namelost··on Mastering Chess and Shogi by Self-Play with General Reinforcement Learning
I'm sorry, I thought we were discussing the paper.
namelost··on Mastering Chess and Shogi by Self-Play with General Reinforcement Learning
They didn't demonstrate that AlphaGo Zero can beat Stockfish in a fair contest: i.e. take the amount of money they spent on Stockfish's CPU and RAM, buy a commodity GPU for AlphaGo and then see.
namelost··on Ask HN: What is the “other side” of the Net Neutrality argument?
The other side is that net neutrality is just a bandage around the more fundamental problem: that there is not much competition between ISPs in the USA.

The seemingly endless debate around "net neutrality" arguably benefits ISPs, who have little to gain by being "non-neutral" but MUCH to gain by maintaining their local fiefdoms.

namelost··on How to get enough protein without meat
OK let's ignore protein for a second. You're saying that if you eat the same number of calories, but as fat instead of carbs, your body will store less of it. i.e. that the human body is much more efficient at extracting energy from carbohydrates than it is from dietary fat, i.e. more of the energy from dietary fat is wasted. Macronutrient choice cannot affect the amount of work that your body does, only what percentage of the calories are wasted (inefficiency).

On the face of it this makes no sense because fat is such a good energy source that it's what our bodies use to store energy, so why would our bodies have problems extracting energy from dietary fat?

namelost··on Why Go and Rust Are Not Competitors (2015)
This actually makes a lot of sense. From the outside, it's hard to see why anyone uses Go. Using Go feels like going back in time 20+ years.

However if someone is coming from PHP, Go must look positively modern. Considering the millions of PHP programmers out there, Go can keep on growing for a long time.

namelost··on UK parliament to get binding vote on final Brexit deal
It was a government policy, not a law. It is basically meaningless.
namelost··on Bitcoin Cash Skyrockets, Bitcoin Price Drops As Civil War Continues
The value of a dollar only changes if some people decide they want a jstanleytoken more than they want a dollar (i.e they start to buy jstanleytokens).

Otherwise the value of a jstanleytoken will remain at 0 and the value of a dollar will be unaffected.

namelost··on France’s Prometheus reusable engine becomes ESA project, gets funding boost
I agree with what you're saying and I'd also like to add that SpaceX could have failed. Based on the evidence available in 2002 there was no reason to think that reusable rockets were necessarily going to work.

Musk is a gambler, and this time he won, but other times he has failed. The reason he can gamble is because SpaceX is funded by private money.

namelost··on Driverless shuttle in Las Vegas gets in fender bender within an hour
Practically it needs to be perfect, because whoever makes the self-driving car will be liable every time it kills someone. And there's going to be millions of these things.
namelost··on .IO domain name reliability issues and how we’re working around them
Sounds like the UK has effectively given away the atoll to the US. The US is not going to pack up their very important torture base just because the UK asks them to. Denying the islanders permission to return is just a face-saving move to avoid admitting that the UK no longer controls the territory.
namelost··on A Clash of Cultures
The world is full of fakes and liars, especially where there is money to be made.

Some comments in this thread amount to encouraging that we should blindly accept that a person is who they say they are because they are the "right kind of person".

namelost··on Shut up and calculate: an extreme mathematical universe
But the contradiction is in the mathematical model not reality. Even a totally random universe follows some kind of distribution, which can then be modelled (which is exactly what QM is).
namelost··on How Apple sidestepped a 2013 crackdown on its Irish tax practices
For the US to start taxing Apple's foreign income abroad is not like taxing an American living in Ireland (and even that is crazy). It's like if the US started taxing an Irish person in Ireland[1].

However obvious it is that EU Apple is a sock puppet of US Apple, directly imposing taxes on foreign companies operating in foreign countries would be met with retaliation. It is not a smart nor a profitable trade policy.

namelost··on US Court Grants ISPs and Search Engine Blockade of Sci-Hub
The US is a corrupt country, the laws are written figuratively or sometimes literally by corporations with the intent on profiting from them.

Given that, it is unsurprising that the laws do not represent the interests of the common person.

namelost··on The freakishly strong base
This article isn't what I was expecting, but to satisfy my curiosity, the strongest known base is (according to Wikipedia) Ortho-diethynylbenzene dianion.

namelost··on Bitcoin Surges Past $7,000 to Extend Record Rally
The forked currencies are just the same as altcoins, you can't sell 1 Bitcoin Cash for $7000. The fact that people are willing to accept money for them doesn't change the value of one Bitcoin.
namelost··on Should I use Xcode 9.0.1 given the bad reviews in the App Store
I don't mean that. Xcode is itself a Mac app, but Apple hasn't cared about the technologies for building Mac apps for a long time.

The UI framework for building Mac apps (AppKit) was designed in the 90s. In ~2007 it was revamped for the original iPhone as UIKit, but crucially Apple never backported their modernization to the Mac. And even UIKit is starting to look outdated compared to modern innovations such as React Native.

So I don't envy the Xcode team, they are working with an old codebase and targeting an abandoned UI framework.

I'm sure if Apple could swallow its corporate pride and just fork VSCode, they could work miracles.

namelost··on Learning a hierarchy
FWIW authors on mathematics papers are always listed in alphabetical order.
namelost··on Should I use Xcode 9.0.1 given the bad reviews in the App Store
One problem is that Xcode is written using AppKit, which was a state of the art technology 25 years ago and hasn't changed much since. Apple stopped caring about Mac development a long time ago and Xcode is the highest profile casualty.

Contrast with VSCode which is built with modern technologies. It has a much faster release pace, and is more stable and more responsive (despite being an Electron app!)

namelost··on China temporarily shuts down thousands of factories in pollution crackdown
How do these people get visas?
namelost··on What Would Happen If There Were No Number 6?
> All that being said, the modulo world that the article mentions does't make sense to me. If 6 doesn't exist, how could you have modulo 6?

It's finite so just write out the addition and multiplication tables: http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=Z%2F6Z

namelost··on Google's latest iPhone rival off to a rocky start
We have gone from one standard interface, to now three interfaces (headphone jack, USB-C and lightning), and one of them is proprietary.

We move from a world where you can buy any set of headphones, and use them with any device, to a world where... nothing is compatible with anything else. Either you use a permanently connected dongle, or you buy multiple sets of headphones.

The future is stupid and I don't want to live in it.

namelost··on Boom has orders for 76 of its future supersonic passenger jets
Several countries have already committed to ban cars with internal combustion engines in the next 10-20 years.

London is introducing a new "T-charge" today whereby owners of older and more polluting vehicles have to pay an extra fee to enter central London.

I suspect that 'a jet that generates double the pollution so that rich people can get to their destination faster' is dead on arrival.

namelost··on Boom has orders for 76 of its future supersonic passenger jets
Concorde was a British-French aircaft, so it was allowed to fly over the UK. If it had been American, it would have been banned instantly. It was horrifically noisy.
namelost··on Supreme Court Errors Aren’t Hard to Find
Words have meanings. Growing wheat for private consumption on one's own land is not "commerce" whatever the honourable idiots of the US Supreme Court think.
namelost··on DevDocs API Documentation
I think you or the mods should remove your comments because they are potentially defamatory. There is indeed no evidence that the Dash author himself was responsible, he says it was a family member.
namelost··on AlphaGo Zero: Learning from scratch
The conventional wisdom for Chess engines is that aggressive pruning doesn't work well. Chess is much more tactical than Go, selective algorithms tend to lead to some crucial tactic being missed, and the greater the search depth, the more likely that is.

Modern Chess engines are designed to brute-force the search tree as efficiently as possible. I will go out on a limb here and say they would wipe the floor with AlphaGo, because AlphaGo's hardware would be more of a liability than an asset against a CPU.

namelost··on Zig Programming Language 0.1.1: First beta release
Lack of operator overloading limits the audience of a language to non-numerical applications (e.g. no gamedev).
namelost··on Why Are Millennials Wary of Freedom?
> - Freedom and democracy are different things, if some people think democracy isn't that important, it does not mean they do not value freedom.

e.g. Switzerland's infamous vote to ban minarets[1]. A lot of European countries seem to have a problem with religious freedom, despite being very democratic. Contrast with the undemocratic Singapore where people of different religions coexist relatively harmoniously.

namelost··on Fiat is Effective: fiat for the crypto crowd [pdf]
There are many countries which do not have the ability to print money, either because they use another country's currency or their currency is pegged. This usually comes about in order to ease trading (e.g. Hong Kong), because the existing currency was very weak, or because that country is too small to manage its own currency.
