nanidin··on Bringing Silicon Valley to the Midwest
I don't see how two people producing the same output deserve different salaries based on where they live - why should geographic location dictate my salary relative to my peers?
nanidin··on Show HN: A Color Palette Generator I Built For My Senior Thesis
Take a look at Munsell for Designers[0] - it purports to solve the UI palette problem.

nanidin··on Show HN: A Color Palette Generator I Built For My Senior Thesis
Is this the same as Munsell for Designers[0]?

nanidin··on Hook-up Truck: A modern dating solution for safe sexual adventuring
> Hook-up Truck™ is a registered trademark, in case you hadn't figured that out yet.

I'm having my doubts about this statement purely because they're not using the ® symbol that actually means registered trademark. However, searching the trademark database actually does reveal that it is registered[0].

nanidin··on Show HN: Untrusted, a JavaScript adventure game you play by modifying its source
Well, the title says you play the game by modifying the game's source. Turns out you don't modify the game's source, you modify specific snippets of code that are provided on the page.

Last weekend I hacked around in the source of various online games, I anticipated this to be a similar experience but was disappointed to find that we weren't supposed to actually change the game's source.

> "If you can read this, you are cheating! D:"

Loaded the site, popped open the Chrome Dev Tools, and was thoroughly disappointed.

nanidin··on Ketamine 'exciting' depression therapy
> Actually, it's called "science". Science isn't about descriptions, it's about explanations. If we knew why ketamine worked, we would have finally crossed the threshold of science.

But you said that if we knew why it worked, it would have become science. You also said that it's about explanations, not about descriptions.

General relativity may describe gravity, but it doesn't explain it. According to your previous post, this excludes gravity from science. I was just pointing out the flaw in your reasoning.

Consider this a final response - I see you will keep any argument going for the sake of arguing throughout this post. It's clear you have some sort of agenda or preconceived notion to defend, and I'll leave you to that.

nanidin··on Do physicists really believe in true randomness?
> If, on the other hand, you try to predict something like the moment that a radioactive atom will radioact, then you’ll find yourself at the corner of Shit Creek and No

I love it!

nanidin··on Ketamine 'exciting' depression therapy
So... Uhhh... Why does gravity work? I know we can describe it, but is it considered science yet?
nanidin··on IRS Says Bitcoin Is Property
Still not clear on what the situation is on stocks that are denominated in bitcoins, and that pay out dividends in bitcoins, such as ASICMINER.

Is it possible for the dividends to be treated as qualified dividends?

nanidin··on Pending Comments
It sounds like if your comment is stuck in pending for 24 hours, it will just be removed altogether.
nanidin··on Pending Comments
My issue with pending comments requiring endorsements is that I have been here for several years and I only have 247 karma. I browse regularly but only tend to comment when I have something good to add. I don't try to game the system, and I don't try to comment immediately on new posts. I'll probably never hit 1000 karma, and now I'm even more disincentived to post since the chances of someone actually seeing what I post will now be even lower.
nanidin··on NSFW Jobs
Maybe I should have quoted the site. They list the benefits as 2 weeks of vacation AND 12 days of PTO "to be used however you want" AND 8 paid holidays.

So what's the difference here between PTO and vacation? Can you get an effective 4 week vacation out of it?

nanidin··on NSFW Jobs
What's the difference between PTO and vacation?
nanidin··on What if you didn't need money or attention?
We sort of have this system already in place - it's called part time work, and it's generally reserved for jobs that don't offer benefits like paid vacation time or health insurance.

If I am willing to work 3/5 days a week for 3/5 of the pay, do I also only get 3/5 of the health care coverage and 3/5 of the vacation time of my 5/5 peers?

nanidin··on Sony announces Project Morpheus, a virtual reality headset coming to PS4
No thanks, I'll wait for Oculus to release something that is guaranteed to work on my PC and not get locked into a Sony product - especially not after the rootkit debacle, and retroactively disabling linux on the PS3.
nanidin··on Recruitment Process for a Google Site Reliability Engineer
One of my valuable skills according to a previous employer was my "google fu" - or my ability to condense any problem into something searchable and come out with a working solution.

This covered everything from design patterns to failing SSD's to static init order problems in C++ to arm assembly instructions...

Sadly every interview I've been in usually involves being a human compiler and key/value store for algorithms rather than being a human problem solver.

nanidin··on F.lux updated
That's ok - I usually get up around 10 or 11. By then, it's all peachy
nanidin··on F.lux updated
I got a bit more creative, and now f.lux thinks I live near the equator, a few time zones west of where I actually do.
nanidin··on LSD, Reconsidered for Therapy
Yes, it's definitely a conspiracy. Never forget the man is out to get us!

nanidin··on Ask HN: Kicked out by co-founders – what are my options?
You could just let the idea develop, and if it turns out successful, pull a Winklevoss and reap the benefits without doing any more actual work on the project...
nanidin··on Show HN: I built an HTML 5 Guitar Tuner
He's using (or at least loading) the DPS.js library: https://github.com/corbanbrook/dsp.js/
nanidin··on Show HN: I built an HTML 5 Guitar Tuner
Underneath, it uses DSP.js also, so I'd imagine it's pretty similar. I am able to get autocorrelation & FFT frequency results out & graph them at about 50hz without any optimization on my rather old laptop in Chrome.
nanidin··on Show HN: I built an HTML 5 Guitar Tuner
I used a library I found on github for a similar project - here's their demo page: http://deibelman.github.io/dart-mic/demo.html

For my project, I was charting the dominant frequency for fun.

nanidin··on Questions People Ask When I Tell Them I Own an Airplane
When my neighbor retired from the airforce, he moved on to flying planes for FedEx. He is paid VERY well for that.
nanidin··on Questions People Ask When I Tell Them I Own an Airplane
Rule 99732: When you can't admit you were wrong, argue on technicalities!
nanidin··on What happens when a host cancels with Airbnb?
That's beside the point - the point being that you asserted that the "Real Bed" qualifier was referring to not getting a couch in an apartment, like couch surfing. Judging from your post history, you will argue on any point possible, and won't cede a thing. Consider this my last reply.
nanidin··on What happens when a host cancels with Airbnb?
As I see it, the customer didn't get what they paid for. Instead of getting back a partial refund for what they didn't receive (4 beds vs 3 beds) they were refunded the fees that AirBnB charged - which according to AirBnB was because the host had already been paid out the rest of the money. Clearly AirBnB is capable of refunding this guy, regardless (or at least I'd hope they have more than a few hundred cash on hand for incidents like this...)

Ok, so customer didn't get what they paid for. Company takes a hardline stance & refuses to work with customer beyond telling them to buy an air mattress with the refunded fees. Where else does the customer have to turn at this point? The chargeback.

The whole point of putting it on the table and giving a 1 week deadline is exactly that it will hurt the business. You know it and they know it. Now suddenly they're not the only one with bargaining power in the relationship, so they might actually offer a partial refund of the actual rental based on the difference between what was offered & what was received. Or they might stick to their guns & fight the chargeback if they think they were correct in their initial assessment.

The chargeback is really like a turbo button - it boosts you up real quick past the grunt level CS people to actual decision makers who can and will do what they can to avoid the chargeback and maintain a positive relationship with you.
