nanidin··on Did any processor implement an integer square root instruction?
Neon is SIMD so I would presume these instructions let you vectorize those calculations and do them in parallel on a lot of data more efficiently than if you broke it down into simpler operations and did them one by one.
nanidin··on Looking to build a personalized AI for myself. Any resources?
The various langchain libraries out there make it easy for developers, and they include examples.
nanidin··on A deep dive into email deliverability in 2024
I ran my own mail server for more than a decade. Same IP the entire time, never sent spam (for personal use only.) Finally threw in the hat last year and moved to a paid service - it was a pain to tell every person I sent mail to to check their spam box and mark me as not spam or add me to contacts. Beyond that, gmail smtp servers kept getting onto spam blocklists, so I wasn't receiving mail from gmail at times.

What you want to look into is retrieval augmented generation (RAG). Basically you store a bunch of facts as text in a vector database, then you query the vector DB for things to stuff into the prompt that you send to the LLM.

What you write to the LLM might be "give me a conversation topic I might have with a member of the community", and your vector DB will have a bunch of things like "Dumbledore is a member of the community. Dumbledore likes to talk about magic". In theory the vector DB search will turn that up, and then it gets stuffed into the prompt so what actually goes to the LLM is something more like "You are a helpful AI assistant. Dumbledore is a member of the community. Dumbledore likes to talk about magic. give me a conversation topic I might have with a member of the community".

The heavy lifting will then be collecting and storing all of the data that goes into the vector DB.

nanidin··on Building Node.js applications without dependencies
Node was released in 2009 :)
nanidin··on Hard-to-swallow truths they won't tell you about software engineer job
Have you tried changing companies? That sounds like a very toxic environment.
nanidin··on Why banks are suddenly closing down customer accounts
The compliance officer was following up with me I think because it looked like I was doing structured transactions, back when crypto exchange max ACH was $500/day. I did some explanation of crypto and he was like “so it’s for investment?” and that was it.
nanidin··on Raspberry Pi 5: available now
I’m not sure what’s in the pihole and I’m afraid to pull it out but probably Sandisk class 10 in that one.

In the BirdNET-pi I used whatever came in the CanaKit which I’m not even sure if it was branded. I gave that to my parents and my dad replaced it and hasn’t had problems since then.

nanidin··on Why banks are suddenly closing down customer accounts
Ahh, good point I was running my own VPN with all traffic coming through Dallas for financial stuff.
nanidin··on Why banks are suddenly closing down customer accounts
I spent a year traveling in SE Asia circa 2012 and I didn’t have any problems with my bank account. n=1 and all that, and I didn’t have income coming from outside of the US, but I had countless ATM withdrawals and credit card spends.

The only time a compliance officer has been in touch with me was when I was moving money to crypto exchanges.

nanidin··on Raspberry Pi 5: available now
Interesting, my experience with pihole has been basically set it and forget it for several years now.

With BirdNET-pi, I have had a few hiccups due to the SD cards getting worn out from constant writing.

nanidin··on What every developer should know about GPU computing
I’m guessing we’re talking about the pioneers here.
nanidin··on Small business owners say they're pressured to hire off-duty cops for security
In my state municipalities are required to spend 25% of their budget on police. So effectively 20% of the tax base of the municipality is being used to police Walmart. Walmart isn’t the only business in town, there are lots of businesses, convenience stores, restaurants, you name it - they share what’s left after Walmart, and it doesn’t seem fair.
nanidin··on Small business owners say they're pressured to hire off-duty cops for security
There is a Walmart in my metro area that is responsible for like 80% of all police calls within their municipality. This is the same Walmart that leeches off society in other ways like paying sub-living wages so that employees need to rely on social safety nets to survive. I'm not sure if they have to hire private security, but this is a prime example of a business that should be securing itself or changing location.
nanidin··on About half of Bandcamp employees have been laid off
Bandcamp always struck me as a place for producers to sell to DJ’s since you can get high bitrate MP3’s and lossless files.

A pattern I’ve seen is that artists will put a new release on Bandcamp a week before it’s available on streaming services. This lets them pull in more revenue by selling the album for $10 to enthusiasts before it’s released to the masses.

nanidin··on Adam? ... is there a reason your laptop is in the fridge? (2006)
One of the fixes for the red ring of death on Xbox 360 was to wrap it in a towel so it would get hot enough to reflow bad solder joints.
nanidin··on We are retroactively dropping the iPhone’s repairability score
I had my phone grabbed out of my hand at a concert in the US. But yeah pick pocketing is much more common in Europe, had people try it twice there. Once in Milan and once in Barcelona.

The big target here now is music festivals where teams will rove looking for vulnerable/inattentive people and get into their pockets or bags and bolt.

nanidin··on Musk Wanted to Spy on Drivers to Defend Tesla from Lawsuits
I find the time varies, and that the amount of attentiveness required is much lower than that for FSD. FSD will ding you very quickly if you have a device in your hand, especially compared to plain autopilot.

My car came with an internal camera that didn’t have IR lights, which made FSD completely unusable at night time (they put in a new one under warranty).

I only subscribe FSD every few months for long trips, but I have a 1400 mile road trip planned this weekend and I will be using plain autopilot.

nanidin··on Musk Wanted to Spy on Drivers to Defend Tesla from Lawsuits
FSD does use the internal camera to enforce eyes on the road hands on the wheel. It’s actually worse for road-trips on the highway than plain autopilot for this reason, aside from the fact that FSD will automatically pass and change lanes.
nanidin··on Update on KDP Title Creation Limits
You'd think... but in a growing b2b company, the CRM is where sales get prevented under a certain threshold. heh.
nanidin··on Update on KDP Title Creation Limits
If I don't get where I want to be with the front door customer service within a decent amount of time, I have always had good success contacting jeff@amazon.com. Their executive support team gets back quickly via email or phone and they really seem to care.
nanidin··on When MFA isn't MFA, or how we got phished
Credit card fraud departments are generally good about this.
nanidin··on Why we didn’t get a malaria vaccine sooner
Yes, there is an oral vaccine for typhoid fever that is more effective than the injected vaccine, but it can’t be taken by immunocompromised people because it contains live bacteria.
nanidin··on North Korean campaign targeting security researchers
This would cause immediate conflict with China. Imagine China showing up to liberate Mexico from the drug cartels.
nanidin··on The boy who stole Half-Life 2 (2011)
In around 10th grade a friend and I got the leak just as it came out and then used it to make the characters lips sync to our voices for a chemistry class project. The engine worked, the lips matching word tech was awesome, and people couldn’t believe what we pulled off.

Imagine that intro scene in HL2 where you walk through a trap door Pepsi vending machine and behind it there’s a lab - and instead of talking about HL2 stuff, Alyx and company talk about sampling and testing local natural water sources.

nanidin··on MacWhisper: Transcribe audio files on your Mac
This captures the exact type of problem I have when using Siri for my shopping list.
nanidin··on Ask HN: Why did Microsoft, Meta, and PayPal update their ToS today?
I think that one of the benefits of dvcs is that it's relatively easy to move to another provider or self host, and that everyone that cloned has a copy.
nanidin··on Ask HN: Why did Microsoft, Meta, and PayPal update their ToS today?
I was more interested if some law or regulation recently came into effect
nanidin··on Ask HN: Why did Microsoft, Meta, and PayPal update their ToS today?
USA
nanidin··on Ask HN: Why did Microsoft, Meta, and PayPal update their ToS today?
This is a great idea, but I'm also interested in the why behind those changes.
