nanospider··on AutoDesk Releases An Electronics Simulator Called 123D Circuits
Yes, you can use something like AWR or ADS. Although they cost megabucks.

nanospider··on Bose founder, Amar Bose, has died at 83
Interesting that in the spirit of the usual startup discussions here on Hacker News, no one has mentioned that this is/was a single founder company. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bose_Corporation

Kudos to Dr. Bose.

nanospider··on RIM CEO: We want to be the number three platform on the market
Unfortunate the way it was said. Jobs said something similar but it sounds so different:

"Apple's market share is bigger than BMW's or Mercedes's or Porsche's in the automotive market. What's wrong with being BMW or Mercedes?"

Where the BMW/Mercedes could have been RIM's analogy to something in the enterprise world.

nanospider··on The Well Dressed Coder
indochino is crap. Speaking from experience. I've ordered from them online and visited their traveling tailor as well. Crap fabric, crap fitting, crap tailoring.

Guys please get yourself fitted by a professional. Dudes in Canada might want to visit Harry Rosen.

nanospider··on New Dropbox Pro plans
I'm pretty happy with Skydrive. 25GB for free.
nanospider··on FB down 8% at opening
This is unfortunate. Yes the company maximized their IPO take. But at the end of the day the ones who got screwed were the retail investors who bought into the media hype. This will hurt tech IPOs in general.
nanospider··on Startups Are Hard. So Work More, Cry Less, And Quit All The Whining
The quality of posts that make it to #1 on ycombinator lately leave me unmotivated to check the site as frequently as I used to. As a result I work more, cry less and quit whining.
nanospider··on Dropbox Said No To “Nine-Digit” Acquisition Offer From Steve Jobs
Woah... 5GB! I'm so there.
nanospider··on All-Star Lineup Invests in MakerBot
This is awesome!
nanospider··on Silence: Because I talked so rarely, people took the time to listen to me
On a per sample basis it is very difficult to distinguish between signal and noise. So your lack of definition as to what 'per unit time' means leaves me very confused.
nanospider··on Silence: Because I talked so rarely, people took the time to listen to me
It's actually 66.67% and 33.33%.
nanospider··on Competition Doesn't Matter. Look at Dropbox.
"I spend more than that on coffee."

LOL. Every web service is pitched to me at "less than the price of a cup of coffee a day"

Here are a few - 1) LinkedIn Business account 2) Emusic subscription 3) Adobe PDF writer 4) Freshbooks and the list goes on...

nanospider··on Competition Doesn't Matter. Look at Dropbox.
I should explain further. I started out with Dropbox and am almost at the limit. I don't have disposable income (startup founder). So I started looking for alternatives - that's when I discovered Skydrive.

PS. Have you tried Zumodrive - it's almost exactly like Dropbox.

nanospider··on Competition Doesn't Matter. Look at Dropbox.
I just started using Skydrive. 25GB of space for free. Competition does matter.
nanospider··on The PhD Problem: "Talk of a ‘higher education bubble’ may not be idle chatter”
This is a really good point. The importance of good written and oral communication skills is often downplayed but likely one of the most important in the workplace.
nanospider··on A letter to my students
Looks like there's a Ycombinator startup idea in here somewhere!
nanospider··on Ask HN: Do you meditate?
Yes. 20+ years now.

<1hr.everyday.

Totally worth it.

nanospider··on VCs And Super Angels: The War For The Entrepreneur
"But if big companies aren’t being built because of this small thinking, we’ll all suffer sooner or later. "

This assumes that SV has only web and software startups. Certain kinds of companies (biotech, telecom, etc.) do need VC, and these companies are built to IPO. That won't change.

nanospider··on Just Do It: Move to Silicon Valley
Yes, if you want to do a web 2.0 startup, then the valley is the place to be. No doubt!

Although I then think of Flickr, Plenty of Fish, Club Penguin, etc. and realize that this is not necessarily true.

How many VC-backed companies actually do well enough for the founders to get rich? Not that many - you're better off bootstrapping and then flipping the co. for a $ amount that is in the few million. And I think the Valley is the worst place to bootstrap due to the high cost of living.

And don't get me started on the high cost of getting health insurance. You're better off in Toronto.

nanospider··on Not disruptive, and proud of it
Money changes everything; People, relationships, principles, slogans, etc. to name a few.
nanospider··on Viigo Joins RIM
When I read this first I thought Viggo http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001557/ was joining RIM and then I.....
nanospider··on The Age Old Question: Can A Non-Technical Founder Run A Startup?
These guys can't. They're over 40 and we all know that unless you're 20-something you cannot do anything startup-related.
