76 – Pangolin
That's not very precise of you.
naoru··on Awfice – A collection of tiny office suite apps
That's quite a clickbait title. Contenteditable is not new by any means and also is a compatibility mess.
naoru··on Loss of smell could be a 'highly reliable indicator' of Covid-19, research says
Same. It was just like a cold but a bit longer than usual, temperatures never exceeded 37.5.

Fatigue continued for two something weeks after the infection cleared though. My productivity wasn't remotely at it's best.

naoru··on Apple Fitness+
Fitter, happier, more productive. Not drinking too much. Regular exercise at gym, 3 times a week.

Sleeping well. No bad dreams. Less chance of illness.

naoru··on I like big fonts and I cannot lie
I'm quite prone to prolonged intermittent migraines caused by eye strain. Bumping font size from 14 to 16 for a week is sometimes the only thing that helps.

But there's another side to this — I can't use my laptop anymore because even 15" is a bit small for everything I usually keep on my 1440p ultrawide display.

Being born with shitty eyesight sucks. Deteriorating eyesight before 30 super sucks.

naoru··on Tell HN: Toilet paper, hand sanitizer, and now web cams
Really?

I've got 500/500 MBit/s at home. 10 years ago I had about 30, but even that is more than sufficient to stream high quality video.

And this is not a "first-world" country even.

naoru··on Facebook and Microsoft Partner on Remote Development
I've just set up remote development VM on my personal server and it's super seamless. Love this stuff, crazy fast. It's scary that I, a person who expressed my dislike with Microsoft in the past, got hooked on VSCode + Typescript.

But.

There is a possibility that in a corporate environment this tool could be more of a hurdle. Imagine that you don't have control over your VM. No root, no sudo, everything is monitored and scrutinized.

Sounds scary.

I'd rather have a bare metal machine with something like Proxmox just for my team's needs.

naoru··on GoodbyeDPI – Passive Deep Packet Inspection Blocker / Circumvention Utility
Just installed it a couple days ago. I'm surprised that it still works in Russia.
naoru··on India bans e-cigarettes, citing youth health concerns
basic mech setup is a high drain battery connected to a coil with a wick through a high current switch. no rocket science here.
naoru··on .su
My email hosts on @desude.su domain :)

That's a private Google Apps deploy with about 5 users.

naoru··on Neil Young’s Lonely Quest to Save Music From Low Quality Streaming
I have Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless with aptX HD support and the sound is marvelous. No compression artifacts at all.

AptX HD implementation on Pixel 2 XL, on the other side, is subpar. I sometimes get nasty clicks on music with high dynamic range and there's no way to avoid them other than to set output codec to anything but aptX HD, which tremendously affects the quality.

naoru··on A movie changed one man's vision (2012)
Personal anecdote: I was born with astigmatism, hypermetropia with over 3 diopters difference between eyes, a slight esotropia, which was partially corrected by training, and have developed amblyopia as the result of all that.

Naturally, I didn't even know about stereo vision, everything was flat and that didn't bother me.

But when I was about 20 years old, my friend showed me Virtual Boy. After looking into the headset I immediately sensed the depth and was blown away with it.

Even after I took off the headset, depth perception didn't go away ever since. It only became much stronger when I started wearing contact lenses.

Sorry for possible grammar mistakes, I haven't yet experienced anything like Virtual Boy but for English, which is not my first language.

naoru··on Cat Colors
Russian IPs are also blocked. Oh well, I'm getting used to it.

But I don't understand why a cat magazine would block access from certain countries.

naoru··on Show HN: Node-android – Run Node.js on Android
I used an old Android phone with Linux Deploy to run Node with MongoDB around 3 years ago. Now Termux allows to do basically the same.
naoru··on SurfaceOne – an app-controlled trackless camera dolly
No, it's a pigeon.
naoru··on E-waste recycler loses appeal on computer restore disks, must serve prison term
Controversial opinion: mr. Lundgren could tamper with disc content and ship any kind of malware with the OS to intercept sensible data. I'd never trust that kind of 'OEM' CD.
naoru··on Google and LG creates VR AMOLED 120 Hz at 5500 x 3000
Everyone says that a powerful GPU is needed to drive this thing, but I don't think that's a must. Careful art direction based on current hardware limitations can produce nice-looking virtual worlds — not photorealistic, but still immersive and fun. Nintendo pulls this thing consistently.
