I like my society like I like my programming languages: classless and stateless.

Mullvad is Swedish for "mole". Mull is a word for soil, and "vad" seems to come from "vada", wade. So translated it would be "soilwade".

To me, it sounds like just another word.

According to what source? Passmark says otherwise[1]. The fastest Intel CPUs have both a higher single thread and multi thread score in that test.

nameequalsmain··on Dust from car brakes more harmful than exhaust, study finds
Don't most EVs use regenerative braking though? That should offset their weight a fair bit I imagine.

I'm a man but washing and using conditioner will take a lot longer than 2 minutes. I have very long hair though.
nameequalsmain··on Ask HN: What do you use to backup your VMs?
LVM snapshots + rsnapshot, saved on btrfs disks on each server, then btrbk[1] for pulling backups to remote storage.

Even a racing driver can't beat ABS on asphalt in a controlled setting.[1] On dirt roads or ice the story might be different.

Not within a capitalist system, no. There are other systems though.

nameequalsmain··on GRML – a Linux distro for system administrators
I've used Finnix[1] for recovery tasks in the past. Having a good Linux distro on a USB stick makes me feel ready for any (most often self inflicted) computer emergency. It's the sysadmin equivalent of a Swiss army knife.

nameequalsmain··on Swisscom to discontinue MMS service
Yup, the parent comment is incorrect. SMS longer than 160 characters (in GSM 03.38 encoding) are split into multiple parts, each a maximum of 153 characters long, 7 characters are used to glue the parts together.

> Globalism and mass immigration is the destructor of culture.

In what way? It might change the cultural landscape but that happens all the time, even the most nationalistic state does not have the exact same culture it did 100 years ago. Old culture will go away to make place for a new one, or rather, culture is always evolving.

> You can forget about that for a while and play the game of the inevitable failure of multiculturalism, but it will always fail, you will always destroy society, and from the ashes, a cohesive, homogeneous people will reemerge to build back from the ashes of your stupidity as has always been done

Do you have any examples?

nameequalsmain··on Show HN: Lofi.cafe
I'd go for "listening now" or "currently listening". I also assumed the "room" was the what I see now is called "station".

Counting the listeners in a station instead of visitors site-wide would be kinda neat though, and "room" works well then I think.

edit: or maybe "in the cafe" for site-wide visitors? That should be clear and has the same feeling as "room".

nameequalsmain··on Religious fervour is migrating into politics
How did you arrive at that conclusion? With the decline of organized religion, could one not suggest that religiosity is very much something people can be without? Or are you referring to already religious people being unsatisfied religiously?

I'm in a very secular country. Non-religious people are... non-religious. I don't believe there is anything that "replaces" religion in most people's lives. If you're not religious, you don't necessarily have metaphysical needs, and I think most people here don't.

Regarding religious people: they meet with eachother in church and other constellations as usual. Nothing is keeping people from practicing their religion, but they can't assume most people will empathize with their views, which is true for many different standpoints in life, not just religion.

(I did not read the article as I was paywalled, I might have missed the context of your comment)

nameequalsmain··on On the Experience of Being Poor-Ish, for People Who Aren't
I don't think the point is to belittle their accomplishments, but rather a realistic take on poverty. A lot of people try really hard, and still cannot get out of poverty.

This is something we as a society need to deal with, and not disregard a systematic problem with anecdotal success stories and saying "You can too!"

nameequalsmain··on Spotify patent would suggest songs based on users' emotions
I named a playlist "metal", it started recommending metal songs without me having added anything yet.
nameequalsmain··on Just Enough Piracy Can Be a Good Thing
I am with pitaj here, intellectual property is fundamentally wrong, but this is a good example of something that I'm not sure would work under no copyright. "Pay what you want" is one way, though I don't have any statistics on if that collects enough money. Another could be selling signed copies or otherwise making some copies exclusive in a way that copying them nullifies. Pay what you want + signed copies + patreon style donations might be enough?

I don't have a good answer to this. I would therefore suggest decreasing the duration of copyright to somewhere around 5-10 years to give the copyright holder time to sell the work with exclusive rights, after which the work enters public domain (like copyright was initially intended to work).
