The total mass of Earth’s atmosphere is about 5.5 quadrillion tons.

My top colour is: 0FADED

Amusingly iOS inverts this to something very similar to HN orange.

You should never trust a politician, especially one that claims to be on/in the left.

These two statements are equally as vacuous.

I struggle to believe there isn’t a significant fraction of EU citizens who are frustrated with the EU’s laws.

At the very least to the extent that the whole setup limits national sovereignty.

Your comment comes across as though you expect us to believe EU citizens are a homogenous whole, who happen to align with your perspective on this matter.

Having said that, I appreciate the wide point you’re making.

Indeed.

Maybe you’re right. Maybe we should panic.

Maybe we should instil panic and fear in the junior school kids. Yeah, that’ll help!

Maybe we should be teaching the kids that white people are evil and rich white people just want to destroy the environment.

If private enterprise want to fund marketing research, fine.

It’s the social science academics living off the public purse I take issue with.

As an outsider, it’s not clear to me who you are referring to as tribalist regressors here.

Would you mind clarifying?

Liminal dreaming. Ain’t never heard that before, sounds like pseudoscience woo-woo to me.

nandomrumber··on New method turns ocean water into drinking water, without waste
I’m not even going to night clicking on a title that is clearly a load of bullshit.

I suppose you could water down the ocean water it’ll was drinkable, or like just add half a teaspoon of sea water to a cup or drinking water.

Buy all work done eventually decades in to waste heat.

Probably not you, but on this very forum there are plenty who will argue that LLMs / AI are entirely deterministic and that given enough time, a chisel, and sufficient clay tablets, any AI output can be calculated by hand.

I don’t know enough about anything to determine which opinion is correct.

Is AI output not just matrix multiplication and a random seed?

nandomrumber··on Squillions: How money laundering won
> With a dwindling number of legitimate cash users

Services for laundering cash are going to see a huge uptick in turnover.

You put the cash in the local slot machine, the slot machine owner then purchases legitimate services from your wife / cousin / other family member’s business.

Or you rent a hole in the wall location massage business that that maybe legitimately employs one or two people but on the books they manage to see back to back clients for 20 hours a day.

Another good one is hair dresser / barber, they often take cash.

Weren’t those anti ballistic missile missiles all nuclear armed themselves?

And doesn’t the parent article to the Sprint article make it clear that they we didn’t deploy them because fall out shelters combined with building more nukes was deemed more cost effective at saving lives.

nandomrumber··on When Dawkins met Claude – Could this AI be conscious?
What explains the emergent abilities of generative pre-trained transformers at massive-scale? Abilities that the smaller GTP’s don’t possess.

Simple programs can give rise to very complex behaviour. Conway’s game of live is Turing Complete and has four rules.

Conway’s Game of Live can simulate a Turing machine, can therefore implant a GTP.

Does that mean Conway’s Game of Life is conscious? I don’t think so.

Does it rule out Conway’s Game of life from implementing a system that has consciousness as an emergent ability?

I’m not convinced I know the answer.

nandomrumber··on When Dawkins met Claude – Could this AI be conscious?
Trivially simple programs (rule sets) can give rise wildly complex systems.

Fractals, Game of Live, the emergent abilities of highly-scaled generative pre-trained transformers.

Coincidences appears to be an emergent property of (relatively) simple matter.

70kg of rocks will struggle to do anything that might look like consciousness, but when a handful of minerals and three buckets of water get together they can do the weirdest things, like wondering why there is anything at all rather than nothing.
